How to Stream Live Video from Amazon S3

Amazon S3 stores live-stream segments; MediaLive ingests and encodes the feed, and CloudFront delivers it. Here’s how the AWS architecture fits together.

You can use Amazon S3 in a live video workflow, but S3 does not ingest a camera feed or encode video. In AWS’s documented architecture, AWS Elemental MediaLive ingests and transcodes the source, S3 stores the resulting HLS segments, and Amazon CloudFront delivers them to viewers. In short: MediaLive makes the stream, S3 holds its media files, and CloudFront serves them.

Can Amazon S3 stream live video?

Not by itself. S3 is object storage, not a live encoder or ingest service. A live workflow must turn the incoming feed into media segments and a manifest that playback clients can request. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS with Amazon S3 reference solution uses MediaLive for ingest and transcoding, S3 for the encoded HLS output, and CloudFront as the content delivery network (CDN).

AWS states in its CloudFront video documentation: “You must use an encoder to package video content before CloudFront can distribute the content.” S3 can be the segment origin in this design, but the other services make it a live stream viewers can play.

How the S3 live-streaming architecture works

  1. Capture and send the source. A camera, contribution encoder, or other upstream system provides the live feed to a MediaLive input. The appropriate input depends on the source’s protocol and connectivity.
  2. Ingest and encode with MediaLive. AWS Elemental MediaLive receives the feed and transcodes video, audio, captions, and metadata into the required outputs. The S3 reference solution describes an adaptive-bitrate HLS output.
  3. Store the HLS output in S3. MediaLive writes the encoded segments and manifest to the configured S3 destination. These objects are the origin media, not a stream that S3 independently generates.
  4. Deliver through CloudFront. CloudFront uses the S3 custom endpoints as an origin and distributes the media to viewer devices. Its behavior must suit changing live manifests and frequently requested media segments.
  5. Deploy and monitor the services. The reference solution deploys a CloudFormation stack and uses supporting services including IAM, CloudWatch, and Systems Manager. AWS identifies CloudTrail and logs from MediaLive, S3, and CloudFront as sources of operational visibility.

See AWS’s architecture details for how the reference stack connects these components.

Choose the MediaLive input to match the source

The source connection determines which MediaLive input type and network setup to use. AWS’s S3 solution lists RTP_PUSH, RTMP_PUSH, URL_PULL, and INPUT_DEVICE; AWS Elemental Link is an option for device input. The broader MediaLive workflow guide describes streaming cameras and contribution encoders as examples of upstream systems.

  • For push input: Confirm the source can reach the MediaLive input using the selected protocol. AWS describes an input security group that admits a specified source IP range; check the source’s address and firewall path before deployment.
  • For pull input: Confirm the feed is available at a reachable URL and that MediaLive can access it.
  • For a device input: Check the device’s configuration and Region requirements before choosing where to deploy the channel.

Do not select an input only because its name seems familiar: match it to the actual source protocol, direction of connection, and network path. AWS’s description of how MediaLive works explains the relationship between inputs and channels.

Configure CloudFront for live HLS

Live manifests change as new segments arrive, so caching must not make viewers follow stale playback information. AWS’s CloudFront live-streaming guidance recommends separate cache behaviors for manifests and media segments, with path patterns chosen for the format and file extensions in use. For live content, it instructs users to set the minimum time to live (TTL) to five seconds or less to help avoid stale content.

  • Separate manifests from segments. Set routing and cache policies for each type of object rather than assuming one behavior suits both.
  • Forward query strings only when needed. The guidance includes an m query string for MediaPackage HLS and CMAF endpoints to represent endpoint modification time. Forward start and end for MediaPackage time-shifted viewing, and aws.manifestfilter when using manifest filtering. These are feature-dependent; do not forward them blindly in an S3-origin workflow that does not use those features.
  • Use HTTPS for viewers. AWS’s procedure recommends redirecting viewers to HTTPS.

Cache behavior patterns and query-string handling depend on the origin and packaging workflow. Use the applicable CloudFront guidance rather than copying a policy designed for a different endpoint.

When to use S3 directly and when to consider MediaPackage

The documented S3 solution fits a straightforward workflow in which MediaLive already produces the required HLS format and S3 stores the segments. AWS also presents MediaPackage as an option in its broader CloudFront guidance when a workflow needs multiple delivery formats or MediaPackage packaging features. These are different architecture choices, not interchangeable defaults.

Security, Regions, and cost planning

Protect the media origin

The reference solution documents access restrictions for its website bucket and uses IAM for fine-grained permissions. Apply controls to the actual media origin and delivery path: a control shown for a website bucket should not be assumed to protect every media object. Review which services and principals need access, and use HTTPS for viewer delivery as appropriate to the workflow.

Verify Region availability

MediaLive is available only in specified AWS Regions, according to the solution’s design considerations. An AWS Elemental Link source must be used in the Region where that device is configured. Check current service and device availability for the intended deployment Region before building around it.

Estimate the actual workload

AWS identifies encoded profile, stream bitrate, and viewer count as cost factors. Storage, requests, and content delivery also belong in a workload estimate for an S3-and-CloudFront design. There is no single universal price in the cited documentation: estimate the specific channel, output, storage, and audience rather than treating an example as a general quote. AWS’s design considerations discuss cost and deployment factors.

Common design problems to check

  • The feed never reaches MediaLive: Recheck that the input type matches the source protocol, that a push source can reach the input, and that its IP range is admitted by the input security group.
  • Viewers see an old manifest or playback stalls: Review the separate CloudFront behaviors for manifests and segments, and check that the live minimum TTL is five seconds or less as AWS recommends.
  • A query-string-dependent feature fails: Check whether the workflow uses MediaPackage time shifting or manifest filtering. Forward start, end, or aws.manifestfilter only for the corresponding feature, and account for the documented m parameter when using the relevant MediaPackage endpoints.
  • Access is denied or content is exposed: Verify the permissions on the actual media bucket and origin path, along with CloudFront access and viewer HTTPS settings. Do not rely on an example website-bucket restriction as a blanket media protection policy.
  • The planned Region or device path is unavailable: Confirm current MediaLive Region availability and, for Elemental Link, use the Region in which the device is configured.
  • The bill differs from an early estimate: Recalculate using the actual encoded profile, bitrate, audience, storage, requests, and delivery workload.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel built from uploaded videos rather than a camera-based AWS live pipeline, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. India-based creators can pay with UPI. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream a live camera feed. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
