A NAS is storage in this workflow, not normally the device sending the live stream. Test the exact file, NAS connection, sound, and stream before scheduling a broadcast.
How the NAS-to-YouTube workflow works
The path is: NAS storage → encoder computer → OBS scene → YouTube Live. YouTube describes encoders as a way to broadcast gameplay, while OBS can play media files in a scene. The NAS-to-encoder connection is an implementation choice: the reviewed YouTube and OBS guidance does not specify how to configure a particular NAS share or guarantee compatibility with every NAS, file, codec, or network setup.
In practice, the encoder computer needs reliable read access to the VOD and enough capacity to play it while encoding and uploading the live output. A standalone hardware encoder is another possible encoding approach, but no specific model is required for this workflow.
Check that your channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. Check your channel’s status and live access in YouTube Studio rather than waiting until stream day.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream for the broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter both in OBS’s streaming settings. Use the values shown for the stream you created; do not assume a key from a different event is the right one.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a credential that allows an encoder to send video to your channel. If it is compromised, YouTube documents resetting it.
Make the NAS VOD accessible to the encoder
On the computer that will run OBS, open or mount the NAS share using the method supported by your NAS and operating system. The exact share configuration is not specified by YouTube or OBS, so verify it on your own setup before building the broadcast around it.
- Confirm the encoder computer can open and read the complete video file from the share.
- Play the file from that computer and check both picture and audio. Watch for pauses, missing audio, or playback failures.
- Leave the file in a stable location and keep the NAS, encoder host, and network path available throughout the broadcast.
- If access or playback is unreliable, copy the VOD to local storage on the encoder computer and test that copy instead.
Load one VOD or a playlist in OBS
One VOD: Media Source
In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the video file accessible from the encoder computer. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes the feature as: “Media source adds different types of media files to your scenes.” The listed video types are MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; listed audio types are MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. These file-type listings do not guarantee that every codec variant or NAS share will work, so test your particular file from beginning to end.

Several VODs: VLC Video source
For an ordered playlist, OBS documents the VLC Video source, which requires VLC to be installed. Add the source, point it to the intended playlist, and verify the order, playback, looping behavior, transitions, and audio in a test. Do not assume that a playlist setting or file path will behave the same across every NAS and OBS setup.
Add optional scene elements
An OBS scene can combine the media source with other sources, such as titles, a camera, or a microphone. Add them only if they are part of the program; they are not required for a VOD-only broadcast. Check that optional sources do not cover essential gameplay or introduce unintended sound.

Configure and test the encoder before going live
- Set OBS to use the YouTube stream URL and key. Confirm that the selected stream is the one created in the Live Control Room.
- Play the VOD in OBS. Check the whole media path—not just a still preview—including the opening, audio, and any playlist transitions you plan to use.
- Check upload capacity. YouTube recommends having upload bandwidth with 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. Leave room for other network traffic where possible.
- Open the YouTube Live Control Room preview. Verify that YouTube is receiving the encoder output and that picture and sound are correct before starting the public broadcast.
- Run a realistic test. Test the NAS share, OBS playback, encoder output, and network path together. If the stream matters, do this before the scheduled event rather than relying on a file-open test alone.
Monitor the live stream and finish cleanly
During the broadcast, monitor YouTube’s live preview and the audio and video reaching viewers. If you are also recording locally, YouTube’s tips recommend checking that the local archive file size continues to grow. Once you end the event in YouTube, stop the encoder as directed in YouTube’s tips, then confirm that the archive and any separate local backup are present.
Plan for long streams, DVR, and backups
- Automatic archive: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, so keep a local archive backup if you need a dependable recording.
- DVR: DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during a live stream, but YouTube notes that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Choose the setting based on how viewers should watch, and do not rely on DVR for very long broadcasts.
- NAS is not a backup by itself: If the source VOD matters, retain a separate copy that is not dependent on the same file, share, or device used for playback.
