How to Stream Prerecorded Videos to YouTube Live from AWS in India

A practical guide to using an S3 MP4 as an AWS Elemental MediaLive source and sending its live RTMPS output to YouTube, with setup checks and troubleshooting.

To stream a prerecorded video to YouTube Live using AWS, store the MP4 in Amazon S3, use AWS Elemental MediaLive to read it as a video-on-demand input, then send MediaLive’s live RTMPS output to the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. S3 stores the source file; it does not itself broadcast the video. This workflow keeps encoding and delivery in AWS, but requires configuring and monitoring a MediaLive channel.

Before you set up the stream

Confirm that the YouTube channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. You also need an MP4 source, an S3 bucket, access to AWS Elemental MediaLive, and a scheduled or ready YouTube Live stream whose ingest URL and stream key you can retrieve from Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder guidance says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started; the AWS route is useful when you specifically want a managed cloud workflow or an S3-based source. YouTube: Get started with live streaming

How the AWS-to-YouTube path works

The media path has two different connections: MediaLive pulls the prerecorded MP4 from S3, then pushes a live encoded stream to YouTube. AWS documents MP4 as a video-on-demand input and gives an S3 location format such as s3ssl://bucket/object. MediaLive can send RTMP or RTMPS output to a compatible server; YouTube is the output destination in AWS’s workflow wizard. AWS Elemental MediaLive: File inputs · AWS Elemental MediaLive: RTMP push outputs · AWS Elemental MediaLive: Workflow wizard

  1. Prepare the MP4. Upload the video to an S3 bucket accessible to the MediaLive workflow. Keep the bucket and object name handy. The S3 address is a source location for MediaLive, not a public playback link for YouTube viewers.
  2. Create or schedule the YouTube Live event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, create or select the event, and copy its displayed stream URL and stream key. Prefer the RTMPS destination exposed by the lock icon; do not substitute an example server address or guess the ingest URL. YouTube: Set up your encoder for live streaming · YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
  3. Configure the MediaLive workflow. In AWS Elemental MediaLive, configure an MP4 VOD input using the S3 object location, then configure a channel and its output destination with the YouTube RTMPS server URL and stream key. AWS’s workflow wizard documents an S3 or HTTP MP4 source and YouTube output as a guided option; available steps may differ by account and configuration. Keep the input and output roles distinct: this workflow reads S3 MP4 and sends RTMPS to YouTube.
  4. Match output settings to the source and YouTube guidance. For an ordinary SDR stream over RTMP(S), YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1; use constant bitrate and set a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For H.264, YouTube’s recommended examples are 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Treat these as platform recommendations, not guarantees: choose a sustainable output consistent with the source and the configured MediaLive channel. YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple playback formats. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
  5. Start the channel and wait for YouTube preview. Start the MediaLive workflow, then check Live Control Room for the incoming stream preview and stream-health messages before making the event public or starting the scheduled broadcast. Do not assume that configuring the AWS output alone means viewers can already watch.
  6. Monitor the event and stop deliberately. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages during the broadcast, and check that the video and audio continue as expected. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder event at least two hours in advance and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived under YouTube’s documented behavior; do not rely on that behavior for longer broadcasts. Choose a protocol and keep the direction straight

For a straightforward MP4-to-YouTube workflow, use RTMPS for the output if the configured workflow supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the RTMP connection with TLS/SSL. MediaLive’s documented RTMPS support here is for output; its input-format documentation says it does not support RTMPS inputs. That is not a conflict in this setup: the input is an S3 MP4 file, and the output is RTMPS to YouTube. • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

HLS is a separate ingestion option, not the default recommendation for this simple workflow. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. If a workflow specifically requires HLS, YouTube’s published requirements include transport-stream segments of 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube: Stream using HLS

India-specific AWS checks and cost planning

Before building around a particular AWS Region in India, check current MediaLive availability for that Region and confirm that the workflow’s required features are supported there. The exact AWS cost depends on the selected channel configuration, runtime, input and output settings, and any redundancy. There is no single defensible price for this setup without those choices, so use AWS’s current regional availability and pricing information to calculate the deployment you intend to run; do not treat an estimate for a different configuration or Region as your bill.

Common problems and fixes

  • YouTube shows no incoming preview: Confirm that MediaLive is running, the output uses the current event’s exact server URL and stream key, and the YouTube event is open to receive the encoder. Check the MediaLive channel and YouTube stream-health messages rather than changing the S3 source blindly.
  • The S3 file cannot be read: Check the bucket and object spelling, the s3ssl://bucket/object source format, and that the configured workflow can access the object.
  • The stream connects but has errors or poor playback: Compare the selected codec, constant bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate with the source and YouTube’s current recommendations. A bitrate example is not a required setting for every source.
  • You are trying to use RTMPS as the MediaLive input: This workflow should use the MP4 in S3 as input. RTMPS is the YouTube-facing output; MediaLive’s input documentation does not list RTMPS input support.
  • You chose HLS expecting RTMP-like latency: HLS is segment-based and YouTube documents higher latency than RTMP. Use it only when the workflow has a reason to require HLS.

Protect the channel and the programme

Having a file and a working encoder does not grant rights to broadcast its contents. Before streaming a documentary, music, archival footage, or any third-party material, verify that you have permission for the live broadcast and any resulting archive. YouTube’s live-stream rules and copyright policies apply to streamed content; check the channel’s restrictions and review the platform’s current guidance before scheduling.
