Two-step verification protects the Google Account you use to manage your YouTube channel; it does not change how an encoder connects. Sign in to YouTube Studio, copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room, then put the URL in the encoder’s server or RTMP field and the key in its stream-key field. Do not enter your Google password or authenticator code into the encoder’s stream-key field.
How to use your YouTube stream key with 2-step verification
Complete Google’s second-step sign-in challenge when you access your account or are asked to re-authenticate. Once you have access to YouTube Studio, the encoder uses the stream URL and key—not your Google sign-in credentials or verification code.
- Confirm the channel is ready. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enable live streaming if it is not already enabled; first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup instructions.
- Sign in to the Google Account that manages the channel. Enter your password and complete the prompted second step or passkey challenge. Keep a recovery method available, and never share verification codes.
- Open the stream settings. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live → Stream. Create a stream or select an existing one. Live Control Room displays the stream URL and key; previously used settings may load the prior key.
- Enter the connection details in the encoder. If the encoder offers YouTube as a destination, select it and follow its connection flow. Otherwise, copy YouTube’s stream URL into the encoder’s server/RTMP field and the stream key into its Stream Key field. Keep the two values in their respective fields.
- Preview and test. Check the preview in Live Control Room, verify audio and video, and monitor the feed once live. Make sure your outbound connection has enough capacity for the selected bitrate; YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth available rather than using all of it. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bandwidth guidance.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room’s Stream tab and replace the old value in the encoder.
Where to enter your YouTube stream key
Enter it in the encoder’s field labelled Stream Key, Stream key, or a similar name. Put YouTube’s separate stream URL in the encoder’s server, server URL, or RTMP URL field. In OBS, these fields are in the stream settings; the authenticator code is not part of this configuration.
YouTube describes stream keys as password-like credentials: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Use the key only in the encoder or service you intend to connect to your channel. For details on managing settings and replacing a key, see YouTube’s stream-settings help.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Does my authenticator code go in OBS?
No. An authenticator code is a second step for signing in to your Google Account. OBS, or another encoder, sends the configured video feed using YouTube’s stream URL and key. Never paste your Google password or two-step verification code into the encoder’s stream-key field.
If a third-party app asks you to sign in to Google, prefer its Sign in with Google option when available. Google says app passwords are not recommended and are unnecessary for most apps; they are a fallback for apps that cannot use the standard sign-in method. An app password is not a stream key.

Recover access if you cannot get into YouTube Studio
Complete the sign-in challenge using a method configured for your account. Depending on what you set up and what Google offers for that sign-in, recovery may be possible through a prompt on another signed-in device, a passkey, a security key, an authenticator code, or a backup code. Set up and retain recovery methods before a live event; the available challenge can vary by account. Google explains two-step verification and ways to sign in.
Do not share a verification code with anyone. If you cannot complete the challenge, use Google’s account-recovery process rather than entering a code or password into an encoder.

Why you may not be able to go live after verifying your YouTube account
Verifying a channel and enabling live streaming are distinct readiness checks. Confirm that live streaming is enabled and that the channel has no live-streaming restriction within the previous 90 days. If this is the first time live streaming has been enabled, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. If those conditions are met but the encoder still cannot connect, check the URL and key separately in their correct fields.
How to reset a YouTube stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live → Stream.
- In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab and reset the key using the available stream settings.
- Replace the old key in the encoder with the new one. Check that the stream URL remains in the server/RTMP field and the new key is in the Stream Key field.
- Test the connection and confirm the preview appears before relying on it for an event.
Reset the key if it may have been exposed; anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to the associated destination. For account and key security details, consult YouTube’s stream-settings guidance.

Troubleshooting
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot open Studio | The Google Account sign-in challenge is incomplete. | Finish the offered second step or use a configured recovery method, such as another signed-in device, passkey, security key, or backup code. |
| The channel cannot start its first live stream | Live streaming may not be enabled yet, or first-time activation may still be processing. | Verify the channel, enable live streaming, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement. |
| The encoder cannot connect | The server URL or stream key may be missing, mistyped, in the wrong field, or outdated. | Copy both values again from Live Control Room and check their respective fields. If the key may be compromised, reset it and update the encoder. |
| The stream is unstable or drops frames | The connection may not have enough upload capacity for the selected bitrate. | Test before the event, leave upload headroom, preview the stream, and monitor audio and video while live. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded video playing on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; each slot streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
