Choose how to send the highlights to YouTube Live
An encoder converts video into a format YouTube can receive. YouTube says encoders are suited to gameplay and overlays, and they can be software or standalone hardware. The right route depends on whether your highlights already exist as files, whether you want to broadcast console output, and how much of the setup you want to automate.

YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos. That listing establishes a possible workflow; it is not proof of YouTube endorsement or a guarantee of growth. Check any service’s current features, pricing, rights handling, and terms directly before purchasing.
Check rights and channel eligibility before setting up
Clear every part of the broadcast
YouTube’s livestream terms make the creator responsible for having the necessary rights to use live content, including music licensing rights. Having access to or owning a game does not by itself establish that its soundtrack or every third-party asset in a clip is cleared for your broadcast. Check the publisher’s rules and the rights for music, overlays, and clips, and keep relevant records. See YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.

Confirm live streaming is enabled
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch. Check YouTube’s live streaming tips and the encoder setup guide.
Set up a continuous highlights stream
- Prepare the feed. Decide whether you are looping exported highlight files, assembling a playlist, or bringing console output into an encoder. Check that the video and audio play correctly from beginning to end. If you need console footage in a PC scene, verify the capture-device or remote-play route first; OBS explains the options in its game-console capture guide.
- Create the live stream. Open YouTube’s Live Control Room and set the title, description, visibility, category or type, and other event options. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains the available controls.
- Copy the stream key into the encoder. Create or select a stream key in the Live Control Room and enter it in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Reset it if it is exposed.
- Start the feed and inspect the preview. Confirm that YouTube receives the expected picture and sound before relying on the broadcast. Check that the event is accessible at the intended visibility and that the source is looping as intended.
- Make a monitoring and recovery plan. A long-running local encoder depends on the computer and connection staying available. Check the stream periodically and decide how you will notice a stopped feed and restart it. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring audio and video; for a continuous broadcast, plan those checks as an ongoing routine.
- Decide how to preserve recordings. Keep a local recording if you need a dependable copy. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete YouTube archive matters, split the broadcast into shorter sessions rather than relying on an automatic archive. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Understand monetization and archive limits
Continuous playback does not guarantee monetization
YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams and cover reused content, including clips and compilations. Its July 15, 2025 notice clarified the inauthentic-content policy and said the reused-content policy did not change. A continuous compilation may therefore raise a review question; no particular format, edit, or amount of commentary guarantees approval. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies before building a channel around repeated highlights.

Long-running streams need an archive plan
YouTube’s guidance distinguishes streams shorter than 12 hours from streams longer than 12 hours: shorter streams can be automatically archived, while longer ones may not be captured at all. The platform’s archive is not a substitute for a local copy when you need to preserve the full broadcast.

Do I need a capture card to stream gaming highlights?
No. A capture card is one way to bring console output into a PC encoder. It is not automatically needed for PC gameplay, and direct console streaming may be an option for supported consoles.
Can I rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for an all-day stream?
No. YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, so keep a local recording or use shorter sessions if you need a complete archive.
