How to watch the NHL 2025-2026 season without cable: U.S. guide

The 2025-26 U.S. NHL season required a mix of ESPN+, ABC, HBO Max, live-TV bundles, and team-specific regional broadcasters because blackouts and local rights prevented one universal cable-free option.

How to watch the NHL 2025-2026 season without cable in the United States depended on the game’s rights: ESPN/ESPN+ and ABC carried national games, HBO Max carried select TNT games, ESPN+ handled out-of-market games, and a team’s regional broadcaster handled local games; blackouts and ZIP-code availability still applied. The season ended in April 2026.

Date and scope: As of August 12, 2026, the 2025-26 season was over. The 2025-26 season began October 7, 2025, and the 2026 Stanley Cup Final was scheduled to begin June 2, 2026, with every Final game available on ABC in the United States. This guide describes the completed 2025-26 U.S. distribution arrangement and should not be treated as a 2026-27 schedule guide.

Key takeaways

  • The U.S. cable-free setup for the 2025-26 NHL season combined ESPN/ESPN+, ABC, TNT through HBO Max or a live-TV provider, and the viewer’s team-specific regional broadcaster.
  • According to the NHL’s August 27, 2025 national television announcement, 100 games were scheduled across the ESPN, ESPN+, Hulu, and ABC group, while TNT carried a separate national package.
  • According to the NHL’s 2025-26 schedule announcement, ESPN+ carried more than 1,050 out-of-market games through NHL Power Play, but local blackouts still applied.
  • ESPN+ did not provide every NHL game because some games carried on NHL Network were excluded and local-market games could be blacked out.
  • An antenna could receive local over-the-air ABC games where reception conditions permitted, but an antenna could not receive ESPN or TNT.

What did watching the NHL 2025-2026 season without cable require?

Watching the NHL 2025-2026 season without cable required matching each game to its broadcast category instead of looking for one universal subscription. National games used ESPN, ESPN+, ABC, Hulu, or TNT; out-of-market regular-season games generally used ESPN+; and local games used the regional broadcaster serving the viewer’s ZIP code.

Viewing need 2025-26 cable-free route Main limitation
National ESPN games Qualifying ESPN access through the ESPN app, an ESPN plan, or a live-TV streaming bundle The correct ESPN plan or provider authentication was required; ESPN+ alone did not mean access to every ESPN network game.
National ABC games Local ABC station through an antenna or live-TV service, with an authenticated ESPN app route also available Local affiliate availability and antenna reception varied by address.
National TNT games HBO Max, Watch TNT, or a qualifying live-TV bundle HBO Max described the entitlement as select live sports and select NHL games, not every NHL game.
Out-of-market regular-season games ESPN+ through NHL Power Play Local blackouts applied, and certain NHL Network games were not available through ESPN+.
Local team games The team’s regional sports broadcaster or local streaming provider Rights depended on the viewer’s ZIP code, team, and game; a national ESPN+ subscription did not replace the local rights holder.
2026 Stanley Cup Final ABC and the ESPN app pathway in the United States The 2025-26 Final arrangement was season-specific and did not guarantee the rights arrangement for 2026-27 or later.

The NHL’s official U.S. viewing guide listed ESPN/ESPN+, ABC, TNT/HBO Max, and team-specific regional broadcasters as the relevant viewing paths. The guide was a rights map, not a promise that one service carried every game.

How were national, local, and out-of-market games different?

National games were available across a broad U.S. audience, local games were assigned to a team’s regional rights territory, and out-of-market games were games shown outside the viewer’s local territory. The same team could therefore appear on ESPN, TNT, ABC, ESPN+, or a regional network during one season.

National ESPN, ABC, and Hulu games

The NHL announced 100 games across the ESPN, ESPN+, Hulu, and ABC group for the 2025-26 season. That figure comes from the NHL’s August 27, 2025 national television announcement. A viewer needed the applicable ESPN access, a qualifying live-TV bundle, a local ABC signal, or the appropriate authenticated app route depending on the specific game.

ESPN’s direct-to-consumer plan structure changed during this period. ESPN Select included ESPN+ content, including NHL out-of-market programming, while ESPN Unlimited included the broader ESPN network portfolio as well as ESPN+ content, according to ESPN’s plan information. Plan names, inclusions, and prices are volatile, so readers using this article for a future season should verify the current ESPN plan before subscribing.

