Whether your usual streaming service works abroad depends on your home country, destination, provider and the programme you want to watch. If you pay for an online content service in an EU country and travel temporarily to another EU country, EU portability rules generally let you use your home service there. Outside that framework, check the provider’s current travel policy; do not assume your home catalogue or a free broadcaster app will be available.
What changes when you watch TV abroad?
Internet TV access is shaped by both your subscription and the rights a service has in each country. An app may open abroad while showing a different selection of programmes, or a particular live channel, event or title may not be available at your destination. The practical question is not only whether the service works, but whether it carries the programme you want there.
For travel within the EU, paid subscriptions have a specific portability protection. For other routes, the applicable law and provider policy can differ; the official guidance cited here establishes the EU case, not a worldwide rule.
When does EU portability protect a subscription?
Regulation (EU) 2017/1128 covers qualifying paid online content services when a subscriber travels temporarily to another EU country and accesses the service from their country of residence. The European Commission’s Your Europe guidance says: “When you travel to another EU country, you have the right to access your paid-for online content services in the same way as in your home country.” It describes access to the same content, on the same range and number of devices, for the same number of users and with the same functionality, without an extra portability charge.

It is portability of your home service, not a foreign subscription
The protection lets an eligible subscriber use their home-country service while travelling; it does not give everyone the right to sign up for a service intended for residents of another country. The European Commission’s portability FAQ gives the example of a Spanish sports-app subscriber who can use the subscription on holiday in Estonia, while an Estonian resident is not thereby entitled to subscribe to that Spanish service.
Free services are treated differently
A provider of free online content can choose whether to make it available outside its home country. Do not count on a free broadcaster app travelling with you in the way a qualifying paid subscription does; check the provider’s availability information for your destination.

Providers may verify your country of residence
EU guidance allows providers to verify a subscriber’s country of residence using permitted evidence, which can include identity information, payment details or an internet contract. Keep your account and residence details accurate. If a service does not recognize your eligibility while you are travelling within the EU, contact its support team to ask what information it needs.
Will you see the same shows, films and live programmes?
Do not assume the catalogue is identical across countries. Netflix says its show and film selection, as well as audio and subtitle options, varies by country. Check the specific title in the destination rather than relying on its presence in your home catalogue. Its help page on watching while travelling or moving explains that country differences can affect what is available.

That is a provider-specific example, not a guarantee about every streaming service. If you want a documentary, live channel or sports event, check its destination availability directly; an app being supported in a country does not establish that every programme is available there.
How to prepare before you leave
- Check the route and service. Confirm that your destination is supported by the provider and app. If you are travelling between EU countries, check that your subscription is a paid service associated with your country of residence.
- Look up the exact programme. Check the title, live channel or event for the destination country, not just the service’s general availability.
- Download what you may need offline. Prime Video says users of compatible devices can download titles before travelling to watch offline. Availability depends on the title and device, so check in the app and open the download before departure. See Prime Video’s download guidance.
- Check account details. Make sure your home-country, household or residence settings are accurate. For EU portability issues, ask the provider how it verifies your country of residence.
- Plan your connection. If you expect to stream over hotel Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot, check that the connection is usable. Review mobile data and roaming costs with your mobile provider; charges and allowances depend on your plan and destination.
Using a streaming stick with a hotel television
A portable HDMI streaming stick can help you run compatible apps on a television, but it solves a connection problem, not a programme-rights problem. It cannot guarantee that a title is available in the country you are visiting or override a service’s location restrictions.

Before packing one, make sure the television has an accessible HDMI port, you have usable power, Wi-Fi is available, and the device and app support the service you need. What to do outside the EU
Do not assume EU portability protection applies to a trip that begins or ends outside the EU. The rules and provider policies for those routes are not established by the EU guidance above. Check the streaming service’s current travel help page, destination availability information and relevant local guidance. Because service terms and catalogues can change, verify them close to departure.
