But a folder that automatically advances from one video to the next is a different requirement: the available Streamlabs documentation confirms media files such as MP4 can be used as sources, but does not establish a built-in folder-playlist workflow. Check the media-source controls in your installed version before relying on automatic sequencing.
Before you start: check channel access and video rights
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube also states that streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Use only video and audio that you own or are licensed to broadcast. Having a video saved locally does not grant permission to rebroadcast it.
- Install and open Streamlabs Desktop on the computer holding the video files. Keep the computer and its internet connection running while you use this local playback method.
Can Streamlabs Desktop play videos from a folder?
Streamlabs Desktop builds a scene from sources, and Streamlabs describes ordinary media files such as MP4 as usable media sources. Its media-file article also discusses looping media, though that article was published in 2019 and updated in 2022; verify the exact labels and options in your current app. See Streamlabs’ media-file article.
That does not confirm that Streamlabs can import a folder and automatically play every file in sequence. Do not assume that adding one file creates a folder playlist. If your installed version has a playlist or media sequencing control, confirm how it handles ordering, end-of-file behavior, and looping before scheduling a broadcast. Otherwise, use a supported source arrangement you have verified, or play a single media file and restart or change sources yourself.
Set up the YouTube stream and connect Streamlabs
- Create or select the event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or select a scheduled event. Scheduling provides an event page and a preview/Go live sequence; an unscheduled stream follows a different start flow. Check the active controls for the event you chose. YouTube’s instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Get the encoder details. In the event’s stream settings, locate the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a scene, recording, or public post. You can review YouTube’s key and URL context at Manage live stream settings.
- Connect Streamlabs Desktop. In Streamlabs, open Settings > Stream and connect or select YouTube if that option is available for your setup. If the current connection flow calls for manual encoder details, enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the designated fields. Streamlabs’ Quick Start Guide, dated May 20, 2026, covers general platform, scene, and source setup.
- Make a scene for the video. Create or select a scene, then use the Sources panel to add a media-file source and choose the local video. Confirm the video is visible and that its audio is audible in the Streamlabs mixer. Exact media-source labels can vary by app version.
- Choose playback behavior. Enable looping only if you intend the selected file to repeat. If you need several files to advance automatically, test the full sequence in your installed version; folder sequencing is not established by the documentation cited here.
Choose output settings YouTube can receive
Use a sustainable setting rather than selecting the maximum available resolution by default. YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 frames per second, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Follow YouTube’s current encoder table for the selected codec and output. Its H.264 recommendations include:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection or computer can sustain the stream. Higher resolution and frame rate require more bitrate. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the full table and applicable codec details.
Check that your available upload bandwidth can carry the total stream bitrate with about 20% spare capacity, as YouTube recommends in its streaming tips. Leave headroom for normal network variation rather than using the full measured upload rate.

Test, go live, and end the event
- Run a realistic test. Test with similar movement and audio to the intended video. Confirm the media plays, audio is present, the key and URL are correct, and the YouTube Live Control Room preview looks right. YouTube recommends testing before the event and checking the preview.
- Start the broadcast. For a scheduled encoder stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live. For an unscheduled stream, follow the active encoder flow shown in YouTube Studio.
- Monitor while streaming. Watch YouTube’s stream health and check audio and video quality during the event. If health warnings appear, lower output bitrate or resolution as appropriate and recheck the connection.
- End both sides cleanly. End the event in YouTube Live Control Room and stop sending content from Streamlabs Desktop. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in Studio’s Live tab; do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for longer streams.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Incorrect stream URL or key, wrong selected event, or an encoder connection that is not active. | Recheck the URL and key against the selected Live Control Room event, reconnect the YouTube account if needed, and confirm the key has not been exposed. |
| Video appears but has no sound | The media source or mixer is muted, or the file has no usable audio track. | Check the source’s audio controls and Streamlabs mixer meters, then test the file locally before going live. |
| One video plays, but the next file does not start | A single media source is not the same as an automatically advancing folder playlist. | Verify whether your installed Streamlabs version exposes and supports a playlist or sequencing control. Test the complete order and end behavior privately first. |
| Stream health warns of connection or bitrate trouble | Output bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or network conditions may be varying. | Reduce bitrate or resolution, use a wired connection if available, and preserve the recommended upload headroom. |
| The scheduled event shows no preview | The encoder may not be sending to that event’s key, or the stream has not connected. | Confirm the selected event and encoder details, then wait for the Live Control Room preview before using its Go live control. |
Or let it run in the cloud
