To stream a prerecorded video vertically with XSplit Broadcaster, add the local file as a Video File source, set a portrait stage, compose the picture in the preview, then send it through XSplit’s YouTube Live output. You do not need a camera or capture card for a video already saved on your computer. XSplit documented vertical streaming support in Broadcaster version 4.5.2412.0304, released in December 2024; a 9:16 stream may be eligible to appear in the YouTube Shorts feed, but the format alone does not guarantee placement.
Before you start
- Have the video file on the computer running XSplit, and confirm that it plays in your installed version. XSplit lists common formats including MP4 and WEBM, but support can depend on the specific file and software version. See XSplit’s Image, Video, and Audio Source guide.
- Enable live streaming for your YouTube channel before configuring the output. XSplit’s guide says the channel should be verified and free of a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and that first-time approval can take up to 24 hours. These are XSplit’s published guidance, not a guarantee of current YouTube eligibility or approval timing; check the current status in YouTube Studio. See XSplit’s YouTube Live guide.
- Install a Broadcaster version whose YouTube Live output supports vertical streaming. XSplit’s December 2024 release notes identify version 4.5.2412.0304 as adding that support.
- Have access to the YouTube channel that will host the stream. If using a stream key with a custom RTMP output, treat it as a password.
Add the prerecorded video as a source
- Open the scene you want to use in XSplit Broadcaster.
- Select Add Source > Video File, then choose the video on your computer.
- Use the media source’s playback controls to choose how playback should behave for your broadcast. Confirm the source plays as expected before going live.
A camera or capture card is for bringing in a webcam, capture card, or compatible external video device. It is not needed to play a local file as a source. XSplit describes that distinction in its Camera/Capture Card documentation.
Set a portrait stage and compose the frame
- Open the stage controls and set a custom resolution with a portrait aspect ratio. For a vertical layout, use 9:16. The precise pixel dimensions are your choice; XSplit’s documentation supports custom stage resolutions but does not prescribe a single best resolution for every computer or channel.
- Resize, move, or crop the video source to fit the portrait canvas. Inspect the preview carefully. A landscape recording placed on a portrait stage can lose content at the sides if cropped, or show unused space if fitted without cropping.
- Arrange any titles or other sources within the visible portrait area. Check that important text and action are not hidden by the crop or too close to the frame edges.
- Review the stage preview from beginning to end, especially if framing changes during the recording. Streaming and recording resolutions use the stage resolution by default, according to XSplit’s Broadcaster Stage guide.
XSplit’s December 2024 release notes say its YouTube Live output supports 9:16 vertical streaming, intended to let live content appear in the Shorts feed. YouTube determines feed placement; choosing a portrait aspect ratio does not guarantee that your stream will be shown there.
Connect XSplit to YouTube Live
- In XSplit, open Broadcast and set up or select the YouTube Live output.
- Authorize the YouTube account and channel you intend to use when prompted.
- Choose whether to start an immediate broadcast or select a scheduled live event. Follow the output’s setup screens to enter the stream details.
- Review the title, description, tags, category, privacy setting, latency, DVR, backup server, and manual-transition option shown in the output setup. Set each deliberately; the options available can vary with the installed software and YouTube workflow.
- Check that the portrait composition and video playback are correct in XSplit before starting the output.
XSplit documents these output controls in its YouTube Live setup guide. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and interface can change, so use the current YouTube Studio status and prompts as the final authority.

Choose immediate or scheduled streaming
Start an immediate stream
Use the immediate option in the YouTube Live output when you are ready to begin without a previously created event. Confirm the selected channel and privacy setting, then start the broadcast from XSplit and check the live status in YouTube Studio.
Use a scheduled event
- Create the scheduled event in YouTube Studio first.
- In XSplit’s YouTube Live output, select that event from the Live Event list and configure its details.
- Decide whether to enable Manual Transition. XSplit’s scheduled-stream guide says that with Manual Transition enabled, you must also click Go Live in YouTube Studio. If it is disabled, starting the XSplit broadcast starts the event on YouTube according to that guide.
- Check the YouTube Studio preview and status before sharing the event or relying on it to be live.
See XSplit’s scheduled-stream guide for the event workflow. Confirm the transition behavior in your installed version before the scheduled start.

- In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream setup for the event and copy its stream URL and stream key.
- In XSplit, select Broadcast > Set up new output > Custom RTMP.
- Enter the YouTube stream URL and key in the corresponding fields, save the output, and check the connection before going live.
Do not share the key, publish it, or include it in screenshots. Anyone with access to a stream key may be able to broadcast to that event. XSplit’s instructions are in YouTube Live Stream Credentials.

Troubleshooting
The video will not load or play
- Check that the selected file exists locally and plays outside XSplit.
- Try a common supported format such as MP4 or WEBM if the file format may be the issue. XSplit notes that compatibility can vary by file and installed version.
- Remove and add the source again through Add Source > Video File, then verify playback with the source controls.
The stream is not vertical
- Confirm the stage itself is set to a portrait 9:16 resolution, not just that the video is portrait.
- Check the YouTube output and installed Broadcaster version for vertical-streaming support; XSplit documented this feature in version 4.5.2412.0304 in December 2024.
- Inspect the output preview and recompose the source if the video is cropped or letterboxed. Stage resolution and source framing are separate decisions.
The stream does not start on YouTube
- Confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel and check YouTube Studio for any eligibility or restriction notice.
- For a scheduled event, verify that XSplit selected the intended Live Event. If Manual Transition is enabled, complete the separate Go Live action in YouTube Studio.
- For Custom RTMP, recheck the stream URL and key against the current event in YouTube Studio. Never expose the key while troubleshooting.
The scheduled event is waiting rather than live
Check whether Manual Transition is enabled in XSplit. Under the behavior described in XSplit’s guide, that setting requires a separate Go Live action in YouTube Studio; with it disabled, starting the XSplit broadcast starts the event automatically.

Keep the video and channel compliant
Streaming a recording as a live broadcast does not change who owns its content or whether you have permission to use it. Before airing, confirm that you hold the necessary rights for the video, music, images, and other material, and review YouTube’s current policies and account notices. A vertical format or live label is not a substitute for permission or policy compliance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos running on a YouTube channel without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.
