How to Switch OBS Between Two Pre-Recorded YouTube Playlists Without Ending the Stream

Use two VLC Video sources or separate OBS scenes to switch pre-recorded playlists while your YouTube stream stays active.

Keep OBS streaming and switch the visible content: use a VLC Video source for each playlist, then show the playlist you want and hide the other—or put each playlist in its own scene and switch scenes. Do not click Stop Streaming in OBS or End Stream in YouTube Live Control Room during the handoff.

Choose how to organize the playlists

OBS’s built-in Media Source is for an individual local media file. For a playlist, use a VLC Video source; it supports multiple files in a chosen order and requires VLC media player to be installed. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Setup Best when Things to check
Two VLC Video sources in one scene The playlists share the same overlays and layout, and you want to switch only the media. Set hidden-source behavior deliberately and prevent audio from both sources playing at once.
One scene per playlist Each playlist needs its own layout, or you prefer changing the whole scene at once. Keep transitions and audio behavior consistent; duplicated overlays may need updating in both scenes.

Both methods change what OBS sends without deliberately stopping the streaming output. OBS documents source visibility and scene switching; YouTube describes ending an encoder stream as stopping content from the encoder. This is an inference from those documented controls, not a live-channel test. See the OBS Sources Guide and YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions.

Set up two playlists in OBS

  1. Install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS: use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
  2. Add playlist A. In the scene, use the Sources panel’s add control and choose VLC Video. Add the files for playlist A in the order you want them to play.
  3. Set playback options. Configure Loop Playlist and, if wanted, Shuffle Playlist. Choose the intended behavior when the source is hidden. OBS’s documented default is “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” Select another available behavior if you want the hidden playlist to continue or to resume differently, and test it ahead of time.
  4. Add playlist B. Add a second VLC Video source and its files. If using separate scenes, create a second scene and place playlist B’s source there instead. Match the sources’ size and position so switching does not shift the picture unexpectedly.
  5. Check audio and visibility. Make sure only the intended playlist is audible during a handoff. If both sources share a scene, practice showing one source and hiding the other. For separate scenes, test the scene transition and audio behavior.
  6. Test privately or unlisted. Start a test stream and confirm both playlists play, loop or shuffle as intended, and switch cleanly before relying on the setup for a public broadcast. OBS recommends testing a stream before the real event in its Quick Start Guide.

Switch playlists while the stream is live

  1. Start streaming from OBS as usual and confirm the stream is active.
  2. For two sources in one scene, show playlist B and hide playlist A. For separate scenes, switch to the scene containing playlist B.
  3. When it is time to return, show playlist A and hide playlist B, or switch back to playlist A’s scene.

Hotkeys are optional. OBS supports hotkeys for showing or hiding sources and switching scenes; configure them if useful, then test them before going live. The controls are covered in the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

What not to press during the handoff

Do not click Stop Streaming in OBS or use YouTube Live Control Room’s End Stream action to change playlists. YouTube’s encoder help says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” Switching the visible OBS source or scene is the content handoff; ending the encoder stream is not required.

Troubleshoot a failed or messy switch

  • VLC Video is unavailable or will not load: Install VLC and ensure its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  • The playlist restarts when you switch back: Check the VLC Video source’s Visibility Behaviour. The documented default stops playback while hidden and restarts it when visible. Choose the available behavior that fits your timing and test it.
  • Both playlists’ audio overlaps: Verify which sources are visible and audible at the same time. Hide the outgoing source or adjust the scene arrangement, then test the handoff again.
  • The picture moves or changes size: Match the sources’ dimensions and positioning in the scene, or align the layouts in both scenes.
  • The stream ends instead of switching: Confirm OBS is still streaming and that neither Stop Streaming nor YouTube’s End Stream was activated. Switch only the source visibility or scene.
  • A hotkey does not switch the content: Confirm the hotkey is assigned to the intended source or scene and that the correct OBS scene is active; test without relying on it before a public broadcast.
