Use OBS Studio: add the video and audio-only files as separate Media Sources in one scene, enable Loop on both, then stream the combined scene to YouTube. The files remain independently controllable in OBS, but viewers receive one combined live program—not selectable audio and video files.
What you need to know before setting it up
- OBS Studio can play local video and audio files as Media Sources and repeat each when playback ends. Supported formats listed in OBS documentation include MP4, TS, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM for video, and MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV for audio. Format support can depend on the installed OBS version and system. OBS Media Sources
- YouTube receives OBS’s combined output. Separate OBS sources let you arrange and mix content before it is encoded. They do not give viewers independently selectable files or tracks. OBS’s multiple audio tracks guide concerns recording for later editing, not separate selectable tracks in an ordinary live stream. OBS Sources Guide OBS Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide
- You need live-stream access on the channel. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- Check the rights for both files. Make sure you are permitted to use the audio and video in a public live stream and any resulting archive. A file being available to download does not establish permission to broadcast it. YouTube: Manage live stream settings
Set up a looping stream in OBS
- Create or schedule the YouTube event. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room to create or schedule the stream. Choose public, private or unlisted visibility according to whether you are broadcasting, rehearsing or sharing a limited-access link. Find the event’s stream URL and stream key in its stream settings. YouTube: Manage live stream settings
- Create an OBS scene. In OBS, select or create a scene for the broadcast. In the Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source. Give it a recognizable name such as “Documentary video,” then choose the video file. Enable Loop in the source’s properties. Position and size the source so the picture fills the canvas as intended. The exact layout depends on the video’s aspect ratio and your OBS canvas settings. OBS Media Sources
- Add the separate audio file. In the same scene, select + in Sources and add another Media Source. Name it, choose the audio-only file and enable Loop. Check the OBS Audio Mixer: the source must not be muted, and its meter should move during playback. OBS Media Sources
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service, then enter or connect the server and stream key shown for the event in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio. YouTube: Manage live stream settings YouTube encoder setup
- Set the encoder output for the chosen stream quality. Use an OBS YouTube preset if one is available, and compare its output with YouTube’s current encoder guidance for your chosen resolution and protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. Check the specified video and audio codecs, frame rate, keyframe interval and bitrate rather than assuming one setting fits every resolution. YouTube encoder settings
- Leave upload headroom. Your connection needs to sustain the combined outgoing stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s bitrate. A fluctuating connection may still cause problems even if a speed test briefly reaches the target. YouTube streaming tips
- Rehearse in the Live Control Room. Start the encoder and check the YouTube preview before going live. Confirm that the video is framed correctly, the audio is audible, the mixer meter moves, the two sources behave as intended at the loop boundary, and YouTube reports healthy stream status. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. YouTube live streaming tips
- Start and monitor the broadcast. When the preview and stream health look right, start the event in YouTube’s Live Control Room if required. Monitor sound, picture and stream health while it is live. When finished, end the event on YouTube and stop the encoder in OBS. OBS Quick Start Guide
Choose the right kind of loop
Loop two files independently
With two Media Sources, OBS repeats each file when that source reaches its end. If the audio and video have different durations, their repeat points will not necessarily coincide. As a practical consequence of separate per-source loop controls, a music or narration track may drift out of alignment with the picture across loop boundaries. If exact synchronization matters, align the durations before streaming or make a single synchronized master file instead. OBS documents the per-source Loop control, but does not guarantee synchronization between independently looping files. OBS Media Sources
Loop a playlist
If you want a sequence of files to repeat, use OBS’s VLC Video source with a playlist and its Loop Playlist control. VLC must be installed for this source to appear in OBS. This is suited to rotating through multiple clips; it is distinct from adding two independent Media Sources for one video file and one audio file. OBS Media Sources
Understand the archive limit
YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that an indefinitely running loop will produce one complete, permanent archive. If you need a complete recording, plan the broadcast duration and archive workflow accordingly; for a long-running channel, decide when to stop and restart rather than relying on an unlimited archive. Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No audio in the stream | The audio source is muted, routed incorrectly or not playing. | Check the OBS Audio Mixer for mute status and meter activity. Confirm the file plays in its Media Source properties, then verify the YouTube preview before going live. OBS Quick Start Guide |
| Audio and video stop matching after a repeat | The sources loop independently and have different durations. | Use files with aligned durations or create a synchronized master file. Separate Loop controls do not guarantee synchronized boundaries. OBS Media Sources |
| The VLC playlist source is missing | VLC is not installed or available to OBS. | Install VLC, restart OBS and check the Sources add menu again. OBS documents that VLC is required for the VLC Video source. OBS Media Sources |
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview | The event may not be active, or OBS may have an incorrect server or stream key. | Compare the server and key in OBS with the event’s Live Control Room settings. If the key may have been exposed, reset it. YouTube: Manage live stream settings |
| Stream health is unstable or the broadcast drops | Upload capacity may be too low or variable for the selected bitrate. | Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback, use its current encoder guidance for the selected quality and protocol, and preserve the recommended 20% upload headroom. YouTube streaming tips YouTube encoder settings |
| The archived video is incomplete or missing after a very long loop | The stream exceeded the duration covered by YouTube’s automatic archive guidance. | Plan a shorter broadcast or a deliberate stop-and-restart archive workflow; streams under 12 hours are the duration YouTube says are automatically archived. Or let it run in the cloud
OBS is a good fit when you want local control and can keep the computer and connection available. If you want a pre-recorded YouTube loop to continue without a home computer running, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It plays uploaded videos, not camera input, and streams to YouTube.
