How to Test an OBS Loop Stream Privately Before Making It Public on YouTube

A practical guide to testing an OBS video loop on YouTube without exposing the broadcast publicly.

Set the YouTube stream to Private or Unlisted before you start OBS, then inspect the incoming feed in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Let the video loop at least once, check audio and stream health, and keep the stream non-public until you are ready to broadcast publicly.

Choose Private or Unlisted before connecting OBS

YouTube supports both privacy settings for encoder live streams. Choose Private when access should be limited to you and specifically invited viewers. Choose Unlisted when you want someone with the link to check the stream; anyone who receives that link may share it.

In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live and use the Stream tab for a stream now, or select Manage → Schedule Stream for a scheduled stream. Set visibility before starting the encoder, and verify it explicitly: YouTube’s default is Private for creators aged 13–17 and Public for creators aged 18 or older.

If you have never streamed, YouTube requires a verified channel without live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the planned test.

Set up a looping video in OBS

Loop one video

  1. Open OBS and select the scene you intend to use.
  2. In Sources, select + → Media Source, give it a name, and choose OK.
  3. Browse to the local video file and enable Loop in the Media Source properties. Select OK, then confirm the video appears in the OBS canvas.

OBS Media Source repeats the file after playback completes. If the source does not fit the canvas, adjust its size and position in the scene before you test the YouTube feed.

Loop a playlist

For several files, OBS documents the VLC Video source and its Loop Playlist option. VLC must be installed for that source type to appear in OBS. Add the files to the source playlist, enable the loop option, and check the order and transitions locally before streaming.

Connect OBS to YouTube and inspect the incoming feed

  1. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the stream you selected. In OBS, open Settings → Stream; choose YouTube if available, or enter the server URL and key as directed by the YouTube connection details.
  2. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in screenshots or share it publicly. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement.
  3. Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming video to appear in the Live Control Room preview. A scheduled stream may require you to select Go live in YouTube when you are ready; keep its visibility Private or Unlisted during the test.
  4. Check the YouTube preview, not only OBS’s local preview. The Live Control Room view confirms what is arriving at YouTube, while the OBS preview only shows the local scene.

YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the actual event, checking stream health messages, and verifying accessibility on the channel or watch page and on mobile where appropriate. For a Private stream, make sure the invited viewers can access it; for an Unlisted stream, use the link deliberately and treat it as shareable.

What to verify during the loop test

  • Loop point: Let the video reach the end and confirm it starts again. Watch for a black frame, pause, abrupt cut, or unintended gap.
  • Audio: Listen through the transition, check that the audio remains in sync, and confirm that desktop or microphone audio is not being captured unintentionally.
  • Picture: Check the incoming YouTube preview for the intended resolution, framing, movement, and any visible overlays or accidental content.
  • Delivery: Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages throughout the test. If viewers will use a phone or a particular watch page, check playback there too.
  • Privacy: Confirm the stream is still Private or Unlisted before sharing any viewing link or continuing the test.

A successful test demonstrates that the observed file, scene, audio, encoder settings, and network worked at that time. It does not guarantee that a later public stream will be flawless if the file, settings, connection, or YouTube stream changes.

Check upload capacity and encoder settings

Run an upload speed test and compare sustained upload capacity with the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the combined bitrate; do not plan to use all measured upload capacity for the stream.

Setting Practical guidance
Protocol YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder streaming.
Video codec YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 among its supported encoder video codecs.
Rate control YouTube recommends CBR (constant bitrate).
Keyframe interval YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Bitrate Choose a bitrate appropriate to the target resolution and frame rate, while keeping within sustained upload capacity and the recommended headroom.
Latency Lower latency can increase playback buffering. For a non-interactive loop test, latency is usually less important than stable playback.

End the test and protect any recording

  1. End the broadcast in YouTube’s Live Control Room, then stop streaming in OBS once the event has stopped on YouTube.
  2. Check whether YouTube created an archive and confirm its visibility before sharing or retaining it. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
  3. Before the production broadcast, check the next stream’s privacy setting explicitly. Do not assume that a setting carried over as intended.

Common problems and fixes

  • YouTube shows no incoming preview: Confirm OBS is streaming, the correct stream URL and key are in use, and the selected Studio stream is the one receiving the feed. If the key may be compromised or incorrect, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS.
  • The stream is public when you meant to test privately: Stop and correct the visibility in Studio before resuming. Check it again before starting OBS; adult accounts default to Public.
  • The video does not repeat: Reopen the Media Source properties and verify Loop is enabled. For a multi-file playlist, verify that the VLC Video source is being used and Loop Playlist is enabled.
  • The loop has a gap or abrupt audio: Listen and watch through the file boundary in the YouTube preview. Check the source file and its audio transition; a local OBS preview alone does not verify the delivered feed.
  • Playback buffers or stream health reports trouble: Check sustained upload capacity, lower the bitrate or target resolution/frame rate if needed, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. Monitor the incoming feed again after changing settings.
  • The YouTube Live option is unavailable: Check channel verification and whether the channel has a live-streaming restriction from the past 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
