How to Stream Recorded Indie Game Playthroughs Continuously on YouTube

A practical guide to streaming recorded indie playthroughs continuously on YouTube, with setup steps, archive planning, rights checks and monetization caveats.

You can run recorded indie game playthroughs as a continuous YouTube live stream by sending them through an encoder to a YouTube event in Live Control Room. Before building the schedule, account for three constraints: YouTube may not archive a stream that runs longer than 12 hours, copyrighted game or music content can interrupt a broadcast, and monetization of a repetitive loop is not guaranteed.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions within the prior 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch. YouTube live-streaming tips and get started with live streaming.
  • Recorded playthrough files you have the right to stream, plus an encoder that can send video and audio to YouTube. YouTube identifies encoder streaming as appropriate for gameplay and overlays; it does not require a particular paid encoder. YouTube encoder setup.
  • A reliable network connection and enough local storage to keep recordings or backups. YouTube recommends checking local archive files, but does not require a specific drive or storage product. YouTube archive guidance.

Set up a YouTube live event and connect your encoder

  1. Activate live streaming. In YouTube Studio, use the live-streaming setup flow and complete any channel verification required. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
  2. Create or schedule the event. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live. In Live Control Room, create a stream or schedule one. Set the title, description, visibility and other event details, then save. You can share the event’s watch-page URL with viewers.
  3. Copy the ingest details. In the stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key shown by YouTube. Enter them in the corresponding server/URL and key fields in your encoder. Treat the key as a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed. YouTube stream settings.
  4. Load and test the playthrough. Select a recorded file or queue of files in the encoder or playback workflow you are using. Check that the picture, game audio and any commentary are present and in sync. Test the handoff between files if you plan to play them sequentially.
  5. Check Live Control Room before going public. Start the encoder feed and wait for YouTube’s preview and stream-health information. Confirm the correct event is receiving the signal. Do not assume the public stream is healthy just because the encoder says it is connected.
  6. Go live and monitor the session. Use the event’s go-live controls as applicable to your setup, and watch for stream-health alerts, interruptions or rights notices. YouTube also offers auto-start and auto-stop settings; test their behavior with your encoder before relying on them for unattended operation. YouTube stream settings.

Plan sessions around YouTube’s archive limit

YouTube says live streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That means a single uninterrupted day-long broadcast is not a dependable way to create a complete replay. YouTube recommends making a local recording as a backup. Archive live streams.

If preserving replays matters, divide continuous programming into separate sessions that finish comfortably before the 12-hour mark, then begin a new event. This is a practical way to work around YouTube’s stated limit, not a guarantee that every archive will process successfully. Record locally as well, verify the files after each session, and keep a separate copy if losing the source would be costly.

Clear game, music and other rights before broadcasting

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects material such as another copyrighted broadcast, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it if the material remains. You are responsible for having the necessary rights to everything in the feed, including music. YouTube live-streaming restrictions and YouTube Terms of Service.

  • Check the publisher’s streaming policy for each game. Do not assume that owning or buying a game automatically grants permission to rebroadcast every included asset.
  • Review the soundtrack, menu music, cutscenes, mods, overlays and any third-party clips or music separately. Secure permission or replace material you cannot clear.
  • If you have a separate license for third-party material, ask the rights owner whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube notes that licensed material can still trigger a live interruption if the owner has not allowlisted the channel. YouTube live-streaming restrictions.

There is no universal rule here that settles the status of every indie game’s soundtrack or publisher policy. Check the terms for the specific title and the rights for its included content.

Understand monetization risk for a looped channel

Streaming a playthrough continuously does not itself qualify a channel for monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams and call for original, authentic content rather than material that is mass-produced, generic or repetitive. YouTube reviews the channel as a whole, including its main theme, most-viewed and newest videos, watch-time share, metadata and About section. Its guidance does not give a definitive ruling on a continuous channel built from prerecorded indie playthroughs. YouTube channel monetization policies.

As an editorial matter—not a promise of approval—a library has a clearer case for distinct viewer value when playthroughs differ meaningfully, such as through a new game, route, challenge, commentary or deliberate curation. Simply repeating interchangeable material creates more risk under the policy. On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material is covered by its “inauthentic content” policy; the reused-content policy was unchanged. Copyright clearance and monetization eligibility are separate questions: satisfying one does not settle the other. YouTube channel monetization policies.

Joining the YouTube Partner Program and enabling individual features require eligibility and policy compliance. YouTube lists advertising, memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers among possible live-stream revenue features, with feature-specific requirements. Keep a continuous stream running: encoder or cloud

Manual encoder workflow

With a computer-based encoder, your machine and network must remain available while they are sending the feed. Arrange the files in the intended order, test transitions and local recording, and decide how you will respond if the encoder or connection stops. YouTube lists encoder streaming for gameplay, but the cited setup guidance does not compare encoders or establish their reliability for unattended continuous playback.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo runs prerecorded videos as a continuous YouTube stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It offers automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, with one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers. This can remove the need to keep a home encoder running, but it does not remove YouTube’s archive limit, rights requirements or monetization policies. The first day is free with no card; the same product is available for shorter or longer billing periods. See StreamNeo plans.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • You cannot start a live stream: confirm the channel is verified, check for live-streaming restrictions, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
  • YouTube shows no preview: verify that the encoder is sending to the URL and key for the correct event. Check the encoder connection, then wait for Live Control Room to receive the feed before going live.
  • The wrong event receives video: compare the event selected in Live Control Room with the URL and key entered in the encoder. Copy the current details again rather than relying on an old configuration.
  • The stream is interrupted or replaced: check YouTube notices and review every third-party element in the feed. A licensed track may still need the rights owner’s Content ID allowlisting.
  • The replay is missing or incomplete: streams over 12 hours may not be captured. Keep sessions below that threshold and verify a local recording rather than relying on the YouTube archive alone.
  • Files do not transition cleanly: test the full queue before launch, including the end of one recording and start of the next. Review video, audio and synchronization in the preview.
  • The channel is not approved for monetization: review the channel-level policy, not just the individual stream. Distinctive creator contribution and material variation may strengthen the editorial case, but cannot guarantee approval.

Pre-launch checklist

  • Live streaming is enabled and the channel is eligible to broadcast.
  • The scheduled event, visibility, metadata, stream URL and key are correct; the key has not been exposed.
  • The preview confirms the right file, audio and event, and the local recording works.
  • Sessions are planned to end before 12 hours if YouTube archives are needed.
  • Publisher permissions and rights for music and other included assets have been checked.
  • The channel’s format offers distinct value; monetization is treated as uncertain, not assumed.
