One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a single H.264 stream, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps at 1080p30 or 6 Mbps at 1080p60. YouTube also recommends upload capacity at least 20% above the total outgoing stream bitrate: plan for at least 6 Mbps of available upload for one 1080p30 stream, before allowing for other network use. Use a two-second keyframe interval, constant bitrate (CBR), and test the setup with representative lesson audio and movement before leaving it running.
Those settings help avoid overloading the connection, but they do not make a continuous livestream a dependable lesson archive. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as automatic archives, and DVR may be limited or unavailable. Keep lesson files or local recordings separately, and publish individual lessons when learners need reliable rewind and chapter-by-chapter access.
Choose the lesson frame rate and encoder settings
Use an encoder workflow to send prerecorded lessons through YouTube Live. YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. For H.264 ingest, its current guidance recommends these bitrate settings:
| Lesson stream | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | Upload capacity with 20% headroom |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | At least 6 Mbps available upload for the stream alone |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | At least 7.2 Mbps available upload for the stream alone |
The upload figures apply YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation to one outgoing stream; they are planning arithmetic, not a guarantee of stable delivery. Allow additional capacity for other network traffic and any backup stream. YouTube’s bitrate table gives recommendations, not a promise that a particular connection or viewer will receive a certain quality. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and its streaming tips.

Use 30 fps unless the lesson benefits from 60 fps
For a typical talking-head lesson, lecture, or slide presentation, 30 fps is usually a sensible choice. Use 60 fps when the source has motion that benefits from the higher frame rate, such as detailed demonstrations or fast movement. The encoder should send the lesson at its actual intended frame rate rather than converting it to 60 fps without a reason.
Set CBR and keyframes
- Set rate control to constant bitrate (CBR).
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Set the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to match the chosen 1080p option.
YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 ingest options. Use those only if your encoder and workflow support them; the bitrate figures in the table above are specifically for H.264.
Understand what 1080p controls
The encoder’s 1080p setting describes the signal sent to YouTube. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into multiple viewing formats, so the source setting does not mean every viewer will receive 1080p on every device or connection.

Calculate upload headroom before starting a 24/7 stream
Use available upload capacity—not the download speed shown in an internet plan—to assess whether the connection can carry a continuous stream. For a single stream, multiply its bitrate by 1.2 to apply YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. If you send a primary and backup stream, include both outgoing bitrates in the total before applying the headroom.
- Add the bitrate of every stream leaving the network. For one 1080p30 H.264 stream, that total is 5 Mbps.
- Multiply the total by 1.2. For that single 5 Mbps stream, the result is 6 Mbps of available upload capacity.
- Allow more capacity for other devices, uploads, video calls, and changing network conditions. A shared home or office connection may have less available upload than its advertised maximum.
- Test the actual connection under realistic network use. A speed test at a quiet moment does not establish how much capacity will remain available throughout a long run.
If an encoder offers a separate backup output, include its bitrate as well. A backup can improve resilience, but it also adds outgoing traffic; it is not required for every creator.
Configure and test the YouTube Live workflow
YouTube identifies encoder streaming as an option for productions using production equipment or software encoders. Its guidance recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. The exact playlist or 24/7 automation method depends on the encoder workflow; YouTube’s published guidance does not prescribe a particular app or looping method.

- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and prepare the stream. Choose the appropriate stream settings and copy the stream key into the encoder.
- In the encoder, select RTMPS when available, set the output to 1920 × 1080 at the lesson’s frame rate, choose the matching H.264 bitrate, set CBR, and use a two-second keyframe interval.
- Run a test using lesson material with representative speech, music or other audio, and movement. Check the Live Control Room preview and look for stream-health warnings or messages.
- Confirm that the stream is visible from the channel or watch page and can be opened on a mobile device.
- For a workflow with a backup encoder, test failover before relying on it. YouTube’s tips describe stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network cable and confirming that the player switches to the backup.
A stream key is sensitive: YouTube describes it as similar to the encoder’s password and address. Keep it private and reset it if you believe it has been exposed. YouTube’s stream settings include auto-start and auto-stop options for supported encoder streams; choose them only if they fit the way your stream is managed. See YouTube’s live stream settings and encoder setup guidance.

Do not depend on the 24/7 stream as the only copy
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local archive backup. A stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. Save the original lesson files and, where appropriate, a local recording in storage sized for the files and the period you need to retain them. An external drive is one possible backup destination, but its capacity should be chosen for your actual files and retention plan; YouTube does not endorse a particular model or size. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Plan around DVR limitations
DVR lets viewers pause and resume a live stream, but YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers also cannot seek back to before the stream began. If learners need to find a specific lesson, rewind to a precise point, or revisit material later, publish the lessons individually or provide another stable access path rather than making the continuous livestream their only route. Details are in YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Troubleshoot a stream that overloads or drops
- Stream health reports connection problems: Check available upload capacity, not download speed. Reduce competing network use, verify that other devices are not consuming the connection, and make sure the total bitrate—including a backup stream—fits within the available upload with headroom.
- The stream is unstable despite a suitable speed-test result: Retest while the network is being used as it will be during the 24/7 run. Shared connections and changing conditions can reduce available capacity.
- The encoder output does not match the intended lesson: Confirm its resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR setting, and keyframe interval. Use 30 fps for ordinary lessons unless the content benefits from 60 fps.
- The viewer cannot rewind far enough: This can be a DVR limitation on a very long stream, not a bitrate problem. Publish the lesson separately or provide another dependable access method.
- A long stream has no automatic archive: Streams over 12 hours may not be captured. Retain original files and a separate local recording instead of treating YouTube’s archive as a full backup.
- You cannot create another stream or go live: YouTube may impose a daily stream-creation limit or restrict live access for account or policy reasons. Changing bitrate will not resolve an account-level restriction. Check YouTube’s live streaming restrictions and error guidance.
YouTube’s cited archive and DVR guidance describes limitations for streams longer than 12 hours; it does not establish a universal duration limit that automatically stops every livestream.
Choose a 24/7 workflow that fits the lessons and connection
Compare workflows by whether they can deliver the lesson at its intended 1080p frame rate, whether the available upload can sustain all outgoing streams with headroom, how the setup recovers from an encoder or connection interruption, and how original files and local recordings are protected. Also decide whether learners need DVR and rewind or would be better served by separately published lessons. YouTube’s guidance covers encoder settings, bandwidth, testing, archives, and DVR; it does not rank particular software or automation products.
