In OBS, a VLC Video source supports playlists, looping, and shuffle, but OBS does not document whether editing a playlist during playback will switch cleanly. Prepare the change in advance and test it on a private stream before relying on it live.
Where to change the playlist
An encoder-based broadcast has two distinct sides: YouTube receives the outgoing video feed, while the encoder or media source creates that feed. YouTube’s instructions tell creators to enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder to start streaming; they do not document a playlist-replacement control for an already-running broadcast. YouTube Live Control Room settings cover stream configuration and management, not editing an OBS playlist.
So, if OBS is sending a pre-recorded loop, make the content change in OBS or in the media source feeding OBS. Changing a viewer’s own queue only changes what that viewer watches next; it does not change the live broadcast for anyone else. YouTube’s queue instructions describe that personal viewing feature.
Set up a playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC to be installed for the VLC Video source to appear.
- Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that feeds your broadcast.
- Load the media files. Add the videos you want to play to the source’s playlist and arrange them in the intended order.
- Choose playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist if the list should restart after its final item. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want the files played in randomized order.
- Start the broadcast through your encoder. Use the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder as directed by YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
OBS describes its VLC Video source as supporting a playlist of items, unlike a basic Media Source. Its documentation confirms playlist, loop, and shuffle options, but does not specify what happens when you edit the playlist while a file is already playing. OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation was dated January 11, 2022; labels and behavior can vary with the version installed.

Change content while the stream is live
Before changing an active broadcast, prepare the desired playlist or source and verify it outside the public stream. Then test the exact change on a private stream using the same OBS version and media setup. The documentation does not guarantee that editing an active VLC playlist preserves the current item or creates a smooth transition.
During your private test, check whether the current video continues or restarts, whether a black frame or audio gap occurs, whether a scene transition is visible, and whether the playlist resumes in the intended order. If continuity matters, avoid making an untested edit to the source currently on air; prepare and verify the replacement source first.

Common problems and checks
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS and check the source list again.
- The wrong files play: Review the active source’s playlist and file order. Confirm that the scene being sent to YouTube contains that source.
- The playlist does not restart: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source.
- The order changes unexpectedly: Check whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled.
- The audience still sees the old content: Confirm that you changed the source in the active encoder scene, not a different scene or a viewer-side queue.
- A live edit interrupts playback: OBS’s documentation does not promise seamless mid-playback edits. Use the behavior verified in your private test, or prepare a replacement source before switching.
