YouTube TV has a Library → Purchased shelf for eligible movie purchases, but this is not a new feature: access was reported on April 1, 2021. Whether an older YouTube purchase appears in YouTube TV can depend on the title, account and device. The YouTube app remains the fallback for checking and watching purchases.
What the YouTube TV Purchased shelf does
The shelf provides another place to stream eligible movie purchases without switching from YouTube TV to the separate YouTube app. It does not transfer a purchase, turn a movie into a YouTube TV DVR recording, or remove the title from your YouTube purchase library. The original rollout was described as bringing existing YouTube movie purchases into YouTube TV; current Google documentation most directly explains purchases and rentals made through YouTube TV, so it does not guarantee that every older YouTube purchase will appear on every device. Android Headlines reported the feature on April 1, 2021; Google’s current YouTube TV help page describes the Purchased location.

A YouTube TV subscription is not necessarily required to watch a movie already bought through YouTube: the YouTube app can provide access to purchases on supported devices. YouTube TV is useful if you already use its TV-oriented app and the movie is available there.
How to find and play a movie
- Open the YouTube TV app on a compatible smart-TV device.
- Sign in with the Google account used to buy the movie.
- Open Library, then choose Purchased.
- Select the movie and start playback.
If the shelf is missing or the title is hard to find, search YouTube TV for the exact movie title. Open its detail page and check whether an owned or purchased playback option is offered. Labels can vary slightly by device or app release. The YouTube TV help page documents the Library → Purchased path; the 2021 report also described finding titles through search.

Use the Google account that made the purchase
YouTube purchases are associated with the Google account used to buy them. If YouTube TV is signed into a different account, the movie may not appear. To verify the purchase, open YouTube in a browser while signed into the suspected account and check its purchase library or Your Movies & TV. Google explains account access in its help for watching purchased movies and shows.
Older YouTube and Google Play Movies & TV purchases
At the time of the 2021 rollout, reporting said the YouTube TV shelf also covered eligible movies originating in Google Play Movies & TV, whose purchases were available through YouTube’s movie library. That historical description is not a blanket current guarantee for every legacy title, account or device. If an older movie is absent from YouTube TV, first confirm that it appears in the YouTube purchase library; that library is the better place to establish whether the account has the title.

Device support and Apple TV
YouTube TV movie playback is limited to compatible devices; Google’s help identifies compatible smart-TV devices rather than promising support on every television or streamer. Apple TV can play a movie already purchased through YouTube TV, but the YouTube TV app on Apple TV cannot be used to buy or rent a movie.
This is distinct from support in the regular YouTube app. Google lists YouTube movie playback across smart TVs, Apple TV, Android TV, Fire TV, Roku, mobile devices, computers and selected game consoles. That broader YouTube-app list does not mean the YouTube TV Purchased shelf is guaranteed on all those devices. Purchases, rentals and household access
A purchase is account-based access, not physical ownership
A purchased movie is intended to remain available through the account indefinitely, subject to Google’s service rules and title availability. It is not a physical copy or a transferable ownership right. See Google’s purchased-content guidance.
Rentals expire
Rentals are not equivalent to purchases. Google says a rental typically gives you 30 days to start watching and usually 48 hours to finish after playback begins; the checkout terms control if they differ. An expired rental may no longer be playable. See Google’s purchase and rental rules.

YouTube TV family groups do not automatically share movie purchases
Google says only the YouTube TV head of household can make a movie rental or purchase through YouTube TV, and those purchases cannot be shared with other family members on the account. Do not assume another family member’s profile will see the same Purchased shelf. Details are in YouTube TV’s movie help.
What to do if a movie is missing
- Confirm the title is in the purchase library. In YouTube, check Your Movies & TV or the purchase area of Library. If it is not there, check the receipt or transaction history before treating it as a purchase. Google explains where to find purchased content.
- Check the Google account. Compare the account in YouTube TV with the one that shows the purchase in YouTube. Sign out and back in to YouTube TV using the matching account.
- Rule out an expired rental. Review the transaction details and rental window; a rental can disappear after its viewing period.
- Search for the title. Try the full name, then the name without its release year, and inspect the result’s detail page.
- Update and restart the app and device. Google advises using the latest YouTube app for purchased content; updating YouTube TV is a sensible troubleshooting step, though not a universal requirement stated for every device.
- Test playback in YouTube. If the movie plays there but not in YouTube TV, the purchase itself is likely still accessible; investigate the YouTube TV device, account context or app instead.
- Check region and resolution. Movie availability varies by country and title. HD or UHD playback depends on title, device and connection, so a higher resolution may not be offered on a particular setup. See regional and rental information and playback guidance.
Offline viewing uses the YouTube app
The YouTube TV Purchased shelf is for streaming, not downloading movies for offline viewing. Google supports downloads of purchased movies in the YouTube mobile app on supported iOS and Android devices; YouTube Premium is not required for a purchased movie download. Google says purchased content can be downloaded on up to five devices, and UHD is not available for downloads. See YouTube’s offline-download instructions.
