How to Stream Audio to YouTube for a 24/7 Music Radio Channel (And What “Lossless” Really Means)

You can keep lossless source files, but YouTube Live’s documented ingest and transcoding workflow does not provide lossless listener delivery. Here’s how to configure a compatible feed and plan rights and continuity for a 24/7 music channel.

You can’t deliver lossless audio to YouTube Live listeners through YouTube’s documented live-ingest workflow. For a 24/7 music channel, keep lossless files as your source or archive, but send YouTube a compatible AAC or MP3 feed. YouTube then transcodes the live stream for playback. That distinction matters: a lossless file going in does not make the broadcast lossless.

What “lossless” means for a YouTube live stream

Lossless audio preserves the source audio data without lossy compression. But the format of your music files is separate from the format accepted at live ingest and the versions YouTube delivers to viewers. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs, and YouTube transcodes live streams into playback formats. The documented workflow therefore does not offer lossless listener delivery for a YouTube Live broadcast. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and LiveStreams API documentation describe the supported ingest path.

You can still preserve lossless originals for your own archive, editing, or later distribution. OBS also distinguishes local recording formats from streaming formats in its audio/video formats guide. That local master is not the same thing as the encoded feed sent to YouTube.

Choose an ingest path and compatible audio settings

Use the documentation for the protocol your encoder actually sends. The following are YouTube’s published constraints; they are not guarantees about perceived sound quality or lossless playback.

Ingest path Published audio support Practical setting or constraint
RTMP/RTMPS AAC or MP3 YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo and 128 kbps stereo audio. Its guidance recommends RTMPS as the secure protocol. Source.
HLS AAC HLS ingest specifies one audio track. Follow the HLS-specific requirements rather than assuming RTMP/RTMPS settings apply unchanged. Source.

Do not configure FLAC, ALAC, or WAV as live-ingest codecs on the assumption that YouTube accepts them because your source files are lossless. If you use an encoder that exposes separate recording and streaming settings, keep the lossless format for a local recording if needed and use AAC or MP3 for the YouTube feed.

Set up a 24/7 music stream responsibly

  1. Clear the music rights before configuring the station. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions place responsibility on the provider to have necessary rights for live content, including applicable music licensing rights. The terms do not establish that buying a track, using a consumer music subscription, or holding a generic “royalty-free” licence covers an always-on worldwide stream. Confirm that your agreement covers the actual music, territories, live use, and duration with the rights holder or licensing provider.
  2. Resolve Content ID handling with rights owners. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A licence alone may not prevent interruption if the owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask about allowlisting before launch and retain the licence and confirmation. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
  3. Configure your encoder for the chosen ingest path. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and use the provided server URL and stream key in your encoder’s stream settings. Set the audio codec and parameters to match the applicable YouTube guidance above. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or share it outside the people and systems that need it. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the connection flow.
  4. Test the complete signal chain. Before announcing a permanent station, check that the encoder connects, the audio is present and stable, the correct track is being sent, and YouTube reports healthy stream status. Monitor stream health during operation; the encoder settings guide recommends testing before going live. A successful codec configuration does not establish that you have music rights.
  5. Design the broadcast lifecycle. YouTube’s encoder workflow says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one uninterrupted 24-hour stream will be archived as a single complete video. Decide how the broadcast will be ended and restarted, how you will monitor it, and how the next session will begin if the connection drops. YouTube’s documentation does not establish a guaranteed uninterrupted 24/7 architecture or a universal restart interval. See the encoder guide.
  6. Keep source and broadcast records distinct. Retain lossless masters separately if archival quality matters, and keep records of music permissions and Content ID allowlisting. Neither a lossless local copy nor a healthy encoder status changes the format viewers receive from YouTube.

Common problems and what to check

  • You expect viewers to hear lossless audio: YouTube’s documented live ingest uses lossy AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, and YouTube transcodes the stream. Keep a lossless source or local archive, but describe the YouTube broadcast accurately.
  • The stream reports an unsupported audio codec: Check the encoder’s streaming output—not just its recording format—and select AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. For HLS, use AAC and a single audio track. YouTube’s API documentation and HLS guide specify those constraints.
  • The live stream is interrupted over music: Check YouTube’s copyright notification and contact the relevant rights owner. Verify that your licence covers the use and that the channel has been allowlisted where required; do not assume a licence automatically prevents Content ID action. YouTube copyright guidance.
  • The stream ends or the archive is incomplete: Check the Live Control Room and encoder connection, then follow your planned restart process. Automatic archiving is documented for streams under 12 hours, not as a promise of a single archive for a longer continuous broadcast. YouTube encoder workflow.

Let the station run in the cloud instead

If the goal is to keep uploaded music playing on YouTube while your own computer is off, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed. The computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
