The live-action How to Train Your Dragon made its first flight-focused reveal in a Big Game spot aired during the Super Bowl on February 9, 2025: a brief glimpse of Hiccup and Toothless flying together. It was a promotional preview, not the full trailer; Gizmodo’s Germain Lussier reported that the trailer was expected on February 11.
What the Big Game spot showed
Gizmodo described the spot as an introduction to the live-action film’s central characters in the real world, including an early look at Hiccup and Toothless taking to the air. The clip was titled “How To Train Your Dragon | Big Game Spot.” The footage offered a first promotional glimpse of their flight, rather than a full account of the story or a complete trailer. Gizmodo’s February 9, 2025 report covered the spot and its context.
Who is making the live-action film?
Dean DeBlois, who worked on the animated films, wrote and directed the live-action adaptation. Mason Thames plays Hiccup, Nico Parker plays Astrid, and the cast also includes Nick Frost and Gerard Butler, along with Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, Ruth Codd, Peter Serafinowicz and Murray McArthur. Universal’s official film page describes the story as Hiccup befriending Toothless and says the film is inspired by Cressida Cowell’s How to Train Your Dragon book series.
How it relates to the animated original
The new film is a live-action adaptation; the 2010 animated How to Train Your Dragon is a separate production with its own cast and credits. DreamWorks’ official page for the 2010 film credits DeBlois as director. His return as writer-director gives the adaptation a direct creative connection to the earlier films, but the short spot alone could not answer the promotional question of whether a remake would justify itself or recreate the original’s emotional effect.

Gizmodo’s February 9, 2025 report gave June 13 as the film’s planned opening date at the time and anticipated the full trailer for Tuesday, February 11, 2025. Those were dates in the original promotional announcement, not a current release notice. The Big Game spot is best understood as an early glimpse of the live-action Hiccup and Toothless in flight.
