Rai makes some content available internationally, while territorial rights can block films, sport, music and other titles. A VPN connected to Italy may help with some Italy-only streams, but it is not guaranteed, does not grant viewing rights and may conflict with a provider’s terms.
The best route depends on whether you are travelling temporarily, living abroad, watching free television, or using a paid service.
Choose the right route first
| What you want to watch | Best first option | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| RaiPlay news, shows or live channels | Try RaiPlay without a VPN | Availability varies by programme and territory |
| Rai programming for permanent residents abroad | Rai Italia or an authorised local distributor | International schedules differ from domestic RaiPlay |
| Mediaset Infinity | Use Mediaset’s official travel or international service | Mediaset says VPN connections are not permitted |
| Sky Italia while travelling in Europe | Use Sky Go if eligible | Portability is for qualifying Italian residents on temporary travel |
| Italian sport | Check the rights-holder’s rules for your country | Rights are event-specific; DAZN does not support VPN use |
Do not treat RaiPlay, Mediaset Infinity, Sky Go and DAZN as interchangeable. Each service has different licences, travel rules and technical restrictions.
Is RaiPlay available outside Italy?
Yes, the RaiPlay website and apps can be reachable worldwide, but that does not mean the entire Italian catalogue is available everywhere. Rai says individual programmes and live streams remain subject to territorial rights restrictions. A programme may be playable in one country and blocked in another because Rai does not hold international rights for a film, sports event, soundtrack or licensed series.

RaiPlay’s international availability is therefore title-by-title. Registration or signing in with a free RaiPlay account can be required, but an account does not remove geographic restrictions. Visit RaiPlay, search for the exact programme or channel, and test playback before paying for anything.
Rai’s position, recorded by the Italian Senate on 10 June 2026, is that RaiPlay can be accessed worldwide while individual content remains governed by rights applying to Italy. See the Senate record.
Do you need a VPN for RaiPlay?
| Your situation | Is a VPN necessary? | Recommended approach |
|---|---|---|
| In Italy | No | Use RaiPlay normally |
| Temporarily elsewhere in the EU | Not necessarily | Test the programme first; free-content portability is not automatic |
| Permanently outside Italy | Sometimes | Check international availability, then consider a reputable VPN for Italy-only content |
| Seeking Rai’s international channel | No | Use Rai Italia or an authorised provider |
| Seeking Mediaset Infinity | Usually not useful | Follow Mediaset’s official international and subscription rules |
| Seeking DAZN Italia | No dependable workaround | Follow DAZN’s country and travel rules |
A VPN encrypts the connection between your device and a VPN server. When that server is in Italy, a streaming service will generally see the server’s Italian IP address instead of your home IP address. Playback may work if the service accepts that IP and the title is available through the Italian service.
It can still fail. Streaming platforms block known VPN addresses, and apps may check GPS, Wi-Fi positioning, cellular signals or other location data. A VPN changes an apparent network location; it does not create a subscription, change copyright ownership or guarantee permission to view a programme.

How to try RaiPlay with a VPN
- Choose a VPN that offers Italian server locations and supports your device.
- Install the provider’s official app and connect to Italy.
- Close and reopen the RaiPlay app or browser.
- Sign in to RaiPlay or create an account if requested.
- Test the specific channel or programme you want, rather than assuming the whole service works.
- If playback fails, try another Italian server or the provider’s automatic protocol.
- Clear RaiPlay cookies or use a private browser window.
- If the app exposes a conflicting location, review its location permission and reconnect.
ExpressVPN describes this general workflow for RaiPlay, but its instructions are a vendor claim—not an independent guarantee that every stream will work. NordVPN says its SmartPlay feature is integrated into its apps and works after connecting to a server. Both providers warn, in different ways, that compatibility can change.

Watching Italian TV on a television
Android TV and Google TV
Install RaiPlay from the device’s app store if it is available, install a compatible VPN app, connect to Italy and restart RaiPlay. Native Android TV support is usually simpler than configuring a router.
Amazon Fire TV
Install RaiPlay if it is offered in your local Amazon app store, install a supported VPN and connect to an Italian location. App availability depends on the country, device and account settings. Changing an app-store region does not guarantee access and can affect billing or existing subscriptions.
Apple TV, Samsung, LG, Roku and Chromecast
Native VPN support is not universal. Depending on the model, alternatives include:
- a VPN-compatible router;
- a supported streaming device with a VPN app;
- sharing a VPN connection from a computer;
- watching on a phone or laptop and using supported casting; or
- an authorised international television package.
Casting is not guaranteed to carry the VPN connection to the receiving television. Router-level installation or a VPN-compatible streaming device is more reliable for whole-home playback. Check the exact model and operating system in the provider’s supported-device documentation or NordVPN’s TV setup guide.

