To use a compatible GoPro as a webcam for YouTube Live, connect it to your computer with USB-C, complete GoPro’s webcam setup for both the camera and computer, then select it in YouTube’s webcam livestream flow. You do not need a capture card for this basic USB setup. The exact app and model support depends on your camera and operating system.
Before you start: check your GoPro and computer
Identify your GoPro model and computer operating system before installing software. GoPro’s HERO10 Black manual documents webcam mode and a USB-C connection. GoPro’s Mac App Store listing says its webcam app supports HERO8 Black and newer, including HERO8, HERO9, HERO10, HERO11 and HERO12 Black, but excludes HERO11 Mini and MAX. That is macOS listing information, not a guarantee of support on Windows or every other platform. Check GoPro’s current webcam instructions and the requirements for your particular computer and camera.
GoPro’s HERO10 manual says the camera is in webcam mode by default and instructs you to connect it with the included USB-C cable. It also makes clear that the camera and computer both need to be set up before going live. If the included cable is missing or faulty, a compatible replacement data cable may be needed; a separate cable is not an inherent extra purchase for the documented setup.
For model-specific guidance, see the GoPro HERO10 Black User Manual and GoPro’s GoPro Webcam app listing for macOS. The HERO10 manual points users to GoPro’s webcam setup page for the step-by-step computer setup.

Set up the GoPro webcam connection
- Install or open GoPro’s webcam software and instructions for your operating system. Follow GoPro’s current setup directions for your exact camera and computer. The available Mac App Store listing provides macOS compatibility information; do not assume it establishes Windows support.
- Connect the camera to the computer with USB-C. The HERO10 manual specifies the included USB-C cable.
- Complete setup on both devices. Confirm that GoPro webcam mode is active and that the computer recognizes the camera as a video device. GoPro’s manual states: “Both your GoPro and computer must be set up for webcam mode before you go live.”
- Position and frame the camera. Check that the lens is aimed correctly and that the image is focused and suitably exposed before opening the livestream.
GoPro also documents starting a live stream through its Quik app. That is a different workflow from using the GoPro as a webcam selected by a computer browser.
Go live through YouTube’s webcam workflow
YouTube’s webcam method runs in a supported browser and does not require you to configure a separate encoder. YouTube’s help page lists Chrome 60+ and Firefox 53+ as compatible browsers; check the current YouTube guidance if you use another browser.
- Confirm channel eligibility. Your channel must be verified and must not have had livestreaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. The account holder must be at least 16 to livestream. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Open YouTube Studio’s live workflow. Sign in, click Create, choose Go Live, then select Webcam.
- Enter the stream details. Add a title and description and set the privacy option appropriate to your event.
- Select the devices. Choose the GoPro in the camera selector and choose the microphone you intend to use. Do not assume the camera selection also selects the desired audio source.
- Review the preview, then click Go Live. Confirm the picture and audio in YouTube before starting the broadcast.

Rehearse and check bandwidth before an event
YouTube recommends testing before a livestream and monitoring both audio and video quality. Its streaming tips advise leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream bitrate. For example, if your stream uses 5 Mbps, the connection should have at least 6 Mbps available for the stream plus that recommended headroom; other household or office traffic can affect what is actually available. The 20% figure is YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable.
- Check the framing and image in the YouTube preview.
- Confirm the intended microphone is selected and listen for clear audio.
- Check exposure and focus under the lighting at the actual event location.
- Where appropriate, rehearse with a private or unlisted test before switching to the intended privacy setting.
YouTube’s recommendations are in its Streaming tips.
USB webcam mode versus an encoder setup
| Workflow | What it involves | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| USB webcam mode | Connect the compatible GoPro to the computer via USB-C and complete GoPro webcam setup. | A direct browser-based setup when you want to select the GoPro as the webcam in YouTube. The HERO10 manual documents this route. |
| Encoder or capture workflow | Feed external camera or video hardware into streaming software or a hardware encoder, then configure the broadcast there. | A more involved production using external audio/video hardware or additional production controls. YouTube describes encoder workflows for external hardware and advanced productions. |
YouTube presents encoders as an option for external hardware and advanced productions in Get started with live streaming. A capture card is not required for the USB webcam workflow. Whether a particular GoPro supports an HDMI-based setup, and which accessories it needs, must be checked for that exact model; the sources here do not establish a universal GoPro HDMI configuration or that HDMI necessarily improves image quality. GoPro’s Master the Modes: How to Live Stream discusses a separate live-streaming route.

Common problems and fixes
The GoPro does not appear in YouTube’s camera selector
- Confirm the camera and computer webcam setup is complete for your model and operating system.
- Check that the USB-C connection is secure and that the cable supports data; replace it only if the supplied cable is unavailable or defective.
- Close and reopen the browser after setup, then check the camera selector again.
- Verify that the browser has permission to access the camera and that another application is not occupying it.
YouTube shows the wrong camera or microphone
Use the separate camera and microphone selectors in the webcam workflow. Select the GoPro for video and the intended microphone for audio, then confirm both in the preview before going live.
The picture or audio is unreliable
Rehearse before the event, inspect focus, exposure and framing, and listen to the selected microphone. Check that upload capacity leaves YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom over the stream bitrate, and reduce competing network use if the available bandwidth fluctuates.

The channel cannot start a livestream
