How to Stream Mixed-Resolution Videos in One Continuous YouTube Live Stream

YouTube can receive one continuous encoder feed even when its source clips have different resolutions. Set a sustainable output, test the playlist and monitor Live Control Room.

Yes. You can play videos with different resolutions in one continuous YouTube live event by sending YouTube a single encoder feed and having the encoder switch between the clips. YouTube transcodes that incoming feed into playback formats for viewers; the source files do not all need identical dimensions. The key is to choose a stable output the encoder and upload connection can sustain, then test how your particular encoder handles each clip and transition.

What “one continuous stream” means

YouTube receives the encoder’s live output, not each source file as a separate event. Your encoder plays the clips in sequence and sends one live feed to the YouTube server URL using the stream key. YouTube then creates multiple viewer playback formats from that feed. This is different from making all source files the same resolution before streaming.

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If you have a reason to set the output manually, use one consistent output resolution and frame rate that your encoder and connection can maintain. A 4K source does not require a 4K live output, and a lower-resolution clip does not by itself require you to change the output mid-event.

Prepare and test the playlist

  1. Put the clips in air order. Add them to the playlist or sequence in the encoder you plan to use. Make a note of each clip’s resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate and audio format. YouTube’s general encoder documentation does not specify how every encoder’s playlist feature will handle these differences.
  2. Choose the output format. Prefer YouTube’s automatic resolution and frame-rate detection unless you have a reason to create a custom stream key and set these manually. If using manual settings, choose an output supported by the encoder and sustainable on your upload connection.
  3. Check the picture and sound. Test representative clips at each materially different resolution and aspect ratio. Check whether the encoder scales, crops, stretches or letterboxes each one, and listen for abrupt audio-level changes, silence or format-related playback problems. Do not assume the transition behavior without testing it in your chosen software.
  4. Run a complete private or unlisted test. Include the transitions, audio and motion expected in the actual broadcast. Confirm that the encoder remains stable, the preview appears as expected and Live Control Room reports healthy stream status before scheduling a public event. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the real stream.

Set a sustainable output bitrate

Choose the bitrate for the encoder’s incoming output resolution, frame rate and codec—not merely from the nominal resolution of one source clip. YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists these H.264 recommended rates:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Incoming H.264 output YouTube recommended bitrate
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps
2160p at 30 fps 30 Mbps

These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality or a promise that your network can sustain the rate. Check YouTube’s live encoder table for the latest values and the relevant codec, resolution and frame-rate combination. Leave upload headroom rather than setting the encoder at the full measured capacity of the connection, and test under conditions similar to the broadcast.

Connect the encoder to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
  2. Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown for that stream into the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone with it may be able to connect an encoder to your channel’s stream. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
  3. Start the encoder’s playlist/feed and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check stream health before using the live controls to begin or manage the public event.
  4. When finished, end the event with the stream controls and stop the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that a longer continuous stream will be archived as one video.

RTMP/RTMPS or HLS?

For ordinary mixed-resolution SDR clips, source-resolution differences alone are not a reason to choose HLS. Use the protocol and encoder settings supported by your software and the YouTube stream setup; YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder guidance. HLS is an option for cases such as HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP, but YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP feed.

Option When it may fit Trade-off or requirement
RTMP/RTMPS Standard encoder workflow where the selected software and stream setup support it. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
HLS Use cases such as HDR or codecs that are not supported over RTMP. Higher latency and additional ingest requirements: TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range mode.

YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as video codec options, with supported combinations depending on the stream setup. Check the current official encoder settings and HLS requirements before selecting a codec or protocol.

Copyright and channel considerations

Before broadcasting a documentary, soundtrack, archival clip or other third-party material, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for the intended use. A stream being prerecorded or unlisted during a test does not itself establish that you may use the material in a public broadcast. Review YouTube’s current copyright and channel monetization policies for your circumstances; do not assume that permission to use one clip covers the rest of a playlist.

Troubleshooting

  • A clip is cropped, stretched or surrounded by bars: The encoder may be fitting a source with a different aspect ratio to its output canvas. Review the encoder’s scaling, fit/fill and canvas settings for that playlist, then test the affected clip and transition again.
  • The image changes size or looks soft between clips: Different source resolutions can look different on a shared output canvas. Confirm the encoder’s scaling behavior and whether a different fixed output better suits the full sequence; do not raise output resolution beyond what your connection and encoder can sustain.
  • Viewers see buffering or the stream health indicator degrades: The selected bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the connection may fluctuate. Lower the output bitrate or resolution, check upload stability, and repeat a test before the public event.
  • The preview does not appear: Check that the encoder is sending to the correct server URL and that the stream key matches the selected YouTube stream. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  • Audio cuts out or changes level at clip boundaries: Inspect each file’s audio track and the encoder’s playlist transition behavior. Normalize or repair the source audio where appropriate, then test the exact sequence with sound.
  • HLS does not connect or has more delay than expected: Verify the required segment format, rolling playlist limits, HTTPS methods and absence of byte-range mode. For a conventional SDR playlist without a codec or HDR requirement, use the standard protocol supported by your encoder instead.