Legal and official alternatives
Rai Italia and authorised packages
Rai Italia is an international Rai channel distributed through authorised providers in selected markets. Its schedule and catalogue are not identical to domestic RaiPlay, but it can be a better long-term choice for someone permanently abroad who wants a legitimate Italian-language channel without repeatedly testing VPN servers. Rai’s foreign-offer documentation is available in its international distribution material.
Temporary travel within the EU
EU cross-border portability rules generally allow qualifying paid online-content subscriptions to remain available when an eligible subscriber temporarily travels in another EU country. This is not a universal right to every Italian free stream, and it does not turn permanent residence abroad into temporary travel.
The European Union explains that portability mainly concerns paid services, while providers may choose whether to extend similar access to free services. See Your Europe’s online-content guidance.
Mediaset Infinity abroad
Mediaset has separate rules and should not be treated as a RaiPlay workaround.
According to Mediaset’s official guidance:
- Eligible Infinity+ or Gold subscriptions activated in Italy may remain usable during temporary travel in EU member states.
- The user may need to satisfy Italian residence or subscription-eligibility requirements.
- Outside the EU—including the UK—Mediaset directs viewers toward Mediaset International, which offers a selection of live and on-demand content.
- Mediaset says its platform does not permit VPN connections.
For Mediaset, the official international service is the cleaner option where it contains the programme you want. It may not include the complete domestic catalogue or every Italian live event.

Sky Go and Italian sport abroad
Sky says qualifying Italian residential subscribers may use Sky Go and the Sky Sport app while temporarily travelling in EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, subject to verification and subscription conditions. The arrangement is not a general method of establishing permanent access from another country.

Sport is particularly difficult because rights are event-specific and frequently change. DAZN Italia explicitly says it does not support VPN use in its VPN FAQ. A valid Italian subscription may not give you the right to watch from every country, so check DAZN’s official rules for the relevant country, plan and event.

“This programme is not available in your country”
First determine whether the problem affects one title or RaiPlay generally.
- Turn off the VPN and test a clearly international RaiPlay title.
- Try both the official app and a browser.
- Sign out and back in.
- Clear RaiPlay cookies or use a private browser window.
- If using a VPN, reconnect to another Italian server.
- Check whether GPS, Wi-Fi or cellular location conflicts with the VPN location.
- Try another network, such as mobile data instead of hotel Wi-Fi.
- If only one title fails, treat it as a likely rights restriction.
If you are physically in Italy but the service thinks you are abroad, the cause may be an incorrect IP-location database. Mediaset’s guidance recommends checking the IP location and contacting the ISP or customer care where necessary; its example is described in this geographic-location error article.

The VPN connects but playback is refused
The Italian IP may belong to a recognised VPN range. Try another server once or twice, use the provider’s official app and check whether the browser works as a diagnostic. If every server fails while other titles work without the VPN, assume the IP range is blocked rather than endlessly changing settings.
Free VPNs are a poor choice for streaming because they may be congested, heavily blocked or funded through intrusive advertising and data collection. A Smart DNS service may alter DNS behaviour, but it is not equivalent to a VPN’s encryption or privacy features.
Video buffers or quality drops
- Choose a nearby Italian server instead of repeatedly selecting distant locations.
- Try the VPN’s automatic or fastest protocol.
- Lower video quality temporarily.
- Use strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet where possible.
- Pause other downloads and uploads.
- Test the same stream without the VPN to identify whether the VPN is the bottleneck.
A VPN can add distance and processing overhead. It does not inherently prevent buffering.
Is paying for a VPN worthwhile?
Consider a VPN only when all of the following are true: the exact content is Italy-only, no authorised international option covers it, the provider supports your device, and you accept that the broadcaster may block the connection or prohibit VPN use.

When comparing providers, check:
- the number and stability of Italian server locations;
- support for Android TV, Fire TV, routers and your particular television;
- the refund period;
- privacy and data-retention policies;
- customer support;
- simultaneous-device limits; and
- introductory pricing versus renewal pricing.

Quick Recap
What not to do
- Do not assume that opening RaiPlay means every programme is available.
- Do not treat a VPN as a copyright licence or guaranteed entitlement.
- Do not recommend a VPN as the main Mediaset Infinity or DAZN solution when those services explicitly restrict or do not support VPN use.
- Do not rely on unofficial IPTV or “free sports” websites; they create copyright, malware, privacy and account-security risks.
- Do not falsify billing information or assume changing an app-store country will solve distribution restrictions.
