You can use a Raspberry Pi to play a gaming VOD repeatedly and send it to YouTube Live, but the Pi must both play the file and encode a live stream—and those are separate jobs. The dependable approach is to confirm your channel is eligible to stream, choose a Pi and software that can encode your target resolution and frame rate, send the output to YouTube over RTMPS, then test playback and stream health before making it public. No single Pi model or software recipe is validated for every setup, so test the exact configuration you plan to run.
What the Raspberry Pi has to do
A looping live stream has three parts: a local video file, software that plays it repeatedly, and an encoder that packages the playback as a live video stream for YouTube. The encoder then sends that stream over the network using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio.
Playing a file is not the same as encoding it. A board may be able to decode a video format for playback without being able to encode that video at the same resolution and frame rate in real time. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations describe what to send to YouTube; they do not guarantee a Raspberry Pi can produce it.
Check channel eligibility and video rights first
Confirm live streaming is enabled
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions within the past 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility before preparing a scheduled run in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Clear the gameplay and everything in the recording
Use a VOD you created or have permission to livestream. Check the game publisher’s terms as well as the rights to music, overlays, cutscenes, and other material in the recording. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; it may replace the output with a placeholder or interrupt or terminate the stream if the material remains. Licensed content may require the rights owner to allowlist your channel in Content ID. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
Do not assume a loop is eligible for monetization
Permission to stream a recording and eligibility to monetize it are separate questions. YouTube says gameplay monetization depends on the publisher’s commercial-use rights; commentary tied to the action that adds instructional or educational value may help, while extended footage that simply shows gameplay may not be accepted. Its channel monetization rules also address repetitive or interchangeable content with little viewer value. A loop is not automatically prohibited, but looping footage alone does not establish monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s game and software monetization guidance and channel monetization policies. If the VOD belongs to someone else, reused-content review is another distinct issue: copyright permission does not by itself establish that a channel adds enough original value to qualify.

Choose a Pi and an encoding target
Match the encoding path to the board
Raspberry Pi capability depends on the model and software path. Raspberry Pi 5 has a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder, but decoding support is not proof of equivalent hardware encoding capacity. Raspberry Pi’s published H.264 comparison describes software encoding with libx264 on Pi 5 and a hardware encoding configuration on Pi 4; it does not validate every resolution, frame rate, or workload for your particular system. Start with a target your chosen board and encoder can sustain. Higher resolution and frame rate increase encoding demands and the upload bandwidth required. Do not select a target based on a decoder specification alone.

Use YouTube’s settings as the output target
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval—never more than four seconds. For H.264, the current recommended bitrates include 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube service recommendations, not evidence that a Pi can encode those settings smoothly. Consult the current YouTube live encoder settings and select only a protocol and codec supported by the software you choose.
Test using the VOD’s real motion and audio. A mostly static menu can understate the load of fast gameplay, effects, and continuous sound.

Prepare YouTube Live and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream and choose the ingestion protocol and stream settings for the encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the playback/encoder software using its RTMPS option if supported. YouTube’s stream settings guidance describes the stream URL and key workflow.
- Protect the key like a password. Anyone who gets it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not publish it, put it in a public script, or show it in a screen recording. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Choose compatible playback and encoding software. It must be able to repeat your local VOD and encode the result using settings your Pi can sustain. Software compatibility and the exact loop command depend on the installed Raspberry Pi OS, board, and application; verify those details for your own setup rather than relying on a universal command.
- Set the output deliberately. Configure the chosen resolution and frame rate, a supported codec, CBR where available, and a two-second keyframe interval that never exceeds four seconds. Set bitrate according to YouTube’s guidance for the output mode, then verify the Pi can encode it without dropped frames or overheating.
- Start with a controlled test. Use an unlisted or private stream where suitable. Preview in Live Control Room, check video, sound, and the loop transition, and confirm the stream appears on the intended channel or watch page before announcing a public run.
Test the stream and plan for failure
Watch the Live Control Room preview and health indicators while representative gameplay plays. Check for dropped frames, audio problems, visible stutter, and whether the loop restarts cleanly. YouTube recommends testing with comparable movement and audio and monitoring stream quality rather than assuming that a successful connection means the output is healthy.
A continuous run also depends on power, network access, storage, and the playback/encoder processes staying available. Plan how you would notice and recover from a power loss, network interruption, full or inaccessible storage, or crashed process. The behavior of a particular Pi and software combination must be tested; do not assume automatic restart or unattended reliability without verifying it.

Troubleshooting common problems
- YouTube does not receive a stream: Check that the channel is eligible, the stream is started in the Live Control Room, and the encoder has the correct stream URL and current key. If the key may have been exposed or changed, copy the active key again from Studio.
- The preview connects but stutters or drops frames: Lower resolution or frame rate, then retest. Check encoder load and available upload bandwidth; a YouTube bitrate recommendation does not certify the Pi’s encoding performance or your connection.
- The stream looks or sounds wrong: Verify the output codec and video mode in the encoder, then test with the same type of movement and audio as the VOD. Review the Live Control Room preview and health panel while the test is running.
- The loop stops or does not restart cleanly: Check that the playback software is set to repeat the local file and that the file remains accessible. Test the transition between the end and beginning before a long run; behavior varies by software.
- The stream is interrupted or replaced: Check YouTube’s live copyright notifications and confirm that the recording’s gameplay, music, and other third-party material are cleared for livestream use. A license may need the rights holder to allowlist your channel in Content ID.
- The stream runs, but monetization is unavailable: Review publisher commercial-use permissions, YouTube’s game-content guidance, and channel-level rules on repetitive or reused content. A copyright license alone does not settle monetization eligibility.
