You can livestream on YouTube directly from a computer’s webcam, without installing encoder software: in YouTube, select Create → Go Live → Webcam, choose your camera and microphone, check the preview, then start the stream. Before planning the broadcast, confirm that your channel meets YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements and test your audio, framing, and upload connection.

Before you start: check eligibility and equipment

YouTube’s direct webcam workflow is designed for a straightforward broadcast from a computer. You need a YouTube channel enabled for live streaming, a computer with a webcam and microphone, and a supported browser. YouTube’s current help pages say the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before scheduling an event, since platform rules can change.

YouTube’s webcam instructions list Chrome 60+ and Firefox 53+ as supported browsers. These are the versions stated in YouTube Help; confirm current compatibility if you encounter a browser error. A built-in laptop webcam may be enough to begin. You only need to consider a separate USB webcam if your computer has no camera or its image does not meet your needs.

Start a YouTube livestream from your webcam

  1. Open YouTube in a supported browser and sign in. Confirm that you are using the channel you intend to stream from.
  2. Go to Create → Go Live → Webcam. This opens YouTube’s direct webcam setup rather than an encoder workflow.
  3. Enter the stream details. Add a title and description, choose the privacy setting, and set scheduling or other advanced options if needed.
  4. Continue to the camera preview. Select the intended webcam and microphone from the available devices. Check that the correct camera is showing and that the microphone receives sound.
  5. Check the shot and audio. Adjust your position and framing, listen for clear audio, and make sure the room and background are appropriate for the broadcast.
  6. Start the stream. Watch the preview and stream health while live, and keep an eye on sound and video quality.

YouTube describes the webcam option as “an easy way to go live using your computer, without the need for live streaming encoding software.” See the full Create a live stream via webcam instructions for the current setup flow.

Choose webcam streaming or an encoder

Use the direct webcam workflow when a single camera-and-microphone broadcast is all you need. An encoder is the better fit when your production needs overlays, gameplay, several sources, or connected production hardware. YouTube describes encoder setups that can include multiple microphones, cameras, mixers, and hardware encoders; these are options, not requirements for a basic livestream.

Workflow Best suited to Setup and control
YouTube Webcam A straightforward broadcast from a computer’s camera and microphone Select devices and start from YouTube; no streaming encoder software is needed
Encoder Overlays, gameplay, multiple video or audio sources, or more involved production hardware Requires configuring an encoder; provides controls such as resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

YouTube says beginners can start with the equipment they already have, including a laptop and webcam. Better equipment can improve quality, but do not buy a camera or microphone until you know what your current setup cannot do.

Prepare for a stable, watchable stream

Test before the broadcast

Run a test stream before an important event. Include speaking and movement similar to the real broadcast, check the preview, and listen for problems. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health and audio and video quality. A quiet test at a different time of day may not reveal the effect of your usual network traffic, so test under conditions as close to the event as possible.

Check upload bandwidth

For a live stream, upload capacity matters—not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate; other devices sharing the network can reduce the bandwidth available to your broadcast. If the stream health indicator reports connection or quality trouble, reduce demands on the connection or choose a quality your computer and network can sustain. YouTube’s streaming tips cover testing, bandwidth, and monitoring.

Encoder bitrate guidance is not a webcam setting

The bitrate figures below apply to encoder ingestion, not as mandatory settings for the direct YouTube webcam flow. For 1080p at 30 fps, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists recommended ranges of 5–14 Mbps for H.264 and 4–10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. Recommended values change with resolution, frame rate, and codec, and they do not guarantee that a particular camera, computer, or connection can produce a stable stream. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the full table.

Troubleshoot common webcam-stream problems

  • The webcam option or camera is unavailable: Confirm that you selected Go Live → Webcam, that the browser is supported, and that the intended camera is available to the computer. Recheck the device selection in YouTube’s preview.
  • The wrong microphone is selected or audio is missing: Choose the intended microphone in the preview step and test it before starting. Check the computer’s input device and listen for clear sound.
  • The image or audio breaks up while live: Check YouTube’s stream health, available upload bandwidth, and whether other devices are using the connection. Reduce the demands on the connection or use a more reliable network if possible.
  • The stream looks different from the test: Recheck camera framing, microphone choice, movement, and network conditions. Test again with conditions closer to those expected during the event.
  • You cannot start a live broadcast: Verify channel eligibility and any live-streaming restrictions before troubleshooting the camera itself.
