Hunger Games movies in chronological order
Chronological order follows the events in Panem rather than the films’ release dates. The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is set 64 years before Katniss’s story, according to the Rotten Tomatoes guide. Sunrise on the Reaping is set 24 years before The Hunger Games, beginning on the morning of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell, according to Lionsgate.

Which order should you choose?
For a first watch: release order
Release order is the straightforward choice if you want to experience the series as audiences originally did: the four Katniss films first, followed by the prequel that arrived in 2023. This is a viewing recommendation based on release chronology, not a claim about the filmmakers’ stated intent.
For a timeline-focused rewatch: chronological order
Chronological order puts the prequel stories before Katniss’s. Once Sunrise on the Reaping is available, place it between The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and The Hunger Games.
