To broadcast local videos in sequence, keep the drive connected to a computer, play the files through OBS Studio’s VLC Video source, and send OBS’s output to a YouTube Live event.
How do I stream a playlist of local MP4 files to YouTube Live?
Use OBS as the encoder: it plays the files from the connected drive and sends the resulting live video to YouTube. For a sequence, add the MP4s to OBS’s VLC Video source. You need VLC installed for that source to appear. If you only need to play one MP4, OBS’s built-in Media Source supports MP4 and can loop a single file.
The external drive must stay connected and accessible while OBS reads the files. YouTube receives the encoded live output; it does not fetch the MP4s from your drive.
Can I use videos from an external hard drive in a YouTube live stream?
Yes, by playing them on a computer and streaming that computer’s output through an encoder such as OBS. Before setting up the source, connect and mount the drive, then play each file locally to confirm it works. Arrange the files in the intended order and avoid renaming or moving them after adding them to OBS.

A YouTube playlist is different: it organizes videos hosted on YouTube. Sharing a YouTube playlist link will not expose local files on your drive. Private videos in a YouTube playlist also require appropriate sharing permission for viewers. See YouTube Help’s playlist-sharing guidance.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check YouTube’s live-stream eligibility and setup guidance.
- OBS Studio and VLC installed. OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- The external drive connected, mounted, and containing MP4 files that play locally.
- A scheduled or created YouTube Live event, its stream settings, and a reliable upload connection.
Your YouTube stream key is a credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it like a password: do not put it in screenshots, public pages, or examples. Follow YouTube’s current live-stream, eligibility, and copyright rules.

How to play local videos in a YouTube livestream
- Prepare the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the event. Obtain the stream settings for the encoder. Keep the stream key private.
- Connect and check the drive. Mount the external drive before configuring OBS. Open each MP4 to check picture and sound, and settle the playback order. Leave the drive connected throughout the broadcast.
- Add the files to OBS. In the Sources dock, click + and select VLC Video. Add the MP4 files in the desired order. Enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should restart after the last file. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if you want a fixed order. OBS documents the VLC source and its controls in Media Sources.
- Set up the stream output. Configure OBS to stream to the YouTube event using the settings provided by Live Control Room. Start streaming from OBS, then inspect the event preview. Make the stream public or begin the event only when the preview looks and sounds right.
- Rehearse the full sequence. Test the same resolution, frame rate, scene layout, audio, and file order planned for the event. Confirm that the playlist advances, the drive remains available, and the YouTube preview is healthy. YouTube recommends testing before going live and continuously monitoring stream quality; its guidance recommends around 20% headroom above the total upload bitrate. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Monitor the live stream. Watch OBS and Live Control Room for interruptions or quality problems, and confirm that both audio and video remain correct as files change.
How long will YouTube keep the live-stream archive?
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local archive as backup. Do not rely on YouTube to capture a stream longer than 12 hours: YouTube warns that it may not be captured at all. For details, see YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video is missing from OBS: Install VLC. OBS requires it for this source; if you use 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC.
- Only one video plays: Check that all files are in the VLC Video playlist, rather than added as separate sources that may overlap.
- A file is missing or playback stops: Check that the drive is still mounted and that the source still points to the file. Recheck the sequence before reconnecting to a live event. OBS’s local-file playback documentation does not establish recovery behavior after a drive disconnect.
- The preview looks poor or viewers report buffering: Check stream health, encoder settings, and available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends around 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate; rehearse under representative conditions.
- A YouTube playlist link does not show the local files: That is expected. A YouTube playlist contains videos hosted on YouTube, not files stored on your computer or external drive.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. The external-drive-and-OBS method above is for files played from a computer; StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and does not stream from a camera.
