How to Use End Screens on a 24/7 YouTube Stream to Grow a Channel

End screens work on YouTube livestream archives, not as overlays on active broadcasts. Learn how to make archives usable, add relevant elements, and assess results.

You can use an end screen to guide viewers from a YouTube livestream archive to a related documentary, playlist, or subscription—but YouTube’s documented end-screen workflow applies to videos and their endings, not as an overlay on an active livestream. For a 24/7 channel, the first step is making sure YouTube actually captures an archive: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so do not assume one continuous broadcast will produce a complete video with an end screen.

Can you add an end screen to a YouTube live stream?

Not to the active broadcast using YouTube’s documented end-screen feature. End screens are added to a video in YouTube Studio’s Editor. After a live session ends and its archive is available, you can edit that archive and place end-screen elements at its ending. That gives viewers who watch the archive a next step; it does not add a clickable end screen to the live feed while it is running.

YouTube’s guidance says, “Feature elements that are relevant to the video.” For a documentary stream, that usually means sending viewers to a related film, a playlist on the same subject, or a subscribe prompt—not simply filling every available space.

Make sure the stream produces an archive you can edit

Do not rely on one uninterrupted 24/7 archive

YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24/7 session therefore cannot be assumed to create one complete archive that you can edit from beginning to end.

  • 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

If end screens and complete replays are part of your plan, use manageable live sessions, then verify that each archive exists and is complete before editing it. YouTube also recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. Segmenting a broadcast into shorter sessions is a practical response to the archive warning, not a YouTube guarantee of reach or channel growth.

Check archive visibility and organize the replay

YouTube’s live-promotion guidance says archives are uploaded automatically by default. It recommends setting an archive to Public to help increase future reach, organizing archives and highlights into playlists, and making suitable clips available. These are recommendations, not a promise that a replay will attract viewers. If an archive is missing or incomplete, an end screen cannot bridge viewers from the part that was not captured.

How to add an end screen to a live stream archive

  1. Open the archive: In YouTube Studio, select Content, then choose the livestream archive you want to edit. Confirm that the replay is available and that its ending is present.
  2. Open the end-screen editor: Open Editor, choose End Screen, and add the elements that fit the archive.
  3. Choose a useful destination: Add a related video or playlist, a Subscribe element, another channel, or—if you are in the YouTube Partner Program—an external website element. You can use up to four elements on a standard 16:9 video; other aspect ratios may allow fewer.
  4. Set timing and placement: Adjust when the elements appear and where they sit. YouTube recommends considering the last 20 seconds when editing. Leave visual room for the elements and, where suitable, use a clear spoken or on-screen call to action.
  5. Preview and save: Check that the end screen is readable, does not obscure important documentary imagery or credits, and points to the intended destination. Save your changes.

Choose elements for the viewer’s next step

  • Related video: Use this when one documentary or topic naturally leads into another.
  • Playlist: Use this when viewers may want to continue through a collection, such as a series or a subject-based set of films.
  • Subscribe: Add this when a viewer who has reached the end may want more work from your channel.
  • Another channel or external website: Use these only when they serve the viewer’s next step. The external website element is available to creators in the YouTube Partner Program.

Four elements are a maximum for a standard 16:9 video, not a target. A focused end screen with one relevant viewing option and, where appropriate, a subscribe prompt may be clearer than a crowded ending.

Check where end screens appear

Viewers can hide end screens, and YouTube lists contexts where they do not appear: mobile web (except iPad mobile web), YouTube Music, YouTube Kids, Flash videos, and 360 videos. End screens are also unavailable when a video is set as Made for Kids. Do not make a critical link or instruction available only through an end-screen element.

Measure whether viewers use the end screen

For an individual archive, open its Analytics > Engagement report and review End screen element click rate. Compare relevant archives and destinations over time rather than treating one result as proof that an end screen caused a change in views or subscribers.

Put that figure in the context of the broader viewer journey. YouTube’s live analytics guidance points to appeal (impressions and click-through rate), engagement (views), and satisfaction (average view duration). Traffic sources and search terms can help show how viewers found the stream or replay. Compare like with like: a topic-focused documentary, a long ambient broadcast, and a highlights session may draw different audiences and viewing behavior. These signals help diagnose performance; they do not establish that an end screen alone grew the channel.
