A cloud VM can keep encoder software online and send prerecorded podcast material to YouTube Live overnight—but it does not guarantee YouTube will preserve the stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Plan an overnight session below that threshold and keep an independent recording if the archive matters.
What the cloud VM does—and what it does not
A virtual machine (VM) is a rented computer in a cloud provider’s data center. You can run encoder software on it and use that encoder to send prerecorded podcast episodes or other material to YouTube Live. YouTube receives the stream; the VM is simply the always-on host for the encoder.
That distinction matters for archiving: leaving the VM running does not ensure YouTube saves the broadcast. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. The Help page does not state a publication year for this guidance. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
Before you start
- Live streaming enabled: Your YouTube channel must be eligible and have live streaming enabled. Follow the current prompts in YouTube Studio if setup or verification is required.
- Rights cleared: Use only podcast recordings and other material you are authorized to rebroadcast. This includes music, clips, guest contributions and other third-party content.
- An archive plan: Schedule a stream shorter than 12 hours and make a separate recording if you need a dependable copy.
- A VM and encoder: You will need a cloud VM and encoder software that can send a live feed to YouTube. The exact VM size, operating system, installation steps and cost depend on the cloud provider and encoder; those specifics are not established here.
Set up the overnight stream
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or schedule one for the intended overnight window. Set the planned start and end time so the broadcast stays below YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold.
- Get the YouTube ingest details. Open the stream’s encoder or stream settings in YouTube Studio and copy the server URL and stream key provided for that stream.
- Configure the encoder on the VM. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder. Choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it: YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Follow the encoder and cloud provider’s current instructions for installing software and keeping it running; no provider-specific commands or VM specification are established here. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential that authorizes an encoder feed. Do not publish it or expose it in a public script, log or screenshot. If you believe it has been compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
- Check the preview, then start transmission. Send the encoder feed and confirm that the expected video and audio appear in YouTube Studio’s preview before the scheduled broadcast goes live.
- Monitor stream health and the recording. Check YouTube Studio’s stream health during the session. If you are recording locally, confirm that the archive file is being written and its size is growing. YouTube Help recommends checking the integrity of local archive files and verifying that their file size is growing. See YouTube’s live-stream tips.
Protect the podcast archive
Keep the broadcast under 12 hours
YouTube’s guidance is that streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A session shorter than 12 hours reduces the risk of relying on a stream that YouTube may not save. Do not treat this threshold as a guarantee that every shorter broadcast will be archived.

Two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑A ports (up to 10Gbps – 21x faster than USB 2.0) make data transfers and device expansion a breeze.
- 【USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C: 10Gbps & Versatile Connectivity】The USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C port on the KAMRUI P2 small pc supports 10Gbps data transfer speeds and can also output DisplayPort 1.4 video. Together with Gigabit LAN, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth, you get a fast, flexible, and productive connected environment – wired or wireless.
Keep an independent recording
If preserving the episode is important, keep a separate recording rather than depending only on YouTube’s archive. Monitor the local file while it is being created and verify it afterward. The VM’s role as an always-on encoder host is separate from whether YouTube captures or retains the stream.
Clear rights before rebroadcasting
YouTube’s live-stream terms make the provider responsible for having the rights needed to use live content on Google services, including music licensing rights and other necessary permissions. The terms also require live content to comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. Check that your podcast archive is cleared for this use, especially if it contains music, clips, guest material or other content you do not own. Read the YouTube Terms of Service and Community Guidelines.

Cloud VM or hosted streaming service?
A VM gives you control over the encoder and its restart configuration, but you are responsible for setup and monitoring. Its actual cost depends on the provider, region, VM choice and outbound data charges. A hosted service can reduce the amount of infrastructure you manage, but compare current features, terms and costs before choosing one.
| Option | What is established | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with a free first day and no card required. | Confirm that an uploaded-video looping workflow suits your podcast and review current plan terms. |
| Self-managed cloud VM | You host encoder software on a VM and send its feed to YouTube Live. | Provider-specific compute and outbound transfer charges, setup effort, monitoring, and how you will restart or reconnect the encoder. |
| Other hosted services | YouTube’s encoder documentation names Gyre and Upstream as cloud services for scheduled or continuous prerecorded streams. | The reference is not an endorsement or confirmation of their current price, features, reliability or terms. |
For a self-managed VM, estimate charges using the provider’s current pricing for your chosen region and expected outbound stream data; no specific VM size or cost is established here. YouTube’s reference to Gyre and Upstream does not establish their current feature set or pricing.
