You can stream a playlist whose videos have different resolutions by keeping the live output format fixed and normalizing each authorized source to that format. Choose a resolution and frame rate your Azure VM can sustain, scale or pad each item to the same canvas, and send one continuous stream to YouTube Live. YouTube then transcodes the incoming stream for viewers; they do not all have to watch at the encoder’s ingest resolution.
How mixed-resolution videos fit into one live stream
The resolution of a playlist item is its source format. The resolution you send to YouTube is the output format of your encoder. Those do not have to match item by item: normalize each source to one chosen canvas before it reaches the outgoing live encoder. This is a practical encoding approach; YouTube’s documentation describes ingest and viewer transcoding but does not prescribe a specific playlist-normalization command.
For example, if you choose a 1920×1080 output, a smaller source can be scaled up or placed on a 1920×1080 canvas with padding. A larger source can be scaled down to fit. Padding preserves the source’s aspect ratio but may leave bars; stretching to fill the canvas can distort the image. Choose deliberately rather than changing the outgoing resolution at each transition.
Prepare the Azure VM and the playlist
Confirm that you can use every item
Only include videos you own or are authorized to rebroadcast, and make sure the source files are available to the VM. The guidance here does not establish a YouTube-approved method for downloading or extracting playlist media, nor does it verify the terms or legality of any particular downloader. Do not treat scraping or downloading as endorsed by YouTube.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose one stable output format
Decide on the output resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate before starting. YouTube Live recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default; manual resolution selection is available through a custom stream key in Live Control Room. The encoder’s ingest format is not a promise that every viewer receives that same resolution, because YouTube transcodes the live stream for playback.
Normalize the sources consistently
For each item, prepare a compatible video canvas and consistent frame rate, pixel format and audio behavior. Scale or pad to preserve the image’s proportions, and check audio levels and continuity at transitions. This can be done before streaming or during playback. Pre-rendering makes output dimensions and transitions more predictable but requires preparation time and storage; real-time processing is more flexible but depends on the VM having enough CPU or GPU capacity to process each item at playback speed.

Check bandwidth before choosing quality
Azure outbound bandwidth varies by VM size. Microsoft describes the outbound allocation as a per-VM limit aggregated across attached network interfaces; all outbound traffic counts toward it. Accelerated networking may help a VM approach its allocation, but it does not increase the allocation ceiling. Treat the published allocation as guidance, not guaranteed internet throughput. See Microsoft’s TCP/IP performance tuning for Azure VMs.

Choose the stream bitrate for the codec, resolution and frame rate, then leave room for network variation. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom in its streaming tips. Measure the actual connection from the deployed VM and account for its other outbound traffic, not just the encoder.

Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the current supported options and conditions. Do not select a higher ingest bitrate merely because the VM has a powerful CPU; available egress is a separate constraint.
Configure YouTube Live and start the playlist
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule the live stream and select the appropriate stream settings. Keep the selected output format consistent with the format your playlist encoder will send.
- Set the encoder output. Use a supported codec and protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS for Live; its guidance describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP. The listed encoder settings recommend constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and say not to exceed four seconds.
- Use HLS only when its specific advantages are needed. YouTube documents HLS ingest as an alternative for HDR or codecs unsupported over RTMP. HLS has higher latency and requires segment and playlist handling; it is not a fix for mixed source resolutions.
- Enter the stream key in your encoder. Treat it as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream. Use a custom stream key if you need to set a manual resolution in Live Control Room. Do not include the key in public scripts, logs or screenshots.
- Run a representative test. Play material with typical motion and audio, check that the playlist transitions cleanly, and allow YouTube to report ingest health before the real event. Monitor the stream during transmission and respond to any warnings or dropped frames.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Bars, stretching or a cropped picture: the sources have different aspect ratios or dimensions. Revisit the scale-and-pad strategy and use one consistent output canvas; avoid stretching unless distortion is acceptable.
- Resolution or frame-rate changes at item boundaries: the playlist is passing source formats through rather than normalizing them. Convert each item to the chosen output format or ensure real-time processing applies the same settings throughout.
- Buffering, dropped frames or unstable ingest: bitrate may be too close to available egress, or other VM traffic may be consuming bandwidth. Measure from the deployed VM, account for aggregate outbound traffic, and lower the target bitrate or output format until the stream is stable with YouTube’s recommended headroom.
- Encoder cannot keep up: real-time decoding, scaling and encoding may exceed the VM’s available processing capacity. Test the full workload; consider pre-rendering normalized files or choosing a less demanding output.
- YouTube rejects or flags the ingest: verify the stream key, protocol, codec, bitrate mode and keyframe interval against the current Live Control Room settings. Review YouTube’s stream-health messages rather than assuming a playlist resolution mismatch is the only cause.
- Audio gap or abrupt level change at a transition: source files may have differing audio streams or levels. Standardize audio handling in the prepared sequence and test transitions before broadcasting.
