Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You can use VLC to play a kirtan playlist continuously, but VLC’s documented playlist-streaming example does not establish that VLC alone can send a compatible feed directly to YouTube Live. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires its current server URL and stream key, plus a compatible outgoing signal. Build and test the complete path—playlist, encoder output, network connection, and YouTube preview—before announcing a broadcast. If you want continuous playback without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud-based alternative for YouTube.
What you need to know before setting up the stream
There are two separate jobs: VLC can play successive media files and stream output, while YouTube Live receives a feed from an encoder configured with the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop User Documentation 3.0 demonstrates a playlist broadcast over HTTP to a receiver on a local network. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes its own generic encoder workflow. Those sources do not verify a direct VLC-to-YouTube setup, a particular VLC build, or a tested bridge between the two.
So treat VLC as the playlist source, not as a confirmed YouTube-compatible encoder. Before relying on it, confirm that your actual setup can deliver a signal YouTube accepts, including the required protocol and settings. If it cannot, use an encoder that supports YouTube’s ingestion requirements and can accept the VLC output; the exact bridge and configuration depend on your software and system and are not established by the cited documentation.
1. Confirm that your channel can livestream
YouTube’s “Get started with live streaming” guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. The same guidance sets a minimum age of 16 for livestreaming. Check eligibility in YouTube Studio before preparing the event; account and channel conditions can prevent a technically correct encoder setup from going live.

2. Prepare and check the kirtan playlist in VLC
- Use recordings you are allowed to broadcast. Confirm permission for each specific recording and its intended livestream, including the relevant territory. Rights in a sound recording may differ from rights in the underlying composition. Religious or devotional subject matter does not, by itself, make a recording free to rebroadcast.
- Add the tracks to a VLC playlist. Arrange them in the sequence you want viewers to hear, then play through the list locally. Check that files open, the order is correct, audio levels are reasonable, and transitions behave as intended.
- Choose the repeat behavior. Set VLC’s playlist playback mode to repeat the sequence if you want it to cycle. Confirm the mode on the VLC version and operating system you will actually use; menu labels can vary by version.
- Keep output open across track changes if using VLC stream output. VLC’s documented stream-output playlist example uses multiple inputs and the
sout-keepoption so its output remains open as one file ends and another begins. This is evidence of VLC’s playlist-output capability, not proof that its example is compatible with YouTube’s ingestion endpoint.
VLC’s stream-output documentation explains how its sout chain processes media and can save or stream output over a network. The documented playlist example sends HTTP output to a local receiver; do not copy that example’s local-network destination and assume it is a YouTube server configuration.
3. Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Create and choose Go live to reach Live Control Room. Create or schedule the event and select the stream settings appropriate to that broadcast.
- Copy the current stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the matching fields in the encoder you are using. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.”
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes it as similar to a password and address: do not publish it, include it in a public screenshot, or expose it in a command or configuration shared publicly. If it is compromised, reset it through YouTube’s Live Control Room stream settings.
- For a scheduled event, follow Live Control Room’s prompts after the incoming feed appears. You may need to wait for the preview and click Go live; starting the encoder feed does not necessarily publish the event automatically.
4. Check the encoder signal against YouTube’s settings
YouTube’s “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” page recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension of RTMP. It lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 for video and AAC or MP3 for audio, recommends constant bitrate encoding, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum recommended interval of four seconds. The suitable bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate in the guidance that should be applied to every mostly static devotional stream.

Set these in the encoder that actually sends the feed to YouTube, where supported. Do not assume that a given VLC release or output module supports RTMPS or exposes every relevant YouTube setting: the cited VLC documentation does not establish those details. Confirm the outgoing protocol, codec, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval in the software you use, then verify that YouTube receives a usable preview.
5. Test the complete path before the broadcast
- Run a representative section of the playlist—not just a short unrelated test file—through the intended setup.
- Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event, as YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for both picture and sound. Confirm that the image is framed as intended, audio is present and clear, and the track transition works without closing the outgoing stream.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health indications and keep monitoring during the broadcast. A playlist continuing in VLC does not prove that the computer, internet connection, encoder output, or YouTube ingest is uninterrupted.
- For a scheduled stream, use the Live Control Room controls and prompts to start the public event. When finished, stop the encoder feed and end the event as YouTube instructs.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish an archive guarantee for streams lasting 12 hours or more.

Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming signal | Encoder compatibility, server URL, key, or connection | Recheck the current URL and key in Live Control Room and the matching encoder fields. Confirm the encoder is sending a protocol and format YouTube accepts. VLC’s documented local HTTP playlist example does not validate a direct YouTube connection. |
| The preview appears, but the event is not public | Scheduled event workflow | Return to Live Control Room and complete its preview and Go live prompts if shown. |
| Playback stops or the output closes between songs | Playlist behavior or stream-output handling | Test the sequence locally, verify repeat settings, and check how the selected output handles the end of each file. VLC’s documented playlist-output example uses sout-keep to keep output open across successive files, but that example is not a YouTube recipe. |
| Video or audio is rejected or unstable | Encoder settings | Check protocol, codec, constant-bitrate configuration, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s encoder guidance. Select a bitrate appropriate to the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than assuming one universal value. |
| The key may have been exposed | Credential security | Reset the stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. Do not share the new key publicly. |
| A track is claimed, muted, blocked, or otherwise restricted | Broadcast rights and platform handling | Review the specific recording and composition permissions for the intended livestream and territory, and check the notice YouTube displays. The sources here do not determine rights for any particular kirtan recording. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube channel without keeping a home computer running, StreamNeo plays uploaded recordings from the cloud. Upload the kirtan recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is for uploaded video playback, not a live camera feed.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on for the stream to continue.
- One flat price per slot covers the quality of the uploaded file, up to 4K 60fps; StreamNeo does not re-encode it or divide quality into tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required, once per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
