Watch the seven core Alien films in story order as Prometheus, Alien: Covenant, Alien, Alien: Romulus, Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien: Resurrection. This is the in-universe chronology—not the order audiences first saw them. Hulu’s guide places the stories in the following years.
Alien movies in chronological order
- Prometheus (2089) — The prequel begins a storyline about investigating the origins of human life.
- Alien: Covenant (2104) — A colony-ship story that follows the events of Prometheus.
- Alien (2122) — The original film’s story begins the central sequence that continues in the later movies.
- Alien: Romulus (2142) — Set between Alien and Aliens, it follows young space colonists scavenging a derelict station.
- Aliens (2179) — The story takes place 57 years after Alien.
- Alien 3 (2179) — It follows directly after Aliens.
- Alien: Resurrection (2379) — Set about 200 years after Alien 3.
Hulu’s Alien watch-order guide is the source for this seven-film sequence and its story-year labels. The theatrical release years are different: Prometheus was released in 2012, Covenant in 2017, and Romulus in 2024.

Should you watch in chronological or release order?
For a first viewing, Hulu recommends release order. That route lets you encounter the series as audiences originally did, with the prequels later adding backstory. Chronological order is a useful option if you already know the films and want to follow the events from earliest to latest.
| Viewing route | Order | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Chronological | Prometheus → Alien: Covenant → Alien → Alien: Romulus → Aliens → Alien 3 → Alien: Resurrection | Viewers who want the story events in timeline order. |
| Release | Alien (1979) → Aliens (1986) → Alien 3 (1992) → Alien: Resurrection (1997) → Prometheus (2012) → Alien: Covenant (2017) → Alien: Romulus (2024) | First-time viewers following Hulu’s recommendation. |
Where does Alien: Earth fit?
Alien: Earth is a television series, not a movie. Hulu places it in 2120, between Alien: Covenant and Alien. If you want the screen-story chronology rather than a movie-only marathon, insert the series after Covenant and before Alien.

Are the Alien vs. Predator movies part of the order?
Alien vs. Predator and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem are optional crossover films, both set in 2004 according to Hulu’s expanded chronology. Hulu describes the Alien and Predator movies as separate entities with their own characters and storylines, so these crossovers are not included in the seven-film core list above.
