To stream a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from AWS Mumbai, run an encoder on an EC2 instance in the Asia Pacific (Mumbai) region (ap-south-1) and send its output to the stream URL and stream key created in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. The instance needs reliable outbound internet access; use RTMPS when your encoder supports it, and configure the feed to YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. AWS and YouTube documentation establishes this workflow, but does not specify a universally suitable EC2 size or a tested FFmpeg command.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- An AWS account and an EC2 instance in Asia Pacific (Mumbai), region code
ap-south-1. The region name and code are listed in AWS’s EC2 service endpoints documentation. - A prerecorded video file accessible to the instance, plus an encoder that can read it and send an RTMP or RTMPS feed.
- The stream URL and stream key for your YouTube broadcast. Treat the key as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
Set up the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a new stream or select a scheduled stream, then locate its encoder settings.
- Copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder’s configuration. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in Manage live stream settings.
- Keep the key out of public scripts, screenshots, logs, and source-control repositories. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room before using the stream again.
YouTube’s encoder workflow is documented at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. For a scheduled broadcast, the encoder can be started first so you can inspect the preview before selecting Go live.
Launch and network the AWS Mumbai host
Choose an instance for the actual workload
Select an EC2 instance in ap-south-1 sized for the work your encoder will do. Simply forwarding or remuxing an already suitable file generally places a different demand on the host than decoding and transcoding it. Source resolution and frame rate, software versus hardware encoding, and reliability needs also affect sizing. The cited AWS and YouTube guidance does not benchmark instance families for this task, so test your chosen configuration under sustained load rather than assuming a particular size is sufficient.
Give the instance outbound internet access
The encoder sends media out to YouTube, so its subnet and network controls must allow outbound connections to the chosen ingest endpoint. AWS documents two common arrangements:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Public subnet: attach an internet gateway to the VPC, route the subnet through it, and give the instance public addressing as appropriate. Security group and network ACL rules must permit the needed traffic.
- Private subnet: use a NAT device for outbound internet access without assigning the instance a public address.
See AWS’s instructions for adding internet access to a subnet and managing EC2 instance IPv4 addresses. Confirm routing, DNS resolution, security-group egress, and any network ACL restrictions before the broadcast.
Keep administration access narrow
Do not expose SSH or RDP to every source address. Restrict administrative ingress to known addresses or use an appropriate managed access method. The media feed is outbound, so do not open an inbound media port on the instance unless another part of your design specifically requires it. AWS explains these controls in Create a security group for your Amazon EC2 instance.

Configure the encoder for YouTube
Use the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room, then match the output to the source and your available, sustained upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Its current encoder guidance lists these settings:
| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; prefer RTMPS when supported. |
| Video codecs | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1. |
| Audio codecs | AAC or MP3. |
| Rate control | Constant bitrate (CBR). |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps. |
| SDR color and depth | Rec. 709 and 8-bit. |
| Stereo audio | 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps recommended. |
| 5.1 audio | AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps recommended. |
These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that every source file or encoder will produce a good stream. For SDR H.264, YouTube lists 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Choose a target that matches the file and can be sustained by the instance’s uplink. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; its recommendations and protocol details are on Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and Streaming tips.

Start, monitor, and end the broadcast
- Start the encoder with the correct input file, YouTube server URL, stream key, and chosen output settings.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview. Check that picture and sound are present and review stream health before making the broadcast public.
- When ready, select Go live for the scheduled stream, if required. Monitor the encoder and YouTube stream health throughout playback, especially after startup or any network change.
- When the video is finished, stop the encoder’s output and end the YouTube stream as appropriate in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; consult its encoder workflow for current handling.
Choose the file and loop behavior deliberately
The right encoder setup depends on whether you want one scheduled broadcast or an ongoing feed, whether the input codecs are accepted as-is, and whether the file must be transcoded. The YouTube and AWS documentation linked here establishes the connection and stream settings, but not a tested FFmpeg command or a particular file-looping recipe. Those details depend on the installed FFmpeg build, input codecs, desired output, and how playback should behave at the end of the file. Validate the exact command and loop behavior on your instance before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Likewise, do not infer a latency or availability guarantee from choosing Mumbai. The sources identify the region and describe network setup, but do not compare Mumbai ingest latency with other AWS regions.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| YouTube receives no signal | Confirm the encoder is running; verify the stream URL and key; check DNS, subnet routing, NAT or internet-gateway configuration, and outbound rules for the ingest endpoint. |
| The preview does not appear or the stream is unhealthy | Check that the selected codec and encoder settings match YouTube’s guidance, the stream key belongs to the intended broadcast, and the connection sustains the configured bitrate. |
| Video freezes, drops frames, or disconnects | Check sustained outbound capacity and leave the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. Review the instance’s workload: transcoding may require more compute than stream-copying or remuxing. |
| Picture is present but audio is missing or distorted | Inspect the source audio track and encoder mapping, codec, sample rate, channel layout, and bitrate. Compare stereo or 5.1 output with YouTube’s listed recommendations. |
| Encoder cannot connect from a private subnet | Verify the NAT path, route tables, DNS, and egress restrictions. For a public subnet, verify internet-gateway routing and public addressing. |
| Stream key may have been exposed | Reset the key in Live Control Room, replace it in the encoder configuration, and avoid storing the replacement where it can be published or logged. |
