How to Stream to Multiple Platforms at Once

Stream the same live program to multiple platforms using a cloud relay or a locally configured multi-output setup. Here’s how to choose, configure, and test each approach.

To stream the same live program to multiple platforms at once—often called simulstreaming—send one encoder feed through a cloud relay, or configure your own setup to produce multiple outputs. A relay is usually simpler to manage; local multi-output gives you more control but requires more configuration. Before going live, confirm each account is eligible, check platform rules, and test the picture and audio at every destination.

What you need before you start

YouTube’s simulstreaming guidance recommends preparing each destination before configuring the broadcast. YouTube requires a verified channel with live streaming enabled; other services may have their own eligibility rules. Accounts should be active and in good standing.

  • Choose the platforms where you want the program to appear.
  • Confirm that each account can go live and review its current rules.
  • For destinations that require them, locate the stream key and RTMP server URL. Treat stream keys like passwords: do not publish or share them, and replace one if it is exposed.
  • Check that your upload connection can sustain the chosen stream settings and the method you use to distribute the feed.

YouTube says sufficient upload speed is critical, but its guidance does not establish one universal speed target. The capacity you need depends on your settings and setup; avoid relying on a generic figure that may not fit your broadcast.

Choose a distribution method

Decision Cloud relay Local multi-output
How it works Your encoder sends one feed to a relay, which forwards it to selected platforms. Your own setup routes or encodes outputs for each destination.
Configuration Connect your encoder and authorize or connect destination accounts in the relay service. Configure RTMP routing and, depending on the method, FFmpeg or other local output settings.
Trade-off A managed distribution workflow can reduce the number of outputs you configure locally. Destinations, account connections, and plan limits depend on the provider and can change. Offers more direct control, but is more involved and may add local encoding or network demands. The load depends on whether outputs are copied or transcoded.
Good fit Creators who prefer a single encoder output and a managed relay. Technically confident operators who are comfortable configuring and troubleshooting their own routing.

Neither approach is best for every creator. Consider how many destinations you need, whether they require different outputs, your comfort with configuration, and the current limits of any relay service you consider.

Method 1: Use a cloud relay

With a relay, the encoder sends one stream to the relay service; that service distributes it to the destinations you select. Restream’s OBS connection guide describes connecting OBS, linking platform channels, creating a stream, and enabling destinations. Its Twitch and YouTube guide shows the same general workflow for those two services. These are vendor instructions, not an independent performance evaluation.

  1. Connect your destinations. In the relay service, authorize or connect the platform accounts you plan to use. Confirm that each channel is available and that you are permitted to broadcast there.
  2. Create the relay stream. Follow the provider’s current setup flow. It will supply or identify the encoder endpoint and stream key to use for the incoming feed.
  3. Point your encoder at the relay. In OBS or another encoder, enter the relay’s server URL and stream key. Keep the key private.
  4. Select destinations. Choose the connected platforms for this broadcast. Check the service’s current destination support and plan limits rather than assuming they are unchanged.
  5. Start and verify. Begin the encoder output and check each platform’s live preview or dashboard for the intended video and audio before relying on the setup for an important broadcast.

For exact OBS labels and relay settings, use the provider’s current instructions; interface names and available features may change.

Method 2: Configure local multi-output

A local setup routes the broadcast from your own equipment rather than handing distribution to a relay. The OBS Project community guide to streaming to multiple platforms with OBS describes using an RTMP server and FFmpeg, including copying a feed or re-encoding it for different destinations. It characterizes this approach as more involved and potentially requiring command-line familiarity. It does not establish a universal hardware requirement or performance result.

  1. Gather destination details. For each platform, obtain the current RTMP server URL and stream key if required. Confirm live eligibility and account status.
  2. Choose how to handle outputs. A copied feed avoids creating a separate encode for each destination, while transcoding can produce different outputs but adds encoding work. Choose according to the destinations’ requirements and what your equipment and connection can sustain.
  3. Configure routing. Use an RTMP server and FFmpeg or another suitable local routing setup to send the feed to the required endpoints. Follow the documentation for the exact software and version you use; there is no single command or configuration established here as suitable for all systems.
  4. Check the full signal path. Verify that each endpoint receives the expected video and audio. Test before an important broadcast and monitor the destinations while live.

If you are not comfortable maintaining the routing, diagnosing output failures, and accounting for local encoding demands, a cloud relay may be the more manageable option.

Check platform rules and the viewing experience

Rules differ by platform and by account agreement. Twitch’s Simulcasting Guidelines FAQ says its guidelines apply unless a creator has an agreement with Twitch that requires exclusivity. It also gives reducing Twitch video quality relative to other services as an example of degrading the Twitch viewing experience. Check the current policy and any agreement that applies to your account; the same terms should not be assumed for every creator.

Review the rules for every destination, including requirements that may apply to copyrighted material, music, or other content. A stream being accepted by an encoder or relay does not establish that the content is permitted on each platform.

Settings, bandwidth, and preflight checks

Choose settings that your connection and distribution method can sustain. The available guidance does not give a universal bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or upload-speed setting for all platforms and setups. Requirements vary with the stream configuration and destinations, so use each platform’s current guidance and test with the actual encoder and routing you plan to use.

  • Confirm the selected resolution and other encoder settings are supported by each destination.
  • Allow enough upload capacity for the outgoing feed and any additional local outputs your method creates. Do not treat one speed estimate as universal.
  • Check audio as well as video at every destination; a working preview at one service does not confirm that all outputs are correct.
  • Use a private or otherwise low-risk test where available before a broadcast that cannot be repeated.
  • Keep stream keys confidential, and verify the destination selection before starting.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom What to check Practical next step
One platform does not receive the stream That account’s live eligibility, selected destination, stream key, and server URL. Reconfirm the destination setup in the platform or relay dashboard, then test again.
Video or audio is missing at one destination The destination’s preview and the output settings or routing for that endpoint. Verify the signal reaching that platform rather than assuming other destinations have the same feed.
The stream is unstable or cannot sustain the chosen settings Upload capacity, encoder settings, and whether local outputs are being transcoded. Reduce demands by choosing settings your connection and setup can sustain, then retest.
Relay setup does not match the instructions you found Current interface, supported destinations, and account or plan limits. Use the provider’s latest documentation and confirm the destination is currently supported.
Twitch viewers receive a degraded experience Current Twitch simulcasting rules and any account-specific agreement. Adjust the workflow so Twitch is not degraded relative to other services, and confirm compliance with the applicable terms.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a prerecorded program that should keep looping on YouTube, rather than a live camera broadcast to multiple platforms, StreamNeo is a separate option. It keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it does not simulcast to multiple platforms or go live from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home: StreamNeo runs in the cloud. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
