Copy the current stream key and matching RTMPS stream URL from YouTube Live Control Room, replace the old publishing destination in the FFmpeg command or service running on your EC2 instance, then verify the preview in YouTube before going live. A stream key is a secret; never publish a real key in a command example, script, screenshot, or log.
Before changing the key
- Make sure you can access the YouTube channel’s Live Control Room and the EC2 instance that runs FFmpeg.
- Identify where the publishing URL is configured: it may be a command, shell script, service unit, or environment-managed configuration.
- Use the stream key and stream URL for the same intended YouTube stream. Resetting a key means the encoder must be updated with the newly generated value.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Only a channel owner or manager can reset a key. Keep it confidential. See YouTube’s instructions for managing live stream settings.
Copy the current YouTube stream URL and key
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open the Stream tab.
- Reset the key only if you need to rotate it. Under Stream key, choose Reset and copy the new key. If you reset it, the old key in FFmpeg will no longer be the key to use.
- Copy the matching stream URL. In Stream settings, find Stream URL. To use the encrypted connection, click the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS URL and copy it. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default; do not assume that is the RTMPS endpoint. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
Keep the URL and key together as a matching pair. Do not copy a key from one stream and combine it with the URL for another.
Replace the FFmpeg publishing destination
FFmpeg publishes using an output URL. A generic pattern is:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/PATH/STREAM_KEY'
This is a pattern, not a usable destination: INPUT, SERVER, PATH, and STREAM_KEY are placeholders. Replace the server and path with the precise RTMPS destination supplied by Live Control Room, and use the matching key according to YouTube’s endpoint format. Do not guess, reuse an undocumented path, or publish the completed command.
- Stop the current FFmpeg process cleanly, or stop the service that manages it, so the old process does not keep trying to publish with the old destination.
- Edit the location where the output URL is actually defined. Update both the endpoint and the key if YouTube supplied a different endpoint or you reset the key.
- Save the change using the access controls appropriate for your server. Treat the updated configuration as a credential: restrict who can read it and avoid pasting it into public repositories, tickets, chat, or screenshots.
- Start FFmpeg or its service again and inspect the connection output for connection or TLS errors. Avoid sharing raw logs without checking that they do not contain the key or other secrets.
FFmpeg’s RTMP protocol family uses the FLV muxer for publishing, and RTMPS availability depends on the installed FFmpeg build. If FFmpeg rejects the RTMPS scheme, check that build and its protocol support rather than silently assuming that every packaged binary supports it. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

Check the feed in YouTube before going live
- After FFmpeg starts, wait for YouTube Live Control Room to receive the stream and show a preview or stream health.
- Check that the expected video is moving and that audio is present and at a usable level. A connection alone does not confirm the program looks or sounds right.
- For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and then select Go live when ready. YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions describe this workflow.
- Keep Live Control Room open during the event and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends testing before a stream.
Encoder settings to check before the event
Changing a key does not by itself change the encoding settings. YouTube’s current guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and CBR bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose a value from YouTube’s current table for the exact configuration rather than treating one bitrate as universal. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance.
YouTube recommends RTMPS as an encrypted extension of RTMP. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when the installed FFmpeg build supports it. An RTMP endpoint may work with some older encoder builds, but it does not provide the RTMPS transport encryption.

Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube rejects the key or receives the wrong stream
- Confirm the key and URL both came from the Live Control Room settings for the intended stream.
- If you reset the key, make sure the FFmpeg configuration was updated with the new one and that the old process was stopped.
FFmpeg reports a TLS or SSL error
- Check that the scheme and host match the RTMPS values copied from Live Control Room, and that the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS.
- YouTube advises trying port 443 if an SSL error persists. Use the endpoint details YouTube provides rather than constructing an address from memory.
FFmpeg times out while connecting
- Recheck the copied endpoint and RTMPS support first.
- Then investigate the EC2 instance’s outbound route, host firewall, and any network egress policy. The fact that the server is in Mumbai does not establish how its network is configured.
- Do not open inbound streaming ports merely to publish from FFmpeg; this publishing connection is outbound from the encoder.
You cannot connect to the EC2 instance
For SSH to a Linux instance, check its status and whether the security group permits inbound SSH from the operator’s IP address. AWS also documents browser-based EC2 Instance Connect and Systems Manager Session Manager as access alternatives. See AWS’s Linux instance connection guidance. This administrative access rule is separate from FFmpeg’s outbound connection to YouTube.
