How to Use an iPhone or iPad as a Webcam for Streaming

Use Continuity Camera to stream with an iPhone on a compatible Mac, or choose an OBS phone-camera option for other setups. Apple’s native Mac guidance does not establish iPad webcam support for Mac.

You can use an iPhone as a webcam for streaming on a compatible Mac with Apple’s built-in Continuity Camera: enable it on the iPhone, meet Apple’s device requirements, then choose the phone as the camera in your streaming app. Apple’s documented Mac setup is for iPhone, not iPad. For OBS or a Windows/Linux setup, use a compatible third-party phone-camera method instead.

What works with a Mac—and what does not

Apple’s Continuity Camera lets a supported iPhone act as a webcam or microphone for a compatible Mac. Apple specifies an iPhone XR or later running iOS 16 or later and a Mac running macOS Ventura 13 or later. The Mac must also support that macOS version.

Apple’s reviewed guidance describes native iPhone-to-Mac webcam use. It does not establish native iPad-as-Mac-webcam support. Apple separately documents certain iPhone and iPad models as webcams for Apple TV; that is a different use case, not an iPad-to-Mac setup.

For streaming, the iPhone supplies the camera feed to a Mac app. You still configure and start the stream in that app, such as OBS. Continuity Camera does not itself start a livestream.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Set up iPhone Continuity Camera on a Mac

  1. Check compatibility. Confirm the iPhone is an iPhone XR or later with iOS 16 or later, and the Mac supports macOS Ventura 13 or later. Apple lists these as eligibility requirements for the Mac webcam feature. Apple’s Continuity Camera guide and Apple’s Continuity requirements have the current requirements.
  2. Connect the devices through the same Apple Account. Sign in to the same Apple Account on both, turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and keep the devices within 10 metres (30 feet), the maximum distance in Apple’s setup guidance. Apple’s Mac setup guide covers the connection requirements.
  3. Enable Continuity Camera on the iPhone. Open Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity and turn on Continuity Camera. Apple says this setting is on by default, but it is worth checking if the Mac does not find the phone.
  4. Mount and position the phone. Use a stable stand or mount, orient the iPhone in landscape as a sensible starting point, and make sure the rear camera is unobstructed and aimed at you. A mount is useful for steady framing; it is not required for a wireless connection.
  5. Choose a connection. Continuity Camera works wirelessly or by USB. For USB, connect the phone to the Mac and accept a Trust This Computer prompt if it appears. Plugging into the Mac or a USB charger can keep the phone charged during use.
  6. Select the camera in your streaming app. Open the app on the Mac and use its camera or video settings to select the iPhone. The control’s location varies by app. In OBS, choose it as the camera for a video capture source if it is available there.
  7. Check the shot before streaming. Confirm the expected camera appears, the framing is right, and the rear lens remains clear. Then configure and start your stream using the streaming app’s normal workflow.

Choose wireless or USB

Connection Useful when Trade-offs and notes
Wireless You want to place the phone without a cable and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are available. Keep the devices nearby. Apple notes that, while Continuity Camera is wireless, an iPhone may disconnect from Wi-Fi to optimize the feature and use cellular data for background networking. Plugging the phone in or turning off cellular data can prevent that behavior.
USB You want a direct connection, need to charge the phone, or are troubleshooting a wireless connection. Use a cable compatible with the ports on both devices. Accept trust or allow prompts if shown; reconnect the cable if necessary.

Apple documents both connection methods but does not establish a universal streaming resolution, frame rate, latency, or reliability result. Those outcomes should not be assumed from the connection type alone.

Use an iPhone or iPad with OBS on another setup

If you are using OBS on Windows or Linux—or need a route that works with an iPad—OBS’s Smartphone Camera Guide lists third-party options. The phone or tablet’s camera feed can be added to OBS as a video capture source or, for VDO.Ninja, through an OBS Browser Source.

  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Fix common Continuity Camera problems

  • The iPhone does not appear in the camera list: Check that both devices meet the requirements, use the same Apple Account, have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, and are nearby. Confirm Continuity Camera is enabled, then open the app’s camera menu and select the iPhone.
  • USB does not connect: Accept the trust or allow prompt if it appears. Disconnect and reconnect the cable, and check that it fits both devices’ ports.
  • The phone was restarted and is not connecting: Unlock it once after restarting, then lock and mount it again. Apple also recommends updating iOS, macOS, and the video app.
  • The camera session pauses during a stream: A phone call can interrupt the camera session. End the call, lock and mount the phone, then reselect or restart the camera in the streaming app as needed.
  • The image is blocked or framing is unstable: Check that the rear lens is not covered and the mount does not wobble. Landscape is Apple’s recommended orientation for automatic selection.
  • Wireless use affects cellular data: Apple says the iPhone may disconnect from Wi-Fi and use cellular data for background networking during wireless Continuity Camera use. Plug it in or turn off cellular data to prevent that behavior.

Keep the livestream running without leaving a computer on

Continuity Camera is for using a phone as a live camera input. If your goal is instead to keep prerecorded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube livestream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Its cloud playback means your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply

Using an iPhone as a webcam does not change the rights or channel policies that apply to the stream. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content rules before streaming material made by someone else. A webcam workflow is not permission to rebroadcast copyrighted footage.
