To switch podcast episodes on a YouTube live stream, create a separate OBS scene for each episode or show segment, assign scene hotkeys for direct switching, or use Studio Mode to preview the next scene before sending it live. Connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and stream key, then rehearse the scene changes and media playback before the broadcast.
Plan scenes around the show
An OBS scene is a saved composition of sources. Make a scene for each segment that needs a meaningfully different layout—for example, Starting Soon, Episode 1, Episode 2, Break, and Closing. The OBS overview uses examples such as Welcome, Desktop, Game, Break, and End; a podcast can use the same principle with episode titles and media. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Add the sources each scene needs
In the Sources dock, add the relevant camera or capture device, microphone or other audio source, episode title text, branding image, browser overlay, or prerecorded media. OBS documents these source types in its Sources Guide. Reuse the same camera and audio layout where appropriate, and change only the title or segment media when the framing stays the same.
For local audio or video clips, use a Media Source. OBS lists supported formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, MP3, AAC, and WAV. In the source properties, enable Restart playback when source becomes active if the clip should begin again whenever that scene becomes active; rehearse the behavior before using it on air. A VLC Video source can play a playlist, but VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Details are in the OBS Media Sources guide.

Switch scenes while live
Direct switching with scene hotkeys
- In OBS, open Settings → Hotkeys.
- Find each target scene’s Switch to a specific Scene action and assign it a distinct shortcut.
- Rehearse the show sequence and confirm each shortcut selects the intended scene.
Scene hotkeys are part of OBS’s documented workflow, so a separate scene controller is not required. Choose shortcuts that are practical for the host or operator; there is no single key combination that should be assumed to be the universal default. See the OBS overview.
Studio Mode for a preview before switching
- Enable Studio Mode in OBS.
- Select the next scene in Preview and check its framing, titles, overlays, and media.
- Click Transition to send that prepared scene to the live output.
Studio Mode keeps the live scene separate from the scene being prepared. OBS provides Cut and Fade transitions from first launch; other transitions and duration controls are available in the Scene Transitions panel, and Quick Transitions can be configured with durations for Studio Mode. Use Cut for an immediate change or Fade for a gradual one, and test the timing against the dialogue and media. The right choice depends on the show’s pace and whether an operator needs a visual check.

Change one source instead of the full layout
If the frame remains the same and only one element needs to appear or disappear, OBS also documents show/hide transitions and hotkeys for source visibility in its DVE tutorial. Separate scenes are usually easier to operate when an episode changes several elements or the overall layout.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream.
- In OBS, select YouTube as the encoder service if available, or enter the YouTube stream URL in the server field.
- Copy the stream key from YouTube’s Live Control Room into OBS’s stream-key field.
- For a scheduled event, start the encoder and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room. Check it, then click Go live.
- To end a scheduled encoder stream, YouTube’s instructions say to click End Stream and stop sending from the encoder. Check the current Live Control Room controls, which may change.
YouTube describes the stream key as a password for the stream: keep it private and reset it in Live Control Room if it is compromised. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions and stream settings guidance.

Rehearse before the episode starts
- Switch through every scene while recording locally or using a private or unlisted test stream. Confirm the intended camera, title, overlay, and episode media appear.
- Check OBS audio meters. If the expected microphone or device is missing, verify it under Settings → Audio.
- Test whether each media clip starts or restarts as intended when its scene becomes active.
- Check OBS output settings and run a short test. The OBS Quick Start Guide recommends testing for a few minutes rather than starting a first stream or recording without a test.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before going live. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing with representative audio and motion, checking that the event is accessible, and monitoring audio and video quality during the stream.
Troubleshoot common scene-switching problems
The wrong scene goes live
With direct hotkeys, a shortcut may be assigned to the wrong scene or may be difficult to trigger reliably. Reopen Settings → Hotkeys, verify each scene assignment, and rehearse the sequence. If the host needs to inspect each layout before it airs, use Studio Mode and trigger Transition only after checking Preview.
A clip does not restart on the next episode
Open that Media Source’s properties and check Restart playback when source becomes active. Test by leaving and re-entering the scene; do not assume the setting produces the desired behavior without rehearsal.

A VLC playlist source is unavailable
Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS. OBS’s media-source guidance specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
YouTube does not show an encoder preview
Verify that OBS is sending to the YouTube stream URL and that the stream key matches the event in Live Control Room. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update OBS. Wait for the preview before using Go live for a scheduled event.

The camera, title, or audio is missing
Inspect the sources in the selected scene and confirm the correct devices are active. Check audio meters and, if needed, the devices under Settings → Audio. Test all scenes with representative motion and sound before the show.
