How to Stream a YouTube Playlist of Speedrun VODs as a Continuous Live Channel

A YouTube playlist does not become live by looping it. Here’s how an encoder-based broadcast works, what to check before launch, and a cloud option for uploaded speedrun VODs.

You can make a continuous live channel from speedrun VODs, but YouTube’s playlist loop is not the way: it repeats videos for ordinary playback and does not create a live broadcast. To appear live, you must feed an ordered sequence of videos into a live encoder and send that feed to a stream created in YouTube Studio—or use a cloud service that does this for uploaded videos.

What “playlist as a live channel” actually requires

The signal path is: choose VODs you have permission to rebroadcast, sequence and play them, encode the playback as a live feed, then send that feed to YouTube Live using the stream URL and stream key. YouTube documents how to create and broadcast a live stream with an encoder, but its playlist-loop control is only a viewer playback feature. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not identify a supported tool that automatically turns a YouTube playlist into an encoder feed.

YouTube lists mobile, webcam, and encoder approaches to live streaming. For a continuous sequence of gameplay recordings, an encoder workflow is the relevant option; software encoders are supported, while hardware encoders are an option for higher-production events, not a stated requirement for this use. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Check eligibility and rights before building the feed

Confirm the channel can go live

YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to stream. Check eligibility in YouTube Studio before investing time in automation; access can also depend on YouTube’s current account requirements. See YouTube’s eligibility and streaming guidance.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Get permission for every part of the VODs

A public video or an existing playlist is not, by itself, proof that you may rebroadcast its contents. Speedrun recordings can include game footage, music, overlays, and other third-party material. YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the rights needed to exploit live content on Google services worldwide, including applicable music rights; live content must follow the Community Guidelines. YouTube also prohibits playlists that violate its Community Guidelines, including cases where the collection violates policy as a whole. Review the terms for the actual content and territories before launch: YouTube Terms of Service and YouTube Community Guidelines.

Set up a DIY encoder broadcast

This is the supported YouTube-side workflow. You still need a playback/playlist system that can deliver the VOD sequence to an encoder. Because the reviewed YouTube pages do not establish a particular playlist-to-encoder product, verify the current documentation, YouTube compatibility, source handling, and terms of any automation tool you choose rather than assuming a YouTube playlist URL can be used directly as a live input.

  1. Prepare the sequence. Make an ordered list of authorized VODs and decide how the feed should handle the end of the list, unavailable videos, and interruptions. Confirm that your playback method can output continuously to the encoder. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not specify a playlist automation tool.
  2. Create the live event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Choose settings such as privacy, DVR, auto-start, and auto-stop for the intended presentation. DVR lets viewers pause and resume the event; decide whether that behavior fits your channel. Follow the current setup steps in YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
  3. Connect the encoder. Copy the server/stream URL and stream key shown for the event into the encoder. Treat the key as a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not publish it or include it in a public playlist or configuration.
  4. Choose a sustainable output. Set the encoder’s video and audio output to match what your connection and playback system can sustain. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers supported protocols, codecs, frame rates, and bitrate recommendations. There is no single bitrate suitable for every resolution and frame rate; use the relevant YouTube recommendation for your chosen output rather than selecting a high bitrate by default.
  5. Start the feed and inspect the preview. Start the encoder output, then verify that Live Control Room receives it and that the preview has the expected picture and sound before making the event public or directing viewers to it.
  6. Monitor the broadcast. Watch stream health and check the video and audio on the watch page, channel page, and a mobile device. YouTube recommends testing ahead of time and leaving upload capacity equal to at least 120% of the total stream bitrate—20% headroom—to reduce the risk that other network use or connection variation interrupts the feed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
  7. End the event deliberately. When you stop, end the live event in the encoder and in YouTube Studio as applicable. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive behavior is not a promise of indefinite uptime or a way to keep a live event running forever. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.

Playlist automation: what to verify

The encoder steps do not answer the separate question of how to feed a YouTube playlist—or a set of VOD files—into the encoder continuously. The official pages above explain YouTube’s live ingest, not a supported automatic playlist-to-encoder bridge. Before relying on third-party automation, check its current documentation and terms directly.

  • Can it lawfully and reliably play the specific videos or files you plan to use?
  • Does it preserve the order you want, and what happens when a video is private, removed, or unavailable?
  • Can it output a compatible feed to YouTube Live, and can you set the encoder output appropriately?
  • How does it handle a source interruption or network failure, and what monitoring or recovery does it provide?
  • What are its recurring costs, licensing terms, and limits on continuous operation?
  • Do its operation and the content you stream comply with YouTube’s policies and your rights obligations?

Troubleshooting a continuous VOD broadcast

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The playlist repeats on YouTube but the channel is not live Playlist looping only repeats viewer playback; it does not send an encoder feed. Create a live event in Live Control Room and send it a feed using an encoder, or use a service designed to play uploaded videos as a YouTube live stream.
YouTube does not receive the encoder signal The stream URL or key may be missing or incorrect, the encoder may not be sending, or the event may not be configured as intended. Check the event’s current server URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm encoder output is running, and inspect the preview. Keep the key private.
The feed stutters or loses quality The connection may not sustain the total output bitrate, particularly when other devices use upload bandwidth. Check stream health and available upload capacity; lower output bitrate or quality if needed and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom.
Picture or audio is wrong in the live preview The playback-to-encoder path or encoder output settings may not match the intended feed. Test the complete path before launch, inspect both picture and sound in the preview, and verify the selected codec, frame rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s current settings guidance.
A VOD stops, disappears, or cannot be played The source may have been removed, made private, restricted, or otherwise become unavailable; automation behavior varies by tool. Check the source and the automation tool’s documented handling of unavailable items. Do not assume it will skip or recover unless the tool documents that behavior.
The stream is interrupted by a rights or policy issue A VOD or element within it may not be cleared for rebroadcast or may violate YouTube policy. Review rights for the video, music, overlays, and other material, and check YouTube’s live-stream terms and Community Guidelines before resuming.
