The 2025 live-action How to Train Your Dragon ranks first among the franchise’s four theatrical films by The Numbers’ reported worldwide box-office totals. Its $639.9 million total is about $25.3 million ahead of the 2014 animated sequel. The ranking below uses one database consistently; Box Office Mojo reports different totals, enough to change the top two positions.
How the four movies rank by worldwide box office
These are unadjusted worldwide theatrical grosses reported by The Numbers, checked October 8, 2026. The two films titled How to Train Your Dragon are identified by year and format to distinguish the original animation from the live-action remake.
| Rank | Film | Worldwide theatrical gross |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | How to Train Your Dragon (2025, live action) | $639,871,422 |
| 2 | How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014, animated) | $614,586,270 |
| 3 | How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019, animated) | $524,342,783 |
| 4 | How to Train Your Dragon (2010, animated) | $494,312,845 |
The Numbers’ franchise table supplies all four figures. They are database-reported grosses, not audited studio statements.
Which How to Train Your Dragon movie made the most money?
By The Numbers’ figures, the 2025 live-action remake made the most at the worldwide box office, with $639,871,422. It leads the 2014 animated How to Train Your Dragon 2 by $25,285,152. The 2014 film ranks second, followed by the 2019 third installment and the 2010 original.

The 2025 film’s launch figure was different from its final total: NBCUniversal announced a $197.6 million worldwide opening weekend on June 16, 2025, including $84.6 million in North America and $113 million internationally. That opening-weekend result is context, not a substitute for the eventual worldwide gross.
Why other box-office rankings may differ
Box Office Mojo reports different worldwide totals for the animated trilogy: $494,878,759 for the 2010 film, $621,537,519 for How to Train Your Dragon 2, and $521,799,505 for The Hidden World. The ordering within the animated trilogy remains the same, but Box Office Mojo’s figure for the 2014 sequel puts it ahead of the 2025 remake’s The Numbers total. Don’t combine figures from the two databases into one ranking.
For the 2025 film, Box Office Mojo’s franchise page includes a domestic lifetime gross; domestic is not worldwide. A domestic total covers a narrower market, so it cannot be compared directly with a worldwide figure. Box Office Mojo’s franchise page and its franchise comparison page provide the alternative dataset.

This is a ranking of reported worldwide theatrical gross, not a ranking by inflation-adjusted earnings, profit, or money retained by the studio. The gross is the reported ticket-sales total; it does not by itself show production and marketing costs, theater shares, or other financial outcomes. The figures are also subject to database updates and may change if records are revised or rereleases add receipts.
The franchise began as an animated trilogy centered on Hiccup, a young Viking who befriends Toothless and works with the dragon to protect their worlds. DreamWorks describes that premise on its official film page. The 2025 entry is a live-action remake; The Numbers lists its U.S. wide release as June 13, 2025, and its video release by Universal Home Entertainment as July 15, 2025, on the film detail page.
