FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options can retry some connection failures, but they do not save a playlist cursor. If you read an HLS live stream, use the HLS options for the starting segment and segment retries; if you publish a local playlist to YouTube Live, your scheduler or wrapper must save and restore the current item when FFmpeg restarts. First identify whether the failed connection is the input or the output.
First identify which side of FFmpeg failed
There are two different workflows that can sound like “a YouTube live stream”:
- Reading a live stream: FFmpeg receives an HTTP or HLS URL after
-i. Input reconnect and HLS demuxer options may apply. - Sending a program to YouTube Live: FFmpeg reads local media or a playlist and sends its output to YouTube’s ingest destination. Input reconnect flags do not repair an output-side connection, and transport reconnection does not remember which playlist item was playing.
Check the FFmpeg command and logs to locate the failed endpoint. Options are scoped to the protocol operation they configure; adding input flags cannot fix an output failure.
What HTTP reconnect options do—and do not do
For eligible HTTP input failures, reconnect options can retry the connection. The FFmpeg protocol documentation describes reconnect as reconnecting automatically when disconnected before EOF. That is transport recovery, not a durable record of the media position.

Choose options for the failure you expect
-reconnect 1: retry when disconnected before EOF.-reconnect_streamed 1: allow reconnect behavior for streamed or non-seekable HTTP inputs.-reconnect_on_network_error 1: retry TCP or TLS errors during connection establishment.-reconnect_at_eof 1: treat EOF as an error and reconnect. Use only when EOF should mean a continuing live stream, not the real end of the content. FFmpeg documents this as useful for live or endless streams.-reconnect_on_http_error: select HTTP status codes to retry only when the source may return those statuses transiently. Avoid retrying every error indiscriminately: authentication failures and unavailable resources usually need a different fix.
Set a retry budget
Use -reconnect_delay_max, -reconnect_max_retries, and, if supported by your build, -reconnect_delay_total_max to bound retries. The current FFmpeg implementation lists a 120-second maximum reconnect delay and a 256-second total delay maximum as defaults; reconnect_max_retries is unset, meaning unlimited retries. Defaults can vary by version, so inspect the installed binary rather than relying on these figures for an older packaged build.
Configure HLS start position and segment retries separately
When the input is an HLS live playlist, HTTP reconnect options do not decide which segment FFmpeg initially reads or what to do after an individual segment error. Those are HLS demuxer concerns.

-live_start_indexselects the segment offset used to start a live stream. Negative values count backward from the end of the current playlist.-prefer_x_start 1gives a playlist’s#EXT-X-STARTtag preference overlive_start_index.-seg_max_retrysets how many times to retry an errored segment instead of skipping it. The documented default is zero retries.
These settings address initial live start and segment-level errors, not a persistent cursor across FFmpeg process restarts. A live playlist may discard older segments; if the segment you need is no longer available, exact recovery is impossible from that playlist.
Example: retry an HTTP input
This schematic command configures HTTP input retries. Replace the example URL and output with values for your workflow, and verify that your installed FFmpeg build supports the options. It is not a YouTube-tested or gapless-recovery recipe.

ffmpeg
-reconnect 1
-reconnect_streamed 1
-reconnect_on_network_error 1
-reconnect_delay_max 30
-reconnect_max_retries 20
-i 'https://example.invalid/live.m3u8'
-c copy output.ts
The flags before -i configure the HTTP input in this example. They do not save or restore playlist position. Add HLS demuxer options only when the input is HLS and the behavior you need is initial segment selection or retrying a failed segment.
Preserve position across an FFmpeg restart
If FFmpeg’s process itself exits, exact continuation requires application-level state management. For a local playlist sent to YouTube Live, have the playlist driver, scheduler, or wrapper persist the current item identity and explicitly choose the restart policy.

- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
- Track the item currently being sent, not just the last command launched.
- Persist that item’s identity outside the FFmpeg process so it survives a restart.
- On restart, apply a deliberate policy: resume the current item if possible, advance to the next item, or replay from the beginning.
- For an HLS input, track a stable media sequence or other source-supported position only if the source and workflow make it reliable. Check whether the playlist still contains the needed media.
- Test the specific source, FFmpeg build, playlist driver, and output pipeline. Decide whether your priority is avoiding gaps, avoiding duplicates, or minimizing downtime; recovery may not achieve all three.
These steps follow from the separation between FFmpeg’s transport and HLS controls: neither documented option set provides a general persistent playlist cursor. They do not establish a YouTube-specific ingest resume guarantee. Confirm YouTube’s ingest behavior for your setup separately.

FFmpeg documentation changes over time, and older packaged builds may not recognize every option described here. Check the installed version and inspect its protocol and HLS demuxer help for the options you plan to use. If an option is rejected, consult documentation matching that binary rather than assuming a flag is available or behaves identically across versions.

Troubleshoot common recovery failures
- FFmpeg reconnects, but the playlist starts at the wrong item: reconnect retries transport; it does not restore a saved cursor. Persist and restore the item in the playlist driver.
- An input reconnect flag has no effect on a dropped YouTube output: identify the output-side failure and configure the publisher or wrapper for that connection. Input flags apply to the input operation.
- FFmpeg exits or waits indefinitely: set a retry count and delay budget appropriate to your deployment. Verify which delay limits your build supports.
- HLS skips a segment: check the HLS demuxer’s segment retry setting, including the documented zero-retry default. A retry cannot retrieve a segment the live playlist has already removed.
- Retries continue on an HTTP error: narrow the statuses selected for retry and investigate authentication or resource availability rather than treating every response as transient.
- The same item plays twice or a gap appears after restart: define whether restart resumes, advances, or replays, then test that policy. Exact, duplicate-free recovery is not guaranteed by reconnect flags.

Copyright and YouTube live readiness
Reconnect settings do not grant rights to the video or audio you stream. Before publishing, confirm you have permission to use every recording, music track, and other material in the program, and check YouTube’s current live-streaming rules and account requirements. Replaying a playlist repeatedly does not itself establish that the material is authorized or that the channel complies with YouTube policies.