Hulu also appeared in the 2025-26 national schedule group. Hulu’s inclusion in the schedule did not turn Hulu into an all-games NHL service; the specific game listing and the viewer’s subscription or authentication determined access.

TNT games and HBO Max

TNT carried a separate national package during the 2025-26 regular season, including the 2026 Winter Classic and a substantial Tuesday and Wednesday schedule. The NHL listed Watch TNT and HBO Max as streaming routes for TNT-produced games in its official viewing information.

HBO Max was useful for selected TNT games, but HBO Max was not a complete NHL replacement. HBO Max’s official live-sports help page stated that Standard and Premium plans included select live sports, including NHL games, and that the service carried select 2026 regular-season and playoff games. HBO Max plan names and sports entitlements can change, so the current plan details must be checked before purchase.

Out-of-market games on ESPN+

ESPN+ was the principal U.S. cable-free route for out-of-market regular-season games during 2025-26. According to the NHL’s July 16, 2025 regular-season schedule announcement, NHL Power Play on ESPN+ included more than 1,050 out-of-market games during the season. The official ESPN NHL page described the service and its NHL streaming access.

ESPN+ did not carry every NHL game. ESPN+ local blackouts applied when the viewer was inside the protected territory of the team or game, and the NHL’s official guide warned that certain games shown on NHL Network were not available through ESPN+. ESPN+ was therefore an out-of-market solution, not a guaranteed all-games package.

Which service was needed if you followed a local NHL team?

A viewer following a hometown team generally needed that team’s regional broadcaster or local streaming service in addition to any national-service subscription. The correct provider depended on the viewer’s ZIP code and the team, not simply on whether the viewer had ESPN+.

Examples from the NHL’s 2025-26 local-broadcast information included NESN for Boston, MSG Buffalo for Buffalo, FanDuel Sports Network South for Carolina, Chicago Sports Network for Chicago, Altitude Sports for Colorado, FanDuel Sports Network Ohio for Columbus, and Victory+ for Dallas. The NHL’s broadcast-area and blackout lookup was the appropriate place to check a particular ZIP code rather than relying on a nationwide channel list.

Team example Listed 2025-26 local broadcaster What an out-of-market viewer generally used
Boston Bruins NESN ESPN+ for eligible out-of-market games
Buffalo Sabres MSG Buffalo ESPN+ for eligible out-of-market games
Carolina Hurricanes FanDuel Sports Network South ESPN+ for eligible out-of-market games
Chicago Blackhawks Chicago Sports Network for listed local games ESPN+ for eligible out-of-market games, subject to national-game exceptions
Colorado Avalanche Altitude Sports ESPN+ for eligible out-of-market games
Columbus Blue Jackets FanDuel Sports Network Ohio ESPN+ for eligible out-of-market games
Dallas Stars Victory+ ESPN+ for eligible out-of-market games

The Chicago example shows why a national subscription alone was insufficient. The Blackhawks’ 2025-26 local schedule listed Chicago Sports Network for many in-market games, while out-of-market games were generally listed on ESPN+ and national exceptions appeared on ESPN, TNT, or ABC.

What was the simplest cable-free setup for each type of NHL viewer?

The simplest setup depended on whether the viewer prioritized a local team, national games, or a wide selection of out-of-market games.

If you mainly wanted… Practical 2025-26 setup What to verify first
Your local team Local regional broadcaster or team streaming service, plus ESPN access for national games Enter your ZIP code in the NHL broadcast-area lookup and check each game’s listing.
Out-of-market games ESPN+ with NHL Power Play Confirm that your location is outside the team’s local territory and check for NHL Network exclusions.
ESPN, TNT, and ABC nationally televised games A qualifying live-TV streaming service, or separate ESPN, HBO Max, and ABC options Check the provider’s current channel lineup, local ABC affiliate, plan tier, and regional availability.
ABC games without another subscription A local ABC broadcast signal received through an indoor HDTV antenna Check signal strength, terrain, transmitter distance, antenna type, and line of sight.
The broadest practical coverage A live-TV bundle for available national and local channels, supplemented by ESPN+ where appropriate No single combination guaranteed every game because blackouts and NHL Network exclusions remained.

How could an antenna help with ABC NHL games?

An antenna could replace a paid TV service for local ABC broadcasts when the viewer’s home could receive the local ABC affiliate. An indoor HDTV antenna was a reasonable starting point for a viewer who wanted ABC games over the air, including the 2025-26 Stanley Cup Final, but antenna performance depended on the address and surrounding conditions.

