Use a YouTube Clip to share a specific 5–60-second moment from a live stream, then point viewers to the scheduled event or replay. For promotion you control as the creator, YouTube Studio highlights are a separate option: they let you make a trimmed video during or after a stream. A Clip may not be playable until the live stream ends and uploads, so it is not always a real-time promo.
Choose the right format for the moment
| Format | Where it appears | When it is available | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Clip | A segment attached to the original video’s watch page; it loops from that page. | For a live stream, playback may wait until the stream ends and uploads. | 5–60 seconds. Viewers must be able to watch the source video. DVR availability and its time window can restrict a live-stream Clip. |
| Studio highlight | A trimmed video created in YouTube Studio with its own title, privacy setting and description. | During or after the stream. | YouTube’s cited highlight guidance does not specify a fixed duration. Stream markers can help you find moments to edit. |
| Short highlight from a mobile livestream | A Short made from an eligible mobile livestream. | After the qualifying stream. | Requires a 10-minute-to-12-hour vertical stream made with the YouTube mobile app, chat enabled, not Made for Kids, and compliance with safety standards. The saved highlight defaults to private. |
| Video Clips & Shorts Studio tool | A new video or Short draft made from an existing long-form video. | After the source video exists. | Selection can use transcript, timestamps or AI suggestions where available. This is an upload/draft workflow, not a viewer Clip linked to the source watch page. |
Use a Clip when you want a quick, shareable excerpt that leads back to the source. Use a Studio highlight when you want a separately edited video whose title, description and privacy you control. Choose a Short highlight only if your mobile livestream meets YouTube’s eligibility conditions.
Prepare the stream and promotion
- Schedule or prepare your YouTube live stream. Copy its event URL so you can share the same destination before and during the event.
- Share the link in advance. YouTube recommends sharing the streaming link at least 48 hours before going live. Its guidance also suggests connecting social accounts and embedding the event URL on a website.
- Give the preview context. State what the stream will cover and when it starts, then make the next step clear: watch the scheduled stream or its replay. This is useful editorial framing, not a guarantee of more views.
- Check livestream eligibility if setup is new. YouTube says a creator needs a verified channel with no livestream restriction in the past 90 days, and users must be at least 16 to livestream.
Mark strong moments while you are live
- When a useful, surprising or especially clear moment happens, add a stream marker in YouTube Studio if your workflow allows it. Markers make promising sections easier to find later.
- YouTube recommends creating highlight clips during the event. Keep the format distinction in mind: a Studio highlight can be created during a stream, while a viewer-style Clip from a livestream may not play until the stream has ended and uploaded.
- If a Clip or highlight is available to share, add a short explanation and a direct link to the live event. Do not promise that every live-stream Clip is immediately watchable.
Create and share a Clip
On a computer
- Sign in to YouTube and open an eligible video. For a livestream, use the stream or its available archive.
- Select More → Clip.
- Choose a segment between 5 and 60 seconds, then give it a title of up to 140 characters.
- Select the sharing option: copy the link, share to a social platform or email, or use the embed option.
On mobile
- Open the video in the YouTube app and select the Clip option.
- Adjust the selection slider to the moment you want, within the 5–60-second range.
- Title the Clip and choose a sharing option.
A Clip is not a standalone copy of the source: viewers need access to the original video to watch it. You can review Clips made from your videos in the Clips library and Studio, and inspect clip views and other performance details in Studio.
Create a Studio highlight
- Use stream markers to note moments worth revisiting, when possible.
- In YouTube Studio, open the stream workflow and create a highlight during or after the event.
- Trim to the segment you want, then choose its title, privacy setting and description.
- Publish the highlight and share it with a link to the live event or archive when that route is useful.
The highlight is a creator-edited video asset, unlike the viewer Clip that loops from the original watch page. Do not assume that the 5–60-second Clip limit applies to highlights.

Turn a qualifying mobile livestream into a Short highlight
YouTube’s Short-highlight option is specific to mobile livestreams. The stream must last 10 minutes to 12 hours, be vertical, use the YouTube mobile app, have chat enabled, not be Made for Kids, and meet YouTube’s safety standards. The resulting highlight is private by default; change its visibility to public if you want it discoverable as a Short. If the stream misses any condition, use a Clip or Studio highlight instead.
Keep the archive useful after the event
- Create a Studio highlight or a Clip from the archived stream, depending on whether you want an edited video or a source-linked excerpt.
- Keep the original stream available to viewers if you want its Clips to keep working. A Clip can stop working if the source is deleted, made private or violates Community Guidelines.
- Organize the archive and highlights into playlists. YouTube’s live-promotion guidance recommends public archives and playlists to help people find past streams.
- Turn off viewer clipping in YouTube Studio settings if you do not want others to create Clips from your videos.
Troubleshooting: why a live-stream Clip may not work
| What you see | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The Clip is not playable yet. | The live stream has not ended or its upload is not available. | Wait for the stream to end and the archive to upload, then check the Clip again. |
| The selected moment cannot be clipped or played. | The stream may lack DVR, or the moment falls outside the available DVR window. | Choose a moment within the available window or make a Studio highlight from the stream or archive. |
| A shared Clip no longer opens. | The source video may have been deleted, made private or removed for a Community Guidelines issue. | Check the source video’s availability and privacy. Restore access if appropriate, or share an available archive or highlight instead. |
| The Clip option is unavailable. | The video may not be eligible, or viewer clipping may be disabled by the creator. | Check YouTube Studio settings for clipping controls; use a Studio highlight if you own the video. |
| A mobile-stream highlight is not available as a Short. | One or more mobile livestream conditions may not be met. | Confirm duration, vertical format, YouTube mobile app use, chat, audience setting and safety eligibility; otherwise use a Clip or Studio highlight. |
For livestream setup, YouTube’s current eligibility guidance should be checked directly because channel restrictions and platform rules can change.
