When was Apple TV+ free?
Apple’s formal announcement set the all-access promotion for January 3–5, 2025. Apple TV social posts and some reports referred to January 4–5, but the press-release dates are the clearest official record. Read Apple’s announcement at Apple.com.
Apple did not publish a universal start time. Contemporaneous reporting said access began at about 5 p.m. local time on Friday, January 3; that timing should be treated as reported guidance, not a detailed Apple term.
This was a temporary promotional viewing event, not the normal seven-day trial and not a recurring annual offer.

How access worked
Apple devices
- Open the Apple TV app on an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV device.
- Select Sign In and use an Apple ID, or create one.
- Choose an Apple TV+ show or film and select its play button.
Smart TVs, streaming devices, and consoles
- Open or install the Apple TV app on a supported Samsung, LG, Sony, VIZIO, TCL, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast with Google TV, PlayStation, or Xbox device.
- Choose Sign In and complete the on-screen sign-in process.
- Select a title and start playback.
Web browser
- Go to tv.apple.com.
- Select Sign In and log in with an Apple ID.
- Choose a program and start playback.
Screen labels can vary by device, operating system, country, and app version. Apple’s announcement confirmed supported access through the Apple TV app and website, but did not document every individual screen.
Did you need an Apple TV 4K box?
No. Apple TV+ is a streaming service delivered through the Apple TV app and tv.apple.com. An Apple TV 4K was one compatible option, alongside phones, tablets, computers, smart TVs, streaming players, consoles, and browsers.

Did you need a subscription or payment method?
Apple said an Apple ID was required. That is an account login, not the same thing as purchasing an Apple TV+ subscription. Apple’s announcement did not say viewers had to start a paid plan or enter payment details for the weekend. It also did not publish a detailed redemption-code process.
The event was separate from Apple’s standard seven-day trial and from the three-month offer associated with qualifying new Apple hardware. Simply watching during the event should not be described as automatic enrollment in either offer.

What could you watch?
Apple promoted access to its Apple TV+ library and highlighted these programs and films:

Apple described the event as an all-access pass, but catalog availability can differ by country. The highlighted list should not be read as a guarantee that every title was available in every region.

If the promotion did not appear
- Check that the date and reported start time had arrived.
- Confirm an internet connection and update or restart the Apple TV app.
- Sign out and back in with the intended Apple ID.
- Try tv.apple.com in a browser as a fallback.
- Confirm that Apple TV+ was available in your country or region.
- Check whether the television, console, or streaming player was supported and running a compatible app version.
- Do not select a paid subscription button unless you intend to subscribe.
Apple’s general promotional-offer guidance recommends checking eligibility, terms, account sign-in, and device qualification when an offer does not appear. That guidance concerns promotional trials generally, not necessarily this specific weekend. If payment was requested during the stated window, Apple Support was the appropriate escalation route; the event has since expired.

The January 2025 weekend is over. Apple’s current U.S. Apple TV page lists a standalone plan at $12.99 per month after a seven-day trial, subject to change by date and region: Apple TV.

Prices, eligibility, included services, and regional catalogs can change. Do not buy Apple hardware solely for a streaming trial unless you already planned to make that purchase.
The Bottom Line
The Apple TV+ free weekend ran January 3–5, 2025 and required an Apple ID plus a supported device or browser. It ended January 5, so current viewers must use Apple’s available trial, subscription, bundle, or student-plan options instead.
