YouTube’s encoder workflow is clear: prepare the event in YouTube Studio, connect the encoder with the stream URL and key, start sending video, check the preview, and go live. Do not mistake Streamlabs Talk Studio’s documented prerecorded-video scheduling feature for a verified Streamlabs Desktop workflow.
Before you start: check YouTube Live eligibility
Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do not wait until broadcast time to check access. See YouTube’s live-streaming prerequisites.
Prepare the event in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio, choose Create, then Go Live.
- Use the Stream tab to create or configure a stream, or use Manage to schedule one. Scheduling lets you promote the broadcast and gives viewers the option to receive reminders.
- Set the title, description, visibility, and other event details. Confirm the privacy and metadata settings before broadcasting.
- Find the stream URL and stream key in the encoder setup. Keep the key private: it functions as a credential that allows an encoder to send a feed to your YouTube event.
YouTube’s encoder instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Connect Streamlabs Desktop to YouTube
The current Streamlabs Desktop getting-started guide covers general setup: adding sources and scenes, choosing a streaming platform, entering stream details, and going live. It does not provide verified current steps for selecting a local video file, controlling its playback or loop, restarting it, or routing its audio.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In Streamlabs Desktop, follow its current general setup to choose YouTube as the platform if that option is available.
- If the encoder instead asks for server and key details, copy the stream URL from YouTube Studio into the server field and the stream key into the key field. Do not share the key or expose it in a recording or screenshot.
- For the prerecorded source itself, check the controls in your installed Desktop version before relying on them. The cited official Desktop guide does not confirm the local-file source workflow or playback options, so there is no substantiated click-by-click procedure to give here.
Streamlabs has a separate article titled How to Live Stream Pre-Recorded Video, but its scheduling and upload steps describe Talk Studio, not Streamlabs Desktop. In Talk Studio, the documented flow is to schedule a stream, select destinations, choose “Pre-recorded video,” upload the file, enter event details and a thumbnail, then schedule. Those instructions should not be followed as if they were Desktop controls.
Test the encoder, then start and monitor the broadcast
- Before the event, test with moving video and audio representative of the recording. Check that the audio is present, the motion is smooth, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream.
- Review the encoder’s output settings. YouTube recommends H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. AAC or MP3 are its recommended audio codecs. YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Consult its current encoder settings and resolution/bitrate guidance for values suited to your chosen resolution and format; do not treat one bitrate as right for every stream.
- Start the encoder so it sends the feed. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview in YouTube Live Control Room, then select Go live.
- Watch stream health and audio during the broadcast. If the connection or encoder settings produce poor health, correct the cause before relying on the event.
- When finished, end the broadcast in YouTube and stop sending content from the encoder in accordance with the current interface. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If the archive matters, review YouTube’s current archive settings and keep a local copy as a backup.
Rights still apply to prerecorded material
A prerecorded file is still live content when rebroadcast. You are responsible for having the necessary rights to use the video and its audio on Google services, including applicable music rights, and for complying with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. Use only material you are authorized to rebroadcast; the fact that a recording is already made does not grant permission. See YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.

Common problems and what to check
- You cannot start a live stream: check channel verification and whether a restriction occurred within the previous 90 days. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube receives no encoder feed: verify that the encoder is sending to the correct event, and that its stream URL and key match the values shown in YouTube Studio. Treat the key as private; replace it if it has been exposed.
- The preview does not appear: confirm that the encoder is running and sending a signal, then check YouTube Live Control Room and stream health before selecting Go live.
- The video is silent or motion is poor: test the actual file and audio path, then review the selected encoder settings and YouTube’s current format-specific recommendations. Do not assume that a file visible in a scene is also providing the intended audio.
- You cannot find local-file playback or looping controls: the official Desktop getting-started documentation cited above does not establish those controls. Check the controls in your installed version rather than applying Talk Studio instructions to Desktop.
- The stream ends or fails to archive as expected: stop the event through the current YouTube workflow and consult YouTube’s archive guidance. Its stated automatic archive condition is for streams under 12 hours; keeping a local archive provides a backup.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded recordings without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
