Choose a UPS based on the measured power draw of your PC while it is streaming, plus any modem, router, or other equipment that must stay on—not on the fact that the stream runs 24/7. Check both the UPS’s watt and VA limits, then use its runtime chart for your actual load. A UPS can ride through brief power interruptions or give the PC time to shut down cleanly; it cannot guarantee a live stream through a prolonged outage, internet failure, or PC fault.

What size UPS do I need for my PC?

There is no reliable one-size-fits-all UPS size for a streaming PC. The right capacity depends on the PC’s actual draw while encoding, the networking equipment you want backed up, and how long you expect the UPS to run them. CPU and graphics-card ratings alone do not tell you the complete system’s wall draw.

  1. Measure the streaming load. Measure the PC at the wall while it is running the lofi stream and encoder in their normal configuration, using a suitable power meter or other trustworthy wall-power measurement. Include a monitor, modem/router, external storage, or other device only if it needs battery power during an outage.
  2. Add the loads you intend to back up. Use the combined draw of the equipment that will be plugged into battery-backed outlets. A powered modem and router matter if the stream depends on them, but keeping them on does not protect against an ISP outage.
  3. Check both UPS output ratings. The total must stay within the UPS’s watt limit and its VA limit. APC’s buying guide recommends output watt capacity generally 20–25% above the connected equipment’s draw; this is manufacturer guidance, not a replacement for checking the exact model’s specifications or applicable local electrical requirements. See APC’s UPS buying guide.
  4. Set a runtime goal. Decide whether you need only to ride through short disturbances or to keep the PC online briefly before an orderly shutdown. Select a UPS whose model-specific runtime chart covers your measured load and target duration. VA capacity alone does not predict runtime.

Because the PC, PSU, network gear, region, and desired outage duration all affect the choice, an exact VA/W recommendation or runtime cannot be given without those details. When comparing a UPS battery backup for a PC, compare its ratings and runtime at your measured load rather than buying by a headline VA figure.

How long will a UPS run my computer?

Use the runtime chart for the exact UPS model at the combined load you plan to connect. More equipment on battery power means less runtime, and battery condition also affects the result. APC specifically cautions that runtime falls as more equipment is plugged into the UPS; its buying guide explains why battery outlets should be reserved for critical equipment.

Do not assume that a desktop UPS will sustain a continuous broadcast through a long outage. If uninterrupted viewing through extended blackouts is essential, a UPS alone is not a guarantee: its battery is finite, and the stream also depends on network service and functioning streaming software.

Which equipment should go on battery-backed outlets?

  • Prioritize the PC running the stream and encoder.
  • Back up the modem and router if they need to remain powered for the PC to reach YouTube. This preserves local power to those devices, not the ISP’s service.
  • Include a monitor only if needed. It is useful during an outage if someone must interact with the PC; otherwise, it may consume runtime without helping the stream stay connected.
  • Move noncritical devices to surge-only outlets if the UPS provides them. Do not put high-draw equipment such as a heater or laser printer on the battery load unless the UPS documentation confirms it is suitable and within capacity.

Follow the UPS manual for outlet limits, grounding, ventilation, placement, and initial charging. Check the battery-backed outlet count and local plug and voltage compatibility before purchase.

What UPS features matter for a streaming PC?

  • Watt and VA capacity: both must accommodate the connected load.
  • Runtime at your measured load: compare the manufacturer’s runtime chart for the exact model.
  • Output waveform and PSU compatibility: APC describes pure sine-wave output as offering the highest degree of compatibility for active-PFC servers and sensitive electronics. Check your PSU and UPS documentation rather than assuming every combination is suitable.
  • Battery-backed outlet layout: confirm that the PC and required networking equipment can be connected to battery outlets, with noncritical devices on surge-only outlets where available.
  • Monitoring and shutdown support: check whether the UPS has USB or network monitoring, whether its manufacturer’s software supports your operating system, and whether it can trigger an orderly shutdown.
  • Battery replacement and service: check whether the battery is user-replaceable, which cartridge fits the exact model, and what warranty and local support apply.
  • Practical fit: consider noise, ventilation, placement, and the plug and voltage used in your region.

How to connect and configure the UPS

  1. List and measure your loads. Record the PC’s draw while encoding, then decide whether the modem/router, monitor, and storage need backup.
  2. Choose the interruption goal. Set a realistic duration for ride-through or graceful shutdown, then verify that the selected model’s runtime curve supports it at your total load.
  3. Check capacity and connections. Verify watt and VA limits, battery-backed outlet count, plug type, waveform compatibility, and monitoring software support for your computer’s operating system.
  4. Connect only essential equipment to battery outlets. Connect the PC and, if needed, modem/router. Add a monitor or other equipment only when the remaining runtime is sufficient. Follow the UPS manual for first charge and safe placement.
  5. Configure shutdown behavior. Install the UPS maker’s supported management software and set a low-battery or runtime-triggered graceful shutdown. Allow enough time for the operating system and stream software to close. Decide how you will restart the stream after power returns; exact menus and restart behavior vary by UPS model, operating system, and streaming software.
  6. Test the whole setup safely. During stable conditions, save work and perform a brief controlled interruption according to the UPS manual. Check that the PC and modem/router stay powered, that encoder reconnection behavior is understood, that alerts work, and that shutdown happens before battery exhaustion. Do not repeatedly deep-discharge the battery as a test.
  7. Maintain the battery. Keep vents clear, observe the maker’s operating conditions, and watch self-test and battery alerts. Check runtime estimates periodically and order only the replacement cartridge specified for your exact UPS model. APC says most of its VRLA UPS batteries have an expected life of three to five years, depending on temperature, discharge history, and load; the figure is specific to APC’s batteries, not a universal replacement interval. APC also advises against frequent runtime calibration, recommending one or two per year at most if calibration is necessary. See its battery-life guidance and battery selector.

Will a UPS keep my YouTube stream live during a power outage?

It can keep powered equipment running for a limited time, if the UPS has enough capacity and the outage is within its runtime. It cannot guarantee that YouTube stays connected. A network disruption can break a stream even when the PC remains on, and powering a modem/router does not keep an ISP connection working through an ISP-side failure.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. That helps provide network margin; it does not protect against a complete internet outage. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bandwidth guidance.

Common UPS and stream problems

  • The UPS overload alarm sounds or it shuts off: the connected load may exceed its watt or VA rating. Recheck the measured combined load and move noncritical equipment off battery outlets; confirm limits in the manual.
  • Runtime is much shorter than expected: compare the load with the exact model’s runtime chart, check whether extra devices are on battery outlets, and review battery condition and alerts.
  • The PC stays on but the stream drops: the network may have failed, the encoder may not reconnect, or YouTube may have lost the connection. Check stream health and rehearse encoder reconnect behavior; a UPS does not fix an ISP outage.
  • The UPS does not shut down the PC cleanly: verify USB/network communication, software and operating-system compatibility, and the configured shutdown threshold. Leave enough runtime for the PC to close programs before battery exhaustion.
  • The battery warning appears: check the model’s self-test and battery instructions, and use only the replacement cartridge specified for that UPS. Battery life varies with operating conditions.