An antenna could not receive ESPN, ESPN+, TNT, HBO Max, or regional sports networks. Antenna reception also could not be guaranteed by a manufacturer’s advertised range alone. AntennaWeb’s guidance recommends checking the viewer’s address, transmitter distance, terrain, antenna type, and line of sight before choosing an antenna. A streaming device may be useful when an older television cannot run the ESPN, HBO Max, or live-TV apps, but a device does not provide NHL rights or remove a blackout.

How should you check NHL blackouts before subscribing?

You should check the NHL broadcast area by ZIP code before paying for ESPN+, a regional service, or a live-TV bundle because blackout rules can make an otherwise valid subscription unable to show a particular game.

  1. Identify the team you want to watch and the ZIP code where you will watch.
  2. Use the NHL’s official broadcast-area and blackout lookup to identify the local rights holder.
  3. Check the game’s schedule listing for national designations such as ESPN, ABC, TNT, or NHL Network.
  4. Use ESPN+ for eligible out-of-market games, but do not assume ESPN+ will show a local game.
  5. Confirm the current plan tier and local channel availability directly with the streaming provider before starting a subscription.

A blackout is a rights restriction, not a technical defect. Changing a streaming device, HDMI cable, or antenna cannot legitimately turn a locally restricted ESPN+ game into an available out-of-market game.

Were live-TV streaming bundles a good cable replacement?

A live-TV streaming service was the most convenient single-subscription approach for viewers who wanted ESPN, TNT, and local ABC together, but channel availability varied by ZIP code, plan tier, and provider.

YouTube TV promoted NHL access through ABC, ESPN, and TNT, while Sling’s channel lineup listed ESPN and TNT. The official YouTube TV NHL page, Sling channel lineup, and YouTube TV location guidance should be treated as provider-specific examples rather than universal guarantees.

A bundle could simplify national viewing, but a bundle did not automatically include every regional sports network or eliminate local blackouts. A viewer following a local team needed to verify that the bundle carried that team’s regional broadcaster in the viewer’s ZIP code. A viewer focused on out-of-market games still needed to consider ESPN+ because a live-TV bundle was not the same product as NHL Power Play.

Could you use NHL.TV instead in the United States?

NHL.TV on DAZN was not the U.S. out-of-market product for the 2025-26 season. The NHL’s U.S. guide directed U.S. viewers toward ESPN+ and NHL Center Ice, while the NHL.TV information page applied to listed international territories. International viewers therefore needed to check their country-specific NHL distribution rather than copy the U.S. setup.

What happened to the 2025-26 season and its streaming rights?

The 2025-26 regular season began on October 7, 2025 and concluded in April 2026, so this article is a season-specific reference rather than a live schedule. The 2026 Stanley Cup Final was scheduled to begin on June 2, 2026, with every Final game available on ABC in the United States.

The 2025-26 rights arrangement should not automatically be used as a 2026-27 guide. The NHL published a separate 2026-27 schedule announcement dated July 7, 2026; viewers planning for a later season should verify the newer national schedule, local broadcaster, plan entitlement, and blackout rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did ESPN+ carry every NHL game?

No. ESPN+ carried NHL Power Play out-of-market games, but local blackouts applied and certain NHL Network games were excluded. Viewers inside a team’s local territory generally needed the team’s regional broadcaster.

Can an antenna receive ESPN or TNT NHL games?

No. An antenna could receive a local over-the-air ABC affiliate where reception conditions permitted, but an antenna could not receive ESPN, ESPN+, TNT, HBO Max, or regional sports networks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use NHL.TV to watch the NHL in the United States?

Not for the U.S. 2025-26 season. NHL.TV on DAZN applied to listed international territories; U.S. viewers were directed to ESPN+ and NHL Center Ice for the relevant out-of-market options.

Was there one subscription that included every NHL game without cable?

Usually not. A complete U.S. setup could require ESPN access for national games, HBO Max or another TNT route, ESPN+ for eligible out-of-market games, and a local regional broadcaster for in-market games. Blackouts and NHL Network exclusions still prevented a universal guarantee.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: For the 2025-26 NHL season, ESPN+ was the main out-of-market option, but it was not an all-games pass. Local fans needed their team’s regional broadcaster, national viewers needed ESPN/ABC or TNT access, and an antenna helped only with receivable local over-the-air broadcasts such as ABC. Always check the game and ZIP code before subscribing.
