How to Stream a Radio Station to YouTube from a Synology NAS

A practical guide to relaying internet radio to YouTube from a Synology NAS, with YouTube encoder settings, copyright checks and a clear caveat about Synology’s camera-only broadcast documentation.

You can relay a radio station to YouTube from a Synology NAS only if an encoder that runs on your setup can read the station’s stream and send it to YouTube. YouTube’s workflow requires an encoder, a server URL and a private stream key. Synology’s documented Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature is for camera video; it does not establish a built-in way to relay an internet radio stream. The steps below explain the parts you can verify and where NAS-specific instructions depend on your model, DSM version and audio source.

Before you begin: check the source and rebroadcast rights

Confirm that an encoder can read the station’s stream

Get the station’s actual stream URL and format, then check that the encoder you intend to use can ingest it. A station’s public player page is not necessarily the same thing as a stream URL an encoder can read. The stream format and your Synology model and DSM version determine which implementation, if any, is practical.

The available Synology documentation does not verify a current NAS package, Container Manager setup or command line for relaying an internet radio stream. Do not assume that a particular model can run the encoder continuously or recover automatically after a source or network interruption.

Get permission for a YouTube simulcast

Confirm that the station’s terms and the applicable rights allow you to retransmit its programming on YouTube. YouTube’s livestream terms require the content provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation on Google services, including applicable music rights, and to maintain required licenses, consents and approvals for the relevant territory. A station’s permission to listen to its broadcast does not by itself establish permission to simulcast it on YouTube. Read YouTube’s livestream terms.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may cause a placeholder to replace the stream, and continued use may interrupt or terminate it. Even if you have a license, a rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for the licensed content not to be interrupted. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

What Synology’s documented broadcast feature does—and does not do

Synology documents a Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature that sends a selected camera stream to YouTube using the YouTube RTMP path and key. The cited documentation is for Surveillance Station version 8 and says it supports H.264 video. It describes camera video, not a radio station URL or an audio-only relay, so it is not evidence that the feature will carry radio audio. Check Synology’s Live Broadcast documentation.

A software encoder running on a compatible NAS could be a possible route, but the exact package, configuration and commands depend on the NAS and source format. The guidance here does not claim a tested Synology configuration. Before choosing an implementation, establish whether the encoder can run on your NAS, ingest the actual station stream, produce any required audio and visual formats, use RTMPS, and recover from dropped source or network connections. Also consider how much setup and ongoing maintenance you are prepared to handle.

Set up the YouTube side

  1. Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a stream. Go to the Live Control Room and create a new stream or schedule one. YouTube’s encoder workflow provides the connection details the encoder needs. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key as a credential: YouTube describes it as the information that lets an encoder send content to your channel. Keep it private. If someone else obtains it, they may be able to transmit to your stream.
  3. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when the encoder supports it. RTMPS is RTMP transmitted over TLS/SSL. Copy the RTMPS server URL shown in Live Control Room and pair it with the stream key. If your encoder does not support RTMPS, check its compatibility and YouTube’s current options before proceeding. Read YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

Configure an encoder for the stream

Use YouTube’s published encoder requirements and recommendations as the baseline, then confirm that your chosen encoder supports both the station’s input and the required YouTube output. YouTube lists RTMP or RTMPS for transport, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval, and 44.1 kHz for stereo audio. Check YouTube’s encoder settings.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Audio: Choose AAC or MP3 output and, for stereo, set the sample rate to 44.1 kHz. Whether your encoder can accept the station’s source format and convert it correctly must be checked for that encoder.
  • Video: A radio program may need an accompanying still image or motion visual, depending on the encoder workflow. The cited YouTube pages do not prescribe a specific visual, and the Synology camera-broadcast documentation does not supply one for radio.
  • Rate control and keyframes: Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval as YouTube’s published guidance. Set resolution and bitrate according to YouTube’s current settings for the output you intend to send and what the encoder can sustain; do not assume a NAS can encode a particular quality without checking its capabilities.
  • Transport: Use the RTMPS server URL and key from Live Control Room if the encoder supports RTMPS.

Do not copy a command line or container recipe for a different NAS model and assume it will work. The correct setup depends on the DSM version, NAS hardware, available encoder software, stream URL and audio format.

Start the encoder and verify the live feed

  1. Start the encoder and confirm that it can connect to the station source and send output to YouTube.
  2. Watch the incoming preview and stream status in YouTube Live Control Room. Check that audio is present and that any visual output appears as intended.
  3. Start or promote the live broadcast only after the preview and status look right. If the connection fails, recheck the source URL, encoder input compatibility, RTMPS support, server URL and stream key.
  4. When finished, stop the encoder to end transmission. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Common problems and what to check

  • The NAS cannot open the source: Verify that you have the station’s direct stream URL, not merely its player webpage, and that your encoder accepts the stream’s actual format.
  • YouTube does not receive the feed: Confirm that the encoder is running and that its server URL and stream key match the current stream in Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
  • The encoder cannot connect over RTMPS: Check whether the encoder supports RTMPS. If it does not, it cannot use the RTMPS endpoint; verify available options against YouTube’s guidance before selecting another transport.
  • Audio arrives but the broadcast is not as expected: Check the encoder’s output format and sample rate against YouTube’s settings, and determine whether the workflow requires a still or motion visual.
  • The stream is interrupted after a rights match: YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder or interrupt or terminate it. Confirm your rights and ask the rights holder about channel allowlisting where applicable; a license alone does not guarantee uninterrupted transmission.
  • The stream stops after a network or source drop: Recovery behavior has not been established for a particular Synology setup here. Check whether the chosen encoder can reconnect to both the source and YouTube, and plan to monitor it rather than assuming automatic recovery.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from videos you upload. It does not ingest a live radio station URL or go live from a camera, so it is not a direct replacement for the radio-relay workflow above. If your aim is instead to keep a YouTube stream running from recordings you have the rights to use, upload the video, add your YouTube stream key and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo or start the free day.
