Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart by identifying where the fault appears: in the encoder or computer, on the connection to the platform’s ingest server, in the platform’s stream configuration, or on viewers’ playback devices and networks. Match timestamped health messages and changing metrics to one of those layers, then test one likely cause at a time. OBS dropped frames, a platform warning, and viewer buffering are related symptoms, but they do not point to the same cause.
First, locate the problem
Record when the problem starts and what changes at that moment: OBS dropped frames, its connection indicator, platform health messages, or viewer reports. A timestamped pattern is more useful than changing several settings at once.
OBS reports dropped frames or a poor connection
When OBS shows increasing dropped frames and a yellow or red connection indicator, investigate the sender-to-ingest path and whether your configured bitrate is sustainable. OBS explains that it drops frames to compensate when the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the bitrate. This points toward delivery from your computer to the ingest server; it does not establish that viewers have a playback problem. See the OBS dropped-frames explanation and OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
The platform reports a stream-health error
If YouTube’s Live Dashboard or Live Control Room displays a timestamped format, codec, frame-rate, bitrate, keyframe, or primary/backup warning, start with the named setting. YouTube’s live streaming error messages and Google’s LiveStream configuration issues group faults across these areas. Read the wording literally before changing anything else.

Viewers report buffering, but your sender looks normal
Check viewer playback separately. People may have different devices, locations, and internet connections, so a stream can arrive normally from the broadcaster while some viewers buffer. Ask whether other streams play and whether the issue affects multiple viewers, devices, or networks. OBS’s Stream Buffering Troubleshooting and Twitch’s Playback Issue Troubleshooting both recommend separating channel-specific problems from playback conditions.
Test a suspected network problem without guessing
OBS’s connection guide suggests trying another ingest server, lowering video bitrate, or testing another service to help isolate a connection issue. It gives 75% of total upload speed as a possible starting point for bitrate, not a guaranteed stable limit. A speed test is only a momentary measurement; the real question is whether the route can sustain the stream consistently.

OBS describes dynamic bitrate as a way to lower bitrate during congestion, while warning that it does not fix the underlying cause and can reduce video quality. Twitch’s Broadcasting Guidelines also identify unstable routes, bitrate beyond the available connection, and router problems as possible causes of broadcast starvation, buffering, or dropped frames. Twitch puts the trade-off plainly: “Remember: it’s always better to have a stable stream than to push for a higher video quality that might cause you to drop frames or test the limits of your internet connection.”
If your setup permits, compare a wired connection with your usual connection as a diagnostic test. A cable is not a universal fix: the problem may be elsewhere along the network path or in the encoder or platform configuration.

Use the health message to check encoder and stream settings
Use the platform’s error text and timestamp to narrow the check. YouTube’s error guidance identifies incorrect stream format—including H.264 video and AAC audio in surfaced guidance—excessive frame rate, keyframes sent too infrequently, and mismatched primary and backup stream bitrates. Check the specific setting named rather than applying a generic bitrate or keyframe recipe.
YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance is the reference for supported configuration. These recommendations and dashboard wording can change, so verify the current guidance when setting up an encoder. YouTube also notes that its 4K / 2160 option does not offer low-latency mode and uses normal latency.

Cloudflare’s live-stream troubleshooting guide describes a keyframe trade-off: a longer interval can require less internet bandwidth and reduce buffering or freezing, but may increase glass-to-glass latency. Do not lengthen the interval blindly; follow the target platform’s current requirements and any health warning.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Balance stability, picture quality, reach, and latency
A higher bitrate or resolution is not automatically better for every audience. Lowering bitrate can stabilize delivery or make playback more practical for viewers with constrained networks and devices, but it can reduce image quality. Platform recommendations still matter even if your computer and connection can send more. Choose settings against four goals:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Stability: Can the path sustain the bitrate consistently, rather than only during a short speed test?
- Visual quality: What resolution, frame rate, and bitrate can you maintain without recurring delivery problems?
- Audience reach: Can viewers on slower networks and less capable devices play the stream?
- Latency: Does the stream need near-real-time interaction, and what do platform modes or keyframe choices mean for delay?
Test before the event and keep monitoring
Before an event, run a test with audio and movement similar to the actual stream. A mostly static scene may not reveal the same problems as fast motion or a more demanding production. Watch the platform’s stream-health indicator and timestamped messages during the test, then keep monitoring during the event. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing with representative audio and movement and checking stream health.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | First area to inspect | Next useful check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS dropped frames rise; connection indicator turns yellow or red | Sender-to-ingest network path or bitrate sustainability | Try another ingest server or a lower bitrate, changing one variable at a time. |
| YouTube reports a format, codec, frame-rate, keyframe, or backup mismatch | Encoder and stream configuration named by the error | Match the timestamped warning to the relevant current YouTube setting. |
| Viewers buffer while OBS delivery looks normal | Viewer playback, device, location, or network | Ask affected viewers to test other streams and compare reports across devices or networks. |
| Symptoms appear only during congestion | Whether the connection can sustain the chosen bitrate | Test a lower bitrate; dynamic bitrate may mitigate congestion but does not repair its root cause. |
| Buffering or freezing coincides with a latency change | Platform-required keyframe interval and latency mode | Check current platform requirements and the exact health warning before adjusting keyframes. |
