Turn on Loop Playlist to repeat the queue and leave Shuffle Playlist off if episodes must play in order. VLC’s documented playlist-broadcast example sends video over local-network HTTP; it is not the YouTube encoder workflow, which uses a server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
Before you start: check playback and rebroadcast rights
- Make sure each episode file plays locally and that you have the rights needed to publicly rebroadcast it. Permission may also be needed for music, artwork, clips, and other material included in an episode. Being able to listen to or download a podcast does not, by itself, grant permission to rebroadcast it.
- Use a computer that can run OBS Studio and VLC while sending the stream. In this local method, the computer, OBS, the media files, and the network need to remain available for playback and encoding.
Set up a podcast playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC. Match their architecture: for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS’s documented source setup is described in its Media Sources documentation; interface labels can change between versions.
- Create a scene and add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene, then open its properties. Add the local episode files in the sequence you want them to play.
- Set playback behavior. Leave Shuffle Playlist off to preserve the listed order. Enable Loop Playlist to restart from the beginning after the last episode. Looping controls the media queue; it does not keep OBS or the internet connection running.
- Build a visual for an audio-first show. Add a rights-cleared still image, title card, or other suitable visual to the scene. Confirm that it is visible and that OBS’s audio meters respond while the playlist plays.
Choose the right OBS source for your files
| Option | Best for | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| OBS VLC Video playlist | Multiple local episodes that should play in order or repeat | Requires VLC installed alongside OBS. Set the playlist order, loop, and shuffle options in the source properties. |
| OBS Media Source | One local episode that should repeat | Use its Loop setting. OBS documents common local audio formats such as MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, as well as common video containers. |
| VLC VideoLAN Manager (VLM) | A VLC-to-VLC or local-network HTTP broadcast | VideoLAN’s documented playlist example broadcasts over HTTP to a local receiver. That is different from YouTube’s encoder URL-and-key ingest workflow. |
OBS documents VLC Video playlists and Media Source options in its Media Sources guide. VideoLAN’s VLM playlist example illustrates the local HTTP approach.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select the live event you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the stream setup flow.
- Copy the event’s server URL and stream key into OBS. Enter them in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key as confidential: YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send video to your channel. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its encoder settings guidance specifies H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Check the current guidance and the options actually available in your encoder before going live; see YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Test the signal before the event. Start streaming from OBS and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. YouTube recommends testing ahead of an event. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and then start the event in Live Control Room.
Keep the stream running—and know what looping does not do
With OBS and VLC running locally, the episode queue can continue repeating while the computer and network stay available. If the computer sleeps, OBS closes, a file becomes unavailable, or the connection drops, playlist looping does not repair that failure or guarantee continuous uptime. For a scheduled broadcast, monitor the Live Control Room and use its preview and stream-health indicators to confirm the signal.
Troubleshoot common problems
- VLC Video source is missing or fails to load: Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS—for example, 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- Episodes play in the wrong order: Check the file sequence in the source properties and make sure Shuffle Playlist is off.
- The playlist stops after the final episode: Enable Loop Playlist. For a single file on Media Source, enable Loop instead.
- The picture is blank or audio is absent: Check that the intended source is visible in the scene, the files play locally, and OBS’s audio meters move during playback.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS stream: Recheck the server URL and stream key against the selected event, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Keep the key private while troubleshooting.
- The broadcast ends even though looping is enabled: Looping repeats the media queue; it does not keep the computer, OBS, or network connection active. Check that the local system and connection remain available.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube stream without a local computer running continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not live camera input. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free first day.
