The mobile app’s “Edit into a Short” tool lets you select up to 60 seconds; YouTube’s general Shorts guidance allows videos up to three minutes, including vertical uploads.
Choose the right workflow

Make a Short from your own video in the YouTube app
- In the YouTube mobile app, open the watch page for a public long-form video you uploaded.
- Tap Remix, then Edit into a Short.
- Select the portion to use, up to 60 seconds, and tap Next.
- Add any available creative touches, such as text or filters, then upload.
YouTube says Shorts made from your videos link back to the original video, giving viewers a way to discover it. This workflow is limited to public long-form videos you uploaded; private or unlisted videos and videos with third-party copyright claims cannot be used. You also cannot add music or other sounds from YouTube’s Audio Library in this own-video workflow. YouTube’s instructions for creating Shorts from your videos.
If “Edit into a Short” is missing
Check YouTube Studio’s Shorts remixing setting and whether sampling is allowed for the video. The video must also meet the eligibility conditions above. YouTube may update app labels and availability, so the option’s presence can vary.
Use YouTube Studio’s Clips and Shorts tool
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Content > Videos.
- Select the video, then choose Clips and Shorts and start creating a Short.
- Choose a portion by selecting transcript text or setting start and end points in the timeline editor.
- Review and adjust the selected section, then create the Short.
Studio may offer AI-powered suggestions and an AI-generated outline. YouTube lists availability for these features in Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and in English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. Remix another creator’s video or Short
- In the YouTube mobile app, open an eligible video or Short.
- Tap Remix and choose an available option, such as Cut, Green Screen, Collab, or Use this sound.
- Follow the in-app controls to select or record your contribution, review it, and publish.
The available options depend on the source and its eligibility. Creators can restrict remixing, and privacy settings or copyright restrictions can make a source unavailable. YouTube attributes remixed audio or video to the original source, but attribution does not itself grant broader rights. Music licensing can limit use or lead to blocks. Copyright when editing outside YouTube
If you make a Short elsewhere using protected material and upload it, the video may receive a Content ID claim or be removed after a valid copyright takedown. YouTube’s remix tools do not make every video available to reuse or eliminate copyright restrictions. Use material you own or have permission to use, and check the terms attached to any licensed audio or footage.

Upload a separately edited vertical video
YouTube’s general guidance says Shorts can be up to three minutes, and vertical videos can be uploaded from a computer or smartphone. This format limit is different from the up-to-60-second selection documented for the mobile app’s “Edit into a Short” tool. For a computer upload, go to Create > Upload videos, select your file, complete the draft details, and publish when ready. YouTube’s Shorts guidance and video upload instructions.
