To broadcast a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live event over BSNL broadband, play the file through an encoder such as OBS Studio and send that encoder’s output to a YouTube Live stream. Measure your actual upload speed before choosing a bitrate: the download speed on your BSNL plan does not tell you how much video you can reliably send upstream.
What you need to do
The video file is not uploaded as a normal YouTube video and turned live automatically. An encoder plays it as its video source, then transmits the resulting stream to YouTube. You can use encoder software on a computer; YouTube also supports hardware encoders. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the workflow and lists OBS Studio as a software option.
- A verified YouTube channel eligible to livestream.
- A prerecorded video file and permission to use all of its video and audio in a live stream and any resulting archive.
- A computer running encoder software, or a compatible hardware encoder.
- A BSNL connection with enough stable upload capacity for the selected stream settings.
Enable YouTube Live before the event
If this is the channel’s first live stream, enable livestreaming in advance. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. The channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days. Check the channel’s eligibility and activation status in YouTube Studio before announcing an event. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility details explain the requirements.
Measure BSNL upload and choose a stream quality
Test the connection you will actually use
Run a speed test and look at upload speed, not just the download figure advertised for your broadband plan. Test at the location and time you expect to stream. Then send a representative test with movement and audio similar to the actual video, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages. A wired connection can help distinguish Wi-Fi problems from other issues, but it cannot overcome a line, routing, or plan limitation. BSNL service conditions vary by location and subscription; check the current terms for your own circle and plan rather than assuming a particular upload speed or allowance.

Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance as an encoder target
YouTube’s H.264 ingest guidance gives these values for the listed frame rate. They are recommendations for encoder configuration, not a guarantee that a BSNL connection can sustain them. See YouTube’s current live encoder settings.
| Video setting | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps, H.264 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
Choose a bitrate your measured upload can sustain consistently, allowing room for normal fluctuations. Begin with a conservative resolution and bitrate, run a representative test, and step down if the preview or stream-health status shows instability. Reducing the video bitrate or resolution can help when upload capacity is the constraint; changing Wi-Fi equipment will not fix an insufficient service upload rate.
Encoder settings for a straightforward setup
For broad compatibility, use H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says it must not exceed four seconds. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio; encoder options vary. Select RTMPS when your encoder supports it because it encrypts the connection to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder settings provide the specifications.

Create the YouTube Live event and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live. Create a stream or schedule it in the Manage tab. Scheduling creates a watch page viewers can visit and gives them the option to receive reminders.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding server/URL and key fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. You can manage or reset stream keys in Live Control Room. YouTube explains how stream keys work.
- In the encoder, select the prerecorded file as the video source and configure the video, audio, bitrate, and keyframe settings. Confirm that playback reaches the encoder’s output preview and that audio is present.
- Start streaming from the encoder. Wait for the signal and preview in YouTube Live Control Room, then select Go live when you are ready to begin the public event.
- Monitor stream health and YouTube’s messages during the broadcast. If the connection becomes unstable, lower the bitrate or resolution to a level your upload can sustain.
Menu wording can change as YouTube Studio is updated, but the essential sequence remains: create or schedule the event, copy its URL and key to the encoder, start the encoder, check the Live Control Room preview, and start the event there.

Check rights before you broadcast
You need the necessary rights for all picture and sound in both the live transmission and any archive. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even licensed material may require the rights holder to allowlist your channel through Content ID. YouTube’s livestream terms say creators must have the rights needed to exploit live content on Google services worldwide, including applicable music licensing rights. Read the YouTube livestream terms and conditions and its copyright guidance before using third-party material.
Copyright permission and YouTube monetization are separate considerations. Permission to broadcast a work does not by itself guarantee that a channel or video meets YouTube’s monetization rules; check the current YouTube Partner Program and reused-content policies if revenue eligibility matters. Avoid assuming that a documentary, music track, or other recording is free to rebroadcast just because it is publicly available online.

Plan for the archive and long broadcasts
YouTube can automatically archive a live stream that is under 12 hours, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the complete event matters, keep a local recording as well as relying on YouTube’s archive. YouTube’s archive guidance explains the limit.
Software, hardware, or cloud playback?
Encoder software on a computer
Software is a practical starting point and does not inherently require buying new equipment if you already have a suitable computer. It gives you direct control over playback and encoder settings, but the computer and its connection must remain available throughout the stream.
Dedicated hardware for unattended playback
YouTube’s encoder information lists the AJA HELO Plus and describes optional PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live. This is a specialized hardware route rather than a requirement for ordinary file-to-live streaming. Check the device’s current availability and program terms before choosing it.

Troubleshoot common problems
YouTube does not accept the encoder connection
Check that livestreaming is enabled for the channel, then confirm that the encoder has the correct stream URL and current key. If you have reset the key, replace the old one in the encoder. Keep the key private.

The preview buffers or stream health is poor
Compare the configured bitrate with measured upload performance, then lower bitrate or resolution and test again. Use a wired connection to check whether Wi-Fi is contributing to the problem, while remembering that a cable cannot remedy a service or routing limit.
The video appears but there is no sound
Check that the file’s audio is enabled in the encoder and that the correct audio source is routed to the stream. Confirm sound in the encoder preview before selecting Go live.
The stream is interrupted after starting
Read YouTube’s Live Control Room messages and inspect stream health. Check for upload instability and reduce settings if needed. If YouTube detects third-party material, review the rights and Content ID status for that content; a match can interrupt or terminate the broadcast.
The live event is missing from the archive
Check the event duration: streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived. For future broadcasts where the full recording is important, make a local recording rather than relying only on YouTube’s automatic archive.
