To stream vertically with Streamlabs Mobile, set up a scene, choose camera or screen capture, configure the stream, and preview the result before going live. For screen sharing, put your phone in portrait orientation before you start and keep it there: rotating mid-stream has been reported to make the shared image appear smaller on some destinations. Portrait orientation alone does not guarantee that YouTube will place a broadcast in the Shorts feed.
How do I stream in portrait mode with the Streamlabs Mobile app?
- Install Streamlabs Mobile from your device’s app store, sign in, and allow camera and microphone access if prompted.
- Open the main menu and select Scenes. Create or choose a scene, then add the widgets, overlays, text, or images you want viewers to see.
- Open Streaming Settings and review the available video, audio, camera, and screen-capture options. Choose the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio input, and camera settings that suit your device, connection, and destination. The available controls differ between iOS and Android; the documentation does not establish one bitrate or frame rate that is right for every phone and network.
- Select your destination and choose whether to stream from the camera or share the screen. If sharing the screen, set the phone to portrait before starting the broadcast and keep it in that orientation.
- Preview and arrange the scene, start the stream, and check the destination’s live preview to confirm the framing and sound.
Before going live, charge the phone, close background apps, and suppress notifications so an alert does not intrude on the broadcast. A phone tripod or mount can help hold a steady camera frame, but it is optional.
How to frame a portrait scene
Edit in landscape, preview for portrait
Streamlabs’ scene-editing guidance describes editing widgets in landscape mode, even when preparing a portrait camera stream. In the described editor behavior, the camera image can have black bars at its sides, and widgets placed far to the left or right may appear in those side areas. Treat this as a layout consideration, not as a guarantee that every destination receives a particular aspect ratio. Check the actual live preview before relying on the placement of text or other important elements.
Keep important elements clear of the edges
- Place titles, captions, and essential graphics where they remain visible in the portrait preview.
- Check that overlays do not cover the main subject or obscure screen content.
- Inspect the destination preview on a phone as well as the editor, especially if viewers may watch on both mobile and landscape screens.

Streamlabs reports a known screen-share case in which a stream starts in landscape and the phone is then rotated to portrait: the output can remain locked to landscape while the display rotates, making the shared image look smaller. Its guidance listed disabling orientation lock as a workaround for Twitch or Trovo, but reported no workaround for YouTube and other platforms at the time that article was updated. Issue status can change, so the safer practice is to start in the orientation you intend to keep and verify the current app behavior.

What to expect on YouTube
A portrait broadcast sent through third-party streaming software may be displayed vertically without being detected for YouTube’s Shorts feed. Check the live preview and do not assume that rotating the phone activates every YouTube vertical-live feature.
YouTube documents a separate Live Control Room workflow for horizontal and vertical output, including a third-party encoder path using the matching stream keys and RTMP(S). YouTube Help says: “By default, your live streams will go live in both horizontal (16:9 aspect ratio) and vertical (9:16 aspect ratio) formats at the same time when you stream from the Live Control Room.” That statement applies to streaming from the Live Control Room; it is not a promise about a portrait stream sent from Streamlabs Mobile.

Destinations and multistreaming
Streamlabs’ mobile guide lists connections for Twitch, YouTube, X, Facebook, TikTok, and Kick, and describes custom RTMP for iOS. Available destinations and controls may vary by app version and device, so check what your installed app offers.
Streamlabs says streaming to multiple platforms at once from the app requires Streamlabs Ultra. This is a separate choice from portrait orientation: choosing portrait does not by itself require Ultra. Decide whether you need one destination or simultaneous destinations, then confirm the current app’s options and subscription requirements.

Troubleshooting portrait streams
- The shared screen looks small after rotation: The broadcast may have started in landscape and retained that output orientation. End the stream, set the phone to portrait, and start again without rotating mid-stream.
- Important widgets appear at the sides or in bars: Revisit their placement in the scene editor and check the portrait live preview. The editor’s landscape view does not necessarily match how every destination displays the stream.
- The stream is vertical but not in YouTube’s Shorts feed: Portrait orientation does not guarantee Shorts-feed detection for third-party streams. Check YouTube’s current workflow and destination preview; use the Live Control Room’s documented vertical-output path if you need that separate workflow.
- A setting or destination is missing: Mobile controls differ between iOS and Android, and available features can change. Confirm the installed version’s options rather than assuming another device’s instructions apply.
- Video or audio is unreliable: Recheck the connection and the app’s selected video and audio settings, close background apps, and make sure the phone is charged. There is no universal bitrate or frame-rate recommendation established for every device and network.
