One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a first viewing, watch the five Indiana Jones films in release order. That preserves the way the character, his allies, recurring ideas, and the franchise’s changing tone were introduced.
A chronological rewatch is also possible, but it requires splitting the opening sections from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, since both films begin in an earlier period than their main stories.
Best order for a first-time viewer: release order
The theatrical films should normally be watched in this sequence:
- Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (Raiders of the Lost Ark) — 1981
- Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom — 1984
- Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade — 1989
- Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull — 2008
- Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny — 2023
This is the safest order for newcomers because it follows the films’ original introductions and release-era progression. It also avoids treating later explanations, character developments, or references as if they were already known.

#1 Best Overall
There are currently five theatrical Indiana Jones films. The official Lucasfilm listing uses the longer title Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, although the 1981 film is commonly called Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Chronological order of the story
For a rewatch organized by the years in which the events occur, use this more precise sequence:
| Order | Story section | Year |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Opening sequence of The Last Crusade | 1912 |
| 2 | The Temple of Doom | 1935 |
| 3 | Raiders of the Lost Ark | 1936 |
| 4 | Main story of The Last Crusade | 1938 |
| 5 | Opening sequence of The Dial of Destiny | 1944 |
| 6 | The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull | 1957 |
| 7 | Main story of The Dial of Destiny | 1969 |
This is not a simple matter of putting the five films in a different line. The Last Crusade starts with a 1912 sequence before moving to its principal 1938 adventure. The Dial of Destiny likewise opens during World War II in 1944, then jumps to its main 1969 setting.
Rank #2
Why The Temple of Doom comes before Raiders chronologically
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is set in 1935, making it the earliest complete feature-film adventure. Raiders of the Lost Ark follows in 1936.
That does not make The Temple of Doom the first film to watch. It was released in 1984, three years after Raiders. Its earlier setting is a deliberate prequel placement, not a production or continuity mistake. The release order remains the better introduction to the character and the series.
Should you watch Young Indiana Jones?
The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones, originally broadcast as The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, is an optional prequel series. It follows Indy through childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood, including adventures during World War I.
Rank #3
You do not need it to understand the five films. The movies provide a complete viewing sequence on their own, so most viewers should watch the films first:
- Raiders of the Lost Ark
- The Temple of Doom
- The Last Crusade
- The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
- The Dial of Destiny
- The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones — optional companion viewing
If you want to include the series as a chronological prequel, place it before the films. Be aware that the version available today is not arranged exactly like the original television broadcasts. Lucasfilm later re-edited the material into 22 feature-length episodes in chronological order, and the Disney+ presentation follows that re-edited structure.

Lucasfilm identifies Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny as available to stream on Disney+. Catalogs vary by country and can change, so check the title’s listing in your region before planning a marathon.
For the United States, Disney+ announced that the first four films—Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Temple of Doom, The Last Crusade, and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull—would be available beginning January 1, 2026. Availability outside the U.S. may differ.
Common mistakes about the viewing order
- Starting with The Temple of Doom because it is set first. It is the earliest complete film chronologically, but release order is more effective for a first watch.
- Assuming every film takes place in one uninterrupted year. Both The Last Crusade and The Dial of Destiny contain major time jumps.
- Treating Young Indiana Jones as required viewing. The series adds backstory but is not necessary for the theatrical films.
- Assuming The Dial of Destiny is entirely set in 1969. Its main story takes place in 1969, but its opening sequence is set in 1944.
