Its limitation is also its defining choice: it follows the animated original closely, so fans seeking a substantial reinvention may find it more polished replay than fresh interpretation.
What is the 2025 How to Train Your Dragon about?
Universal describes a world where Vikings and dragons have fought for generations. Hiccup, a young Viking, forms an unlikely bond with Toothless, and that friendship challenges the assumptions behind the conflict. Astrid becomes an important companion as the story tests friendship and bravery. The franchise was inspired by Cressida Cowell’s book series.
This is a live-action adaptation of the 2010 animated film, not a new story. Dean DeBlois, who helped shape the franchise, wrote and directed the 2025 version. Mason Thames plays Hiccup, Nico Parker plays Astrid, and Gerard Butler returns as Stoick. Universal’s film page provides the official synopsis and cast information.
What works in the remake?
The friendship still carries the adventure
Hiccup and Toothless remain the film’s emotional center. Their bond gives the fantasy spectacle a clear human stake: the story is not only about dragons and battle, but about trust across a divide. That core is accessible whether a viewer already knows the animated version or is meeting the characters for the first time.

DeBlois preserves continuity
DeBlois’s return as writer-director helps maintain the characters and emotional shape that made the earlier film resonate. Reviewers in Rotten Tomatoes’ first-reviews roundup differed on how much the remake needed to change, but some treated his familiarity with the material as an advantage.
Live action changes the texture
The remake offers a new presentation of Berk, its dragons and the action, with effects and live-action performances supplying scale and physical texture. The roundup records praise for the effects and spectacle; some reviewers also described a more dramatic tone and less humour. Those are critical perspectives rather than a universal response, and the change in presentation is more evident than any major change to the plot.

Where does it fall short?
The close adaptation leaves little room for surprise if you remember the animated original beat by beat. Variety’s Peter Debruge, quoted in the Rotten Tomatoes roundup, wrote: “The script feels almost identical in both versions…Fortunately, How to Train Your Dragon had — and therefore still has — a rock-solid screenplay.” IGN’s Eric Goldman similarly observed: “By sticking to the same plot points and resolutions, the screenplay for this How to Train Your Dragon plays things pretty safe.”
That criticism is about the remake’s ambition, not basic competence. A sturdy story can still work when retold, and the roundup also includes positive responses to its faithfulness and emotional appeal. The trade-off is that familiarity may be a pleasure for one viewer and a constraint for another.

How does the remake compare with the animated original?
| What matters | 2010 animated original | 2025 live-action remake |
|---|---|---|
| Story novelty | The original version of the Hiccup–Toothless adventure. | Retains the original’s main story beats, offering limited novelty for viewers who know it well. |
| Presentation | Animated stylization. | Live-action performances and visual effects give the familiar fantasy a different texture. |
| Familiarity and surprise | Best suited to encountering the story in its original animated form. | Familiarity is part of the appeal; the close fidelity can reduce surprise. |
This comparison concerns the broad adaptation choice, not technical shot-by-shot differences. The available critical commentary supports the remake’s close fidelity and live-action presentation, not a frame-level comparison.
What did critics and audiences make of it?
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus describes the film as “Crafted with loving fidelity to the animated classic by original co-director Dean DeBlois, How to Train Your Dragon doesn’t best the first iteration but still reaches enchanting heights of its own.” That captures the mixed-positive case: affection for the source, craft and spectacle alongside reservations about similarity and necessity. The consensus page can change over time, so this review does not rely on a numeric score.
The film also opened strongly in theaters. The Associated Press reported on June 15, 2025, citing Comscore estimates, that it earned $83.7 million in North America and more than $114.1 million internationally for a $197.8 million global opening weekend. Those are opening-weekend figures, not lifetime totals. The animated franchise’s cumulative global gross of more than $1.6 billion is a separate figure stated by Universal Pictures Home Entertainment in its July 14, 2025 release announcement; it is not the live-action film’s gross. The AP report quotes Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian calling the film “yet another example of a live-action remake really delivering on the promise of the marketing.”
